Rhinogobius szechuanensis, the Sichuan goby, is a small true goby (family Oxudercidae, subfamily Gobionellinae) endemic to the Minjiang River drainage in Sichuan Province, China. Like all true gobies it carries the pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc — the character that separates the Gobiidae and their kin from the unrelated sleeper gobies and gudgeons — yet, like a handful of its relatives, it has forsaken the marine environment that is home to the vast majority of gobies and colonised the cool, clear, fast-flowing freshwater streams of central China. A bottom-dwelling micro-predator that reaches roughly 4 in, it is a resident freshwater cave-spawner whose male guards the eggs, placing it among the Rhinogobius species that can in principle be bred in the aquarium. It has not been formally assessed by the IUCN and remains little known outside ichthyological circles and a small community of specialist goby keepers.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhinogobius szechuanensis was originally described by the Chinese ichthyologist Tchang in 1939 from specimens collected in Sichuan (then romanised as Szechuan) Province, giving the species its epithet. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid names — recognises the species under Rhinogobius, the large and speciose genus of Asian freshwater gobies that dominates the streams of East and Southeast Asia. Older literature placed the species in the now-synonym genera Ctenogobius and Sinogobius, and the FishBase record still shows cross-references to Ctenogobius szechuanensis; either name may appear in older papers, but Rhinogobius szechuanensis is the current valid combination.

Phylogenetic analysis of the complete mitochondrial genome, published in 2023, confirms R. szechuanensis within the order Gobiiformes and places it in the subfamily Gobionellinae of the family Oxudercidae — the same subfamily that includes many of the Asian river gobies. This is the first important point for the aquarist: R. szechuanensis is a true goby, not a sleeper or gudgeon. Its pelvic fins are fused into a sucker disc, a diagnostic character of real gobies that is lacking in the unrelated Eleotridae. Gobies as a whole are overwhelmingly marine; R. szechuanensis is one of the lineages that has become fully freshwater-resident and does not require saltwater at any stage of its life.

Morphology

Rhinogobius szechuanensis is a compact, benthic fish with a maximum recorded total length of 4 in, though most adults in the wild and in the aquarium are smaller. The body plan is typical of the genus: a blunt, broad head with large eyes set high and forward, a slightly tapering cylindrical body and a flattened ventral surface suited to clinging to the stream bed. The fused pelvic fins form the characteristic sucker disc that allows the fish to hold station on current-swept rocks and cobbles.

The genus Rhinogobius includes many visually similar species, and the separation of R. szechuanensis from close relatives in the Minjiang drainage requires examination of scale counts, fin-ray counts and coloration. Males of the genus typically show brighter facial markings — red or orange barring on the cheeks and lips and spotted or barred fins — and become more intensely coloured during courtship; females are plainer and more cryptic. Specific coloration data for R. szechuanensis in life are not well documented in the accessible literature, and the published material focuses primarily on meristics and molecular data.

Habitat

Rhinogobius szechuanensis is endemic to the Minjiang River drainage in Sichuan Province, central China. The Minjiang is a major tributary of the upper Yangtze, rising in the Tibetan Plateau foothills and descending through a warm-temperate to subtropical climate zone. Mitochondrial genome studies confirm this drainage as the species' native range, and no wild records outside the Minjiang system have been published.

Within this drainage the species inhabits flowing freshwater streams and rivers, living among rocks, cobbles and pebbles on the benthos — the lifestyle typical of the genus. These are well-oxygenated, fast to moderate-flow waters rather than sluggish backwaters. FishBase categorises R. szechuanensis as subtropical, and general Rhinogobius ecology places Sichuan-endemic species in temperate to warm-temperate conditions with marked seasonal temperature variation. This is emphatically not a tropical fish, and attempting to keep it at the high temperatures appropriate for a general tropical community aquarium would be a mismatch with its natural range.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Rhinogobius szechuanensis a trophic level of 3.5, placing it squarely among the mid-level predators — a micro-predator that hunts small invertebrates on and near the stream bed. In the wild it takes aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other benthic invertebrates from among the rocks and gravel it inhabits.

In the aquarium, as with Rhinogobius generally, the species is best fed on small live and frozen foods: bloodworm (chironomid larvae), brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and similar copepods, and small aquatic invertebrates. Rhinogobius gobies as a group are notorious for refusing dry flake food or accepting it only grudgingly, and keepers of congeneric species report that fish kept exclusively on flake lose condition over time. Varied live and frozen feeding is therefore not optional but a genuine care requirement — a point to communicate clearly to prospective keepers.

