Taxonomy & naming
Protomyzon borneensis was described by Sunder Lal Hora and K. C. Jayaram in 1952, and the name has remained stable since — no old genus combinations are recorded, and Protomyzon is treated as a monotypic genus containing this species alone. The genus was placed in the family Balitoridae, the hillstream or torrent loaches, a group of rheophilic cypriniform fishes found across South and Southeast Asia.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid combination Protomyzon borneensis Hora & Jayaram, 1952. Within Balitoridae the genus belongs to the broad assemblage of Bornean hillstream loaches that also includes Gastromyzon, Neogastromyzon and related genera; its exact phylogenetic position within the family has not been thoroughly revised in the published literature available to the hobby. The species is effectively unknown in the aquarium trade and is absent from most English-language loach resources.
Morphology
Protomyzon borneensis shares the body plan common to all Balitoridae: it is strongly depressed (flattened top-to-bottom), with a broad, flat underside formed into a functional adhesive surface that the fish uses to cling to rocks in torrential current. The head is wide and somewhat spatulate, the eyes are set high, and the mouth is positioned ventrally with fleshy lips suited to rasping biofilm from hard substrates.
The skin is effectively near-scaleless, or bears very small, deeply embedded scales — a characteristic it shares with most hillstream loaches and one that carries important implications for medication sensitivity. No erectile suborbital spine has been described for Protomyzon, unlike the botiid and cobitid loaches. Precise maximum size data are not available in the sources consulted; like most Bornean hillstream loaches of similar genera it is presumed to be a small fish, likely in the range of 2–3 in standard length, but this figure should be treated as an inference from family context rather than a confirmed measurement.
Habitat
This species is endemic to Borneo, restricted to the island's fast-flowing hill streams — clear, well-oxygenated, rocky torrents running over boulders, cobbles and gravel at relatively cool temperatures for an equatorial island. The water in these upland channels is typically low in dissolved solids, slightly acidic to neutral, and very well aerated by the turbulent flow. Dissolved oxygen is high and the current is strong enough to keep fine sediment in suspension, leaving the rock surfaces clean and colonised by a rich growth of algae, diatoms and microbial biofilm.
Protomyzon borneensis is rheophilic in the strict sense — it is adapted exclusively for life in current and cannot tolerate the still, warm, oxygen-depleted conditions of lowland waters or the average community aquarium. Its distribution within Borneo is not precisely documented in the sources available; it should be regarded as a stream endemic with a potentially restricted range.
Feeding
Protomyzon borneensis is an obligate aufwuchs and biofilm grazer: it rasps algae, diatoms, detritus and the associated microfauna from the surface of rocks using its ventrally directed, fleshy mouth. In its native torrents the biofilm layer on boulders and cobbles is the primary food source, supplemented by small invertebrates and organic particles carried in the current.
In an aquarium this feeding mode makes the species demanding to maintain. It requires a mature, established tank in which rock surfaces are colonised by visible algae and diatoms — a newly set-up or spotlessly clean tank offers nothing for it to graze, and it will starve within weeks. Supplementary feeding with blanched greens (courgette, spinach, cucumber), algae wafers, and small frozen foods (Daphnia, copepods, micro-worms) can help sustain it, but the underlying biofilm community is not optional. This is not a generic algae-eater or a fish that can be kept on flake food; it is a highly specialised grazer.
Mating
No published account of mating behaviour in Protomyzon borneensis or in the genus Protomyzon is available in the literature accessible to the hobby. From the biology of closely related Bornean hillstream loaches, mating is presumed to involve male–female pairing over rocky substrate in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated conditions. In genera such as Gastromyzon, sexual dimorphism is reported to be subtle, with mature females becoming noticeably broader-bodied when in breeding condition; a similar pattern is plausible for Protomyzon but unconfirmed.
Most hillstream loaches in aquarium conditions do not spawn unless the environment closely replicates their native torrent: strong, laminar flow, cool and highly oxygenated water, mature biofilm-covered stone substrate, and seasonal variation in temperature or water level that may act as a spawning trigger. None of these conditions are documented specifically for this species.
Breeding
Protomyzon borneensis is not known to have been bred in captivity. No spawning account for this species or genus has been located in the available literature, and the species is effectively absent from the aquarium trade, meaning the pool of potential breeders is essentially non-existent.
On the basis of family biology, it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer: eggs would be deposited among or under stones in fast current, receiving no parental care, and developing in the spaces between substrate particles where oxygenated water circulates. This pattern is consistent with other Balitoridae for which breeding data exist, notably Sewellia lineolata, which has spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river-style tanks — but that success is exceptional even within the family, and cannot be assumed for a genus as poorly studied as Protomyzon. Keepers should not acquire this fish with any expectation of breeding it.
In the aquarium
Protomyzon borneensis is an advanced-keeper species suited only to a dedicated hillstream or torrent biotope aquarium. The setup priorities, in order of importance, are: strong, directional flow delivered by a powerhead or wavemaker across flat rock surfaces; high dissolved oxygen maintained by surface agitation and good gas exchange; cool water temperatures in the range appropriate for upland Bornean streams (the genus Gastromyzon, from the same island and habitat, is typically kept at 68–75 °F, and a similar range is the best available inference for Protomyzon); and a mature, established tank with extensive biofilm and algae coverage on rocks and glass.
Because the skin is near-scaleless, this species absorbs copper-based and many other medications far more readily than scaled fish. Any medication must be used at a reduced dose, and copper-containing treatments should be avoided entirely. The fish should be observed closely for signs of stress — laboured breathing, loss of grip on surfaces, or refusal of supplementary food — as all are early indicators that oxygen levels or flow are inadequate. Tank companions, if any, should be other rheophilic species with identical water requirements; tropical community fish with warm-water needs are incompatible. The species is rare enough in the hobby that detailed stocking data are not available.
Conservation
Protomyzon borneensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status. As a narrow-range Borneo stream endemic, it shares the vulnerability profile common to many Sundaland hillstream fishes: dependence on clear, fast, high-oxygen upland streams that are susceptible to deforestation-driven siltation, agricultural runoff, and channel alteration. Borneo's watersheds have experienced significant land-use change, including large-scale oil palm expansion and logging, which increases turbidity and fine sediment load in hill streams — conditions directly hostile to sessile biofilm grazers.
No trade pressure data are available; the species is essentially unknown in the ornamental fish trade, so collection for aquaria is not a documented concern. Its restricted distribution, specialised habitat requirements, and the ongoing degradation of upland Bornean watersheds suggest that a precautionary assessment — likely Data Deficient or Vulnerable — would be reasonable, but no formal evaluation has been conducted.
