Pangio incognito is one of the smallest and most obscure members of the kuhli-loach genus Pangio — a tiny, eel-like cobitid from a narrow range in southern Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, where it lives in warm, soft, shaded forest streams over fine sand. At no more than 1 in standard length, it is among the smallest fish kept in the freshwater hobby, and it was unknown to science until 1993, when Maurice Kottelat and K. K. P. Lim described it from specimens collected the year before near Kuching. Its Near Threatened status on the IUCN Red List reflects how little is known of it: the entire documented range comes from that single original collection, and the forested streams it depends on are under sustained pressure from deforestation and land-use change across Sarawak.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangio incognito was described in 1993 by Maurice Kottelat and K. K. P. Lim in a landmark review of the eel-loaches of the Malay Peninsula and adjacent Borneo, a paper that reorganised the genus and described several new species simultaneously. The name incognito — Latin for 'unknown' or 'hidden' — was chosen deliberately: the species had gone unrecognised even as the genus was being studied, coming to light only when specimens were examined radiographically during the broader review. Kottelat & Lim placed it in the kuhlii-oblonga species group within Pangio.

The genus Pangio itself carries a long synonymy. Through much of the twentieth century the kuhli loaches were known under the genus Acanthophthalmus, and older aquarium literature still uses that name. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Pangio as the valid genus for all these eel-loaches, and Pangio incognito has not been subsequently moved or synonymised. The family is Cobitidae, the true loaches, within the broader superfamily Cobitoidea.

Morphology

Like all Pangio, P. incognito is slender and eel-like — elongated, cylindrical and flexible, tapering gently toward the tail. At a maximum recorded standard length of 1 in it is exceptionally small, placing it among the tiniest loaches in the genus and in the hobby as a whole. The body is effectively scaleless to the touch: scales are tiny and deeply embedded, giving the skin a smooth, almost naked feel and making the fish highly permeable to waterborne chemicals.

The head is small and pointed, the eyes reduced. Like other cobitids, Pangio carries a bifid suborbital spine in a groove beneath the eye — a mobile, erectile spine that can be flicked out defensively and will snag a net. The colour pattern of P. incognito in life is not elaborately documented in available sources, but Pangio of the kuhlii-oblonga group typically show narrow dark banding or striping on a pale or yellowish ground; keepers should confirm markings against the original description or a verified specimen photograph before purchase.

Habitat

Pangio incognito is known only from a small area west of Kuching in southern Sarawak, on the western coast of Borneo (Malaysian Borneo). The type series was collected in 1992 from freshwater localities in this region, and no subsequent records from other drainage systems have been published. This restricted, apparently endemic range is the primary reason for its Near Threatened assessment.

Sarawak's lowland streams in this area flow through tropical peat-swamp and mixed-dipterocarp forest over fine alluvial sediment. The water is typically warm (around 73–81 °F), very soft, with low pH driven by organic acids leaching from leaf litter and woody debris — the classic blackwater forest-stream environment of Sundaland. Flow is gentle. Pangio incognito is demersal and burrowing, living in and just above the soft sandy bottom in shaded, sheltered stretches of these streams.

Feeding

Pangio incognito is a micro-omnivore and substrate-sifter. With a trophic level of 3.2 (from FishBase), it feeds on small invertebrates, worms, insect larvae, organic detritus and fine particulate matter gleaned from and within the sand and leaf litter of the stream bed. In the wild this foraging happens largely at night, when eel-loaches are most active.

In the aquarium, P. incognito must be offered sinking foods small enough for a 1 in fish — very fine sinking pellets or micro-pellets, gel foods, small portions of live or frozen bloodworm, micro-worms and similar. Because it feeds after dark, a nightly feed after lights-out is the most reliable way to ensure it receives enough. It is easily outcompeted by larger or bolder tank-mates, so care must be taken that food actually reaches the substrate level where this species forages.