Mating

Rhinogobius szechuanensis is a resident freshwater cave-spawner, a breeding strategy shared by most members of the genus. Males establish and defend territories centred on a sheltered cavity — a gap under a rock, a crevice between cobbles or a suitable hollow on the stream bed — and court ripe females from that position. Courtship displays involve fin extension and intensified colouration; the male leads a receptive female into his cave to spawn.

Studies on the breeding ecology of amphidromous and non-amphidromous Rhinogobius confirm that the male is the territory-holding, site-defending sex. Within the genus, resident non-amphidromous species (which include the Sichuan goby and many other Chinese endemics) complete their entire life cycle in fresh water, which distinguishes them from the amphidromous Rhinogobius species whose larvae must develop at sea. The whole-freshwater strategy of R. szechuanensis means that, in principle, the species can breed in an aquarium — unlike the amphidromous gobies elsewhere in this family.

Breeding

Rhinogobius szechuanensis is a cave or substrate spawner in the manner of its genus: the female deposits adhesive eggs on the ceiling or wall of the chosen cave, and from that point the male takes sole charge, guarding and fanning the clutch with his pectoral fins until the eggs hatch. Breeding data from congeneric species (including R. zhoui, documented on Seriously Fish) indicate clutch sizes of up to approximately 70 eggs per spawning, with eggs around 0.5 in in diameter and an incubation period of 10–14 days at typical spawning temperatures, though this is temperature-dependent and may extend to 21 days in cooler water.

For keepers attempting to breed the species, the essential requirements are high water quality, well-oxygenated and moderately cool water, and caves or crevices of appropriate dimensions. Conditioning the pair on live and frozen foods before attempting to spawn them is important. Because the male provides genuine parental care — actively guarding and ventilating the eggs — the risk of predation from the male himself is low, though separating the spawning cave to a rearing vessel once the female has finished laying is a common precaution taken with Rhinogobius to maximise fry survival. The species has not been bred extensively in the hobby outside specialist circles, and detailed first-hand accounts specific to R. szechuanensis are sparse.

In the aquarium

Rhinogobius szechuanensis is a specialist's fish suited to a temperature-appropriate stream biotope rather than a general tropical community tank. Because the Minjiang drainage is warm-temperate, the species wants cooler water than most tropical aquarium fish — general guidance for Rhinogobius native to Chinese hill-streams suggests a range of roughly 50–77 °F, with some tolerance below that; attempting to keep this species at 79–82 °F as one would a cichlid or gourami is likely to shorten its life. A cool-water or seasonal-variation setup with good flow and high oxygenation is appropriate.

The aquarium should replicate the rocky stream-bed habitat: a substrate of smooth cobbles, gravel and sand, with flat stones and pieces of slate arranged to create caves and crevices — both for shelter and as spawning sites. The fish is a confirmed jumper, and a tight-fitting cover is mandatory. Males are territorial toward other males of the species and toward similar bottom-dwelling gobies; give each male sufficient cave space and line-of-sight breaks to reduce aggression. Tankmates should be chosen from small, non-competitive species that inhabit the mid-water rather than the bottom.

Feeding must prioritise live and frozen foods; dry food is likely to be ignored or accepted poorly. This is not a fish for the keeper who wants the convenience of flake feeding. Water quality should be maintained at a high standard, as Rhinogobius in general are sensitive to elevated nitrate and degraded oxygen levels — a reflection of the fast, clean streams they inhabit in the wild.

Conservation

Rhinogobius szechuanensis has not been assessed by the IUCN and carries no formal conservation status. FishBase and the published mitochondrial genome literature confirm it as a Minjiang River drainage endemic, which in principle makes it vulnerable to any degradation of that system — dam construction, water abstraction, pollution and sedimentation are ongoing pressures throughout the upper Yangtze basin, including the Minjiang. The Three Gorges and related hydropower developments have substantially altered flow regimes and sediment dynamics in the greater Yangtze system, with knock-on effects on tributary habitats.

The species appears to have a restricted natural range, and its dependence on clear, flowing, well-oxygenated stream habitat makes it potentially sensitive to the siltation and flow reduction that accompany agricultural land-use change. There is no evidence of a significant aquarium trade in this species; most Rhinogobius offered commercially are the more familiar Japanese and Taiwanese species (R. duospilus, R. brunneus, R. zhoui). Formal survey and IUCN assessment of R. szechuanensis and related Minjiang endemics would be valuable given the hydrology of the catchment.
