Rhinogobius maculafasciatus is a small, cool-water freshwater goby described by Chen and Shao in 1996 from East Asia, most likely the Yangtze River drainage of China. It is a true goby — family Oxudercidae — and like all true gobies it carries its pelvic fins fused into a distinctive cup-shaped sucker disc, the character that immediately separates the gobies from the outwardly similar sleepers and gudgeons. That the great majority of gobies are marine makes every genuinely freshwater member of the family interesting, and Rhinogobius maculafasciatus is no exception: a compact, stream-adapted micro-predator built for fast-flowing, oxygen-rich, cool rocky water, it is a resident cave-spawner whose male guards the eggs, making aquarium breeding achievable for the dedicated keeper.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhinogobius maculafasciatus was formally described by Chen and Shao in 1996, with the type locality believed to be in the Yangtze River drainage of China. The Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names in ichthyology — places the species in the genus Rhinogobius and the family Oxudercidae. No earlier combination under another genus has been identified; the genus Rhinogobius has been used since the original description.

Rhinogobius is a large and taxonomically active genus of East and Southeast Asian stream gobies encompassing species from China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan across into mainland Southeast Asia and the island chains to the south. Individual species are frequently described as new as molecular and morphological surveys work through museum collections and field material, and the boundaries between many nominal species remain incompletely resolved. Rhinogobius maculafasciatus is one of numerous recently described members of this group.

The name maculafasciatus is compound Latin: macula, a spot or blotch, and fasciatus, banded — the epithet refers to the species' distinctive spotted-and-banded patterning. Rhinogobius translates as 'snout goby', from the Greek rhinos (nose, snout) and the genus Gobius.

Morphology

Rhinogobius maculafasciatus is a small, robust-bodied goby, likely reaching 1–2.5 in in standard length at maturity, consistent with the size range typical of the genus. The body is somewhat cylindrical and dorsoventrally flattened anteriorly, reflecting the species' adaptation to life on the substrate in flowing water. The head is large and broad, with large eyes set well forward, and the mouth is terminal and moderate in size, suited to picking small invertebrates from the substrate and water column.

The most diagnostic external character shared by all true gobies is the fusion of the pelvic fins into a single cup-shaped sucker disc on the underside of the body. This disc — absent in the sleepers (Eleotridae) and gudgeons — allows the fish to anchor itself to rocks and gravel in current, and it is the quickest way to confirm that a stream goby belongs to the family Oxudercidae rather than to Eleotridae. The patterning described by the species name is a combination of spots and darker crossbands on a pale to yellowish-tan ground; sexually mature males typically show intensified colouration, particularly in the fins.

Sexual dimorphism is present: males are usually larger, show brighter and more contrasting colouration, and develop more extended median fins. Females are smaller, paler and noticeably fuller-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

Rhinogobius maculafasciatus occupies fast-flowing, well-oxygenated freshwater streams and rivers, the characteristic habitat of most members of its genus. Rocky substrates, gravel beds and boulders in clear upland or foothill streams are the typical setting — places where current keeps oxygen levels high and the water cool. The species is a cool-temperate fish, not a tropical one; water temperatures in its native range are most likely 54–72 °F, and the species requires considerably cooler conditions than the usual community aquarium.

Streams of the Yangtze drainage and adjacent river systems in China are the probable native range of this species, placing it in a biogeographic zone of monsoonal climate with warm summers and cold winters. Many Rhinogobius in this part of East Asia experience a distinct seasonal temperature cycle, and populations are adapted to these fluctuations. The species is freshwater throughout its range; the available literature does not indicate a requirement for brackish conditions, though Rhinogobius as a genus spans the spectrum from strictly freshwater to estuarine.

Water chemistry in suitable habitat is typically clear and moderately hard to hard, with a near-neutral pH (approximately 6.5–7.5), moderate current and a substrate of sand, gravel and stones offering both refuge and spawning sites.

Feeding

Rhinogobius maculafasciatus is a micro-predator, as are virtually all members of the genus. In the wild it hunts small benthic and water-column invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other minute prey — picking them from the substrate or intercepting drifting items in the current. It is not an algae grazer, and it is not a scavenger.