Mating

Virtually nothing is documented about the reproductive biology of Pangio incognito in the wild. What is known comes from parallels with better-studied members of the genus: kuhli loaches generally show modest sexual dimorphism at best, with females sometimes appearing slightly deeper-bodied when gravid and the subdermal ovaries of ripe females occasionally faintly visible through the body wall. Males in the genus have been reported to develop slightly roughened or modified pectoral fins in breeding condition, but these cues are subtle and of limited practical use.

By analogy with other Pangio species, spawning in P. incognito is presumed to be associated with the seasonal monsoon cycle, when rising water levels, slightly cooler temperatures from rainfall and increased flow through Sarawak's lowland streams may stimulate reproductive behaviour. No specific observations from either wild or captive populations have been recorded in the literature.

Breeding

Pangio incognito is not bred in the home aquarium in any documented, repeatable way. As with the broader kuhli-loach group, reproduction is an egg-scattering strategy with no parental care: ripe fish are believed to scatter small, greenish, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved floating plants or surface vegetation, after which neither parent takes any further role. The trade in kuhli loaches generally is largely wild-collected rather than farmed, and P. incognito — being a highly localised, little-known species — is rarely if ever seen in commerce at all.

Keepers who wish to attempt breeding any Pangio species should provide a species-only tank, very soft acidic water, dense floating plants such as water sprite or fine-leaved moss near the surface, and a conditioning diet of live or frozen invertebrates. Reports of kuhli-loach spawnings in the hobby are sparse, and success is the exception. For P. incognito specifically, the honest position is that the breeding biology is essentially undocumented and captive reproduction has not been achieved in any published account.

In the aquarium

Pangio incognito is essentially a species for specialists: it is tiny (1 in), rarely available, poorly documented, and demands conditions that its size and habitat make non-negotiable. The substrate must be fine, smooth sand — this is a burrowing species that dives into the sediment to hide and rest, and sharp gravel or coarse substrate will abrade and damage its scaleless skin. A tightly fitted lid is essential; eel-loaches are notorious escape artists and P. incognito, being exceptionally small, can exit through any gap.

Because it is scaleless, P. incognito is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many treatments. If disease strikes, half-doses and copper-free products are advisable, with careful monitoring. Tank-mates must be chosen with care: the fish is peaceful but can be lost at feeding time among larger or more assertive species, and is so small that even moderately sized peaceful fish may occasionally attempt to eat it. A species-specific setup or a very small nano aquarium with similar-sized microfish is the safest approach. Water should be warm (73–81 °F), very soft and slightly acidic, with gentle filtration, shaded lighting, and some leaf litter or wood to recreate the sheltered, dimly lit stream habitat this fish knows from Sarawak. Keep in a small group — like all Pangio, it is more confident and active with conspecifics present.

This is a fish to keep for the experience of observing something genuinely rare and little-known. It is also a facultative air-breather, able to supplement gill respiration with gulps of surface air — a useful adaptation in its sometimes oxygen-depleted peat-forest streams, and one that makes it forgiving of momentary oxygen dips provided the tank is otherwise well-maintained and covered.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pangio incognito as Near Threatened (NT) in December 2019, under criterion B1b(iii) — meaning its extent of occurrence is estimated to be small and there is a projected or inferred decline in the area, extent or quality of its habitat. The assessment reflects the species' extremely restricted known distribution: it is documented only from the type-series collection made in 1992 west of Kuching in southern Sarawak, and no subsequent records have extended its known range.

The primary threat is habitat loss. Southern Sarawak's lowland forest streams are under sustained pressure from agriculture — particularly oil-palm expansion — logging and peat-swamp drainage, all of which alter water chemistry, increase sedimentation and destroy the shaded, structurally complex stream environment that P. incognito requires. Because the species is so small and so rarely encountered, it may be locally more widespread than the single collection suggests, but the absence of additional records keeps its conservation status precarious. It is not known to be present in any protected area within its range. The aquarium trade is unlikely to be a meaningful pressure given how rarely this species enters commerce, but wild collection should be treated with caution given the narrow known distribution.
