Taxonomy & naming
Pangio mariarum was originally described as Acanthophthalmus mariarum by Robert Frederick Inger and Phui-Kong Chin in their 1962 revision of Borneo's freshwater fishes, the type locality being northern Borneo. The genus Acanthophthalmus — a name reflecting the suborbital spine that all kuhli-type loaches bear — was synonymised with Cobitis by Kottelat (1987), who subsequently established Pangio as the correct genus name when it was found to predate the simultaneous synonym Apua. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) now lists the species as Pangio mariarum (Inger & Chin, 1962), and the parenthetical authority signals the change of genus from the original combination.
Within Pangio, mariarum belongs to a group of larger, more slender Bornean species that also includes Pangio filinaris; it can be distinguished from that species by its higher vertebral count (49–51 vs. 45–49) and by having six pelvic-fin rays rather than five, with males additionally exhibiting a characteristically curved pectoral fin. The species has no recognised subspecies or trade varieties. Because it has apparently never been exported commercially, it is unknown under any widely used common name.
Morphology
Pangio mariarum is a typical kuhli loach in body plan: extremely elongate and laterally compressed, with a blunt snout, small downward-pointing mouth furnished with three pairs of barbels, and a body that tapers smoothly to a rounded tail. At up to 2.5 in total length it is near the upper end of the genus, and its relatively larger size and slightly more robust proportions compared to Pangio filinaris are among the features separating the two species. The pectoral fins of breeding males are curved, a subtle dimorphic feature noted in the original description.
The skin is near-scaleless — the deeply embedded scales are so small as to leave the body effectively naked to the touch, which is relevant for medication sensitivity. Below each eye lies the erectile suborbital spine characteristic of cobitid loaches, which the fish can erect defensively; these spines can snag nets and nick skin. Coloration in the genus Pangio varies but kuhli-group species typically show a yellowish or pinkish-tan ground colour with darker banding or mottling, though detailed in-life colour notes for mariarum are sparse in the literature.
Habitat
Pangio mariarum is endemic to northern Borneo, and its known range reflects the island's forest-stream habitats in that region. The genus Pangio as a whole favours slow-moving to still, shaded freshwater habitats: forest streams, peat-swamp margins, and lowland drainage channels where the water is warm, soft and often markedly acidic. Substrates are typically fine sand or leaf litter, and submerged vegetation and decomposing organic matter provide both shelter and foraging ground. The canopy shading keeps light levels low and temperatures stable.
Parameters characteristic of kuhli-loach habitat across Borneo and the Malay Peninsula include temperatures in the range of 75–86 °F and a pH of 5.5–6.5, sometimes as low as the mid-fives in peat-influenced water, with hardness generally very low. Whether mariarum specifically favours peat-swamp or clearer hill-forest streams is not well documented, but the broader genus preference is for warm, tannin-stained, acidic water with a soft, fine substrate and abundant organic cover.
Feeding
Like other kuhli loaches, Pangio mariarum is a micro-omnivore and benthic sifter. In the wild it forages primarily at night, working through leaf litter and fine substrate with its sensitive barbels to locate small invertebrates — worm-like organisms, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other meiobenthic prey — as well as incidental organic detritus. The downward-pointing mouth and elongate body are both adaptations to this burrowing, substrate-rooting lifestyle.
In any aquarium setting, providing sinking foods appropriate to its small size is essential. Sinking micro-pellets, finely chopped frozen bloodworm, Daphnia and similar live or frozen invertebrate foods are suitable. Because the species is nocturnal, feeding after lights-out improves the odds that individuals actually receive food before bolder or faster tankmates consume it — a kuhli loach that only sees food during the day is frequently underfed.
Mating
Virtually nothing is documented about the reproductive biology of Pangio mariarum specifically, and the species is so rarely encountered in captivity that no aquarium observations are on record. What is known is inferred from the genus and family: kuhli loaches as a group show limited, hard-to-read sexual dimorphism. Males of mariarum are noted to have curved pectoral fins — a feature recorded in the original description — but distinguishing the sexes in a home aquarium, where fish are rarely in prime condition, would be extremely difficult.
In related kuhli-group species, conditioning is thought to be linked to rainfall and the onset of seasonal flooding, which alters water temperature, chemistry and level. These are the cues that trigger ripening in wild populations. Recreating such seasonal shifts in a home tank is challenging, and the window for pairing conditioned fish is consequently narrow.
Breeding
Pangio mariarum is very rarely if ever bred in the aquarium. Kuhli loaches as a group are egg-scatterers with no parental care: ripe fish reportedly release small, greenish, adhesive eggs among floating plant roots or fine-leaved vegetation at the water surface, where they adhere in small clusters. Adults take no further interest in the eggs or larvae. No targeted spawning attempts involving mariarum appear in the literature, and given the species' near-total absence from the hobby, this is unsurprising.
For kuhli loaches in general, the few reported aquarium spawnings have occurred by accident in well-established, well-planted tanks where a group was kept together over a long period. A soft, acidic, tannin-stained water environment, a varied live-food diet to bring fish into condition, and the presence of floating plants such as Riccia or Java moss near the surface are the conditions most often associated with these rare events. Parental care is absent; eggs and fry must be protected from tankmates if any are to be raised.
In the aquarium
Pangio mariarum is effectively unknown in the aquarium trade. Seriously Fish notes that the species has probably never been exported commercially, and it is not available through mainstream ornamental fish channels. Any keeper who did obtain it should house it in conditions appropriate to the kuhli loach group: a tank with a fine soft sand substrate — sharp gravel will damage the belly and the delicate barbels over time — gentle filtration, subdued lighting, and ample cover from leaf litter, driftwood tangles and dense planting. The tank should be kept warm, at 75–86 °F, with soft, acidic water in the pH 5.5–6.5 range.
Kuhli loaches are social, and Pangio species generally fare better and behave more naturally in the company of their own kind than when kept singly. A group of five or more is a sensible starting point. The near-scaleless skin means that, like all Pangio, mariarum would be highly sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many treatments — if disease treatment is necessary, the lowest effective dose should be used and the fish monitored closely. Being nocturnal and prone to burrowing completely out of sight, this fish is easily overlooked and easily underfed; sinking food offered at lights-out is the practical solution.
Conservation
Pangio mariarum is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2019). The species is endemic to northern Borneo and is not known to be subject to any significant exploitation pressure — it has, as far as can be determined, never entered the ornamental fish trade in meaningful numbers. FishBase records it as having high resilience and low vulnerability to fishing.
The broader conservation concern for Bornean freshwater endemics of this kind is habitat loss: the lowland and peat-swamp forests of Borneo have been heavily cleared and drained over the past several decades for palm oil and timber, reducing and fragmenting the forest-stream habitats that species such as Pangio mariarum depend on. While the species currently holds an LC assessment, the long-term trajectory of its forest-stream habitat across northern Borneo remains a concern worth monitoring.