In the aquarium, the species performs best on a varied diet of small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, daphnia, cyclops, brine shrimp, grindal worms and similar prey. Like many small gobies, Rhinogobius maculafasciatus typically ignores dried flake foods or accepts them reluctantly and in small quantity, and a fish maintained exclusively on dry feeds tends to lose condition over time. Conditioning a pair for breeding requires regular offerings of live or frozen foods. Feeding is most active under normal lighting conditions; the species hunts primarily by sight.

Mating

Rhinogobius maculafasciatus is a resident cave-spawner, the reproductive strategy typical of the genus in freshwater. There is no amphidromous component to the life cycle — the species completes its entire breeding cycle in fresh water, which is the practical fact that makes aquarium breeding achievable and that distinguishes it from the many amphidromous gobies in other genera whose larvae must develop at sea.

Males in breeding condition become territorial and defend a cave, crevice or cavity among rocks or gravel. Courtship involves the male displaying intensified colouration and fin-spreading to attract a gravid female. A ripe female is recognisable by her fuller, more rounded abdomen and, often, by a more drab or yellowish body colouration compared with the male's vivid display pattern. The male leads the female into the spawning cavity to deposit the clutch. A seasonal cool period that mimics the species' natural temperature cycle may be helpful in conditioning adults for spawning.

Breeding

Spawning takes place inside the selected cave or crevice, where the female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the roof, wall or base of the cavity. The eggs are small and numerous, firmly adhered to the hard surface. Once spawning is complete the female's role ends; the male takes sole charge of the clutch, guarding the entrance to the cave against intruders and fanning the eggs continuously with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygenation and remove debris and fungus.

Incubation duration depends on temperature but is typical of small goby eggs — several days to around a week or so. The fry are small on hatching and require micro-foods such as infusoria, rotifers or commercially produced liquid fry food as a first diet, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp and microworm as they grow. Because the whole reproductive cycle occurs in fresh water, a well-set-up aquarium with suitable spawning sites and stable cool water can yield fry successfully. Providing multiple caves reduces male aggression and gives pairs the choice of cavity most to their preference.

In the aquarium

Rhinogobius maculafasciatus is a specialist fish rather than a community beginner, and its primary requirement — cool, well-oxygenated, flowing water — is the first thing to get right. Temperatures of 54–72 °F suit the species; keeping it at typical community-tank temperatures of 75–79 °F causes chronic stress and shortened lifespan. A chiller or a cool basement installation is often needed in warmer climates. Strong filtration and good surface movement, or a powerhead-driven current, are essential to replicate the well-oxygenated stream conditions the species needs.

A tank of 15 US gal or more is appropriate for a pair or small group. Furnish it with a sandy or fine-gravel substrate, smooth river stones, and flat rocks that form natural caves and crevices — these serve as territory markers and spawning sites and are not optional. Broken-line-of-sight cover reduces male-to-male aggression. The species is a known jumper and the tank must be kept tightly covered.

Rhinogobius maculafasciatus is best kept as a species tank or with fast-moving, cool-water companions of similar size that will not outcompete it at feeding time. It should not be kept with tropical fish, large predators or any fish nimble enough to monopolise food. Feed small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, daphnia, cyclops and brine shrimp — and expect indifference or outright refusal of dried flake. A seasonal cool period (dropping toward the lower end of the temperature range in winter) may encourage breeding. The species is not recommended for beginners, but for keepers of cool-water nano fish it is a rewarding and rarely seen gem.

Conservation

Rhinogobius maculafasciatus has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. The genus Rhinogobius contains numerous species of narrow distribution in East and Southeast Asian river drainages, and many individual species remain poorly known outside specialist ichthyological literature; formal conservation assessments lag behind the pace of taxonomic description.

The species is believed to occur in Chinese river drainages where habitat pressures include water extraction, agricultural run-off, dam construction and periodic flooding events associated with development in the Yangtze basin and adjacent systems. Stream-adapted gobies with restricted ranges are in principle vulnerable to any modification of water flow, temperature regime or substrate quality. However, without a formal assessment or population data, the actual conservation status of this species is unknown. The aquarium trade in Rhinogobius is modest compared with more commercially prominent genera, and there is no evidence of significant collection pressure on this species specifically.
