Protomyzon whiteheadi is a small, compressed hillstream loach from the fast-flowing highland streams of northern Borneo, known from its type locality in the Belalong-Temburong basin of Brunei. At around 2 in standard length it is a specialist of clean, cool, oxygen-rich torrent water, clinging to rock and rubble with a sucker-like ventral surface while grazing biofilm and algae — a lifestyle that makes it demanding in the aquarium and essentially impossible to replace with a generic tropical setup. It is rarely encountered in the hobby and has never been bred in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Protomyzon whiteheadi was originally described by Léon Vaillant in 1893–1894, and for most of its taxonomic history it circulated under the junior combination Homaloptera whiteheadi — the old catch-all genus Homaloptera absorbed a great many Bornean hillstream loaches before the group was reorganised. The current valid genus Protomyzon is retained by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the governing authority for valid fish names, and FishBase lists the species under family Gastromyzontidae, which some authorities treat as a subfamily of the broader Balitoridae. The parenthetical around Vaillant's name signals that the species was originally placed in a different genus.

Protomyzon is a small Bornean-endemic genus; the epithet whiteheadi honours the naturalist John Whitehead, who collected extensively in Borneo and the Philippines in the late nineteenth century and whose field work yielded numerous holotypes for Vaillant and other European systematists. The species has no established vernacular name in the English-speaking hobby.

Morphology

Like other gastromyzontid hillstream loaches, Protomyzon whiteheadi is strongly dorsoventrally flattened — a body plan evolved not for open-water swimming but for pressing tight against rock in high-velocity currents. The paired fins are held horizontally and, together with a broad, fleshy ventral surface, form an adhesive structure that keeps the fish anchored to substrate even in white-water conditions. The overall profile is streamlined from above; the head is broad and depressed.

Adult size is approximately 2 in standard length, making this a small species. The skin is largely scaleless or with very reduced, embedded scales — a characteristic shared across the hillstream loach families that creates real sensitivity to medications and dissolved metals. There is no erectile suborbital spine of the botiid type; Gastromyzontidae lack that structure. Colouration is typically cryptic, patterned in browns and creams that blend with the streambottom rock and sand.

Habitat

The type locality of Protomyzon whiteheadi is the Belalong-Temburong basin, upstream of Kuala Belalong, Brunei — fast-flowing highland streams in northern Borneo. These are cool, highly oxygenated, clear-water torrents running over bedrock, boulders and coarse gravel, typically at higher elevation than the sluggish lowland rivers of Sundaland. The water is neutral to slightly alkaline (pH around 7.0–8.0), of moderate hardness, and cool relative to the lowland tropics.

This is emphatically not a warm, still-water fish. The streams it inhabits turn over their volume rapidly, deliver a constant supply of dissolved oxygen, and keep temperatures measurably cooler than lowland rivers — conditions that cannot be mimicked by a standard tropical community tank. The substrate is bare rock and coarse gravel; there is little organic sediment, and the fish's food is the thin film of algae, diatoms and biofilm that coats every wet surface in the current.

Feeding

Protomyzon whiteheadi is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In its native streams it rasps algae, diatoms and fine organic matter directly from rock surfaces, spending most of its active time stationary against a stone while its rasping mouthparts work the surface. In the aquarium this feeding mode means the fish needs a mature rockscape densely colonised with biofilm — a bare or newly set-up tank offers nothing to eat and the fish slowly starves, which is the single most common cause of death in captive hillstream loaches.

In a well-established tank with adequate algae growth, the diet can be supplemented with small frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, and with blanched greens (courgette, spinach) or specialist algae wafers placed where current keeps them against a rock surface. Prepared sinking foods are accepted but should not be relied upon as the sole food source; the core diet must remain living biofilm. The fish cannot compete with fast or aggressive tankmates for open-bottom food.

Mating

Very little is known about the reproductive biology of Protomyzon whiteheadi specifically. In hillstream loaches generally, sexing is difficult — females are often plumper when in reproductive condition, and some species show minor tubercle development on the snout or pectoral fin rays in males, but external dimorphism is subtle and often absent outside the breeding season.

Spawning in the wild is presumably tied to seasonal stream conditions — temperature fluctuations, altered flow, and changing food availability associated with dry- and wet-season patterns in Borneo's highland drainages. None of these cues are straightforwardly reproducible in a home aquarium, and the species has not been documented as reproductively active in captivity.

Breeding

Protomyzon whiteheadi has not been bred in home aquaria. The honest picture for nearly all hillstream loaches is that captive breeding is rarely achieved outside a small number of well-documented genera; for most species, and certainly for this one, breeding should not be expected.

In the wider Gastromyzontidae, a few genera — notably Sewellia in Vietnam — do spawn with some regularity in mature, high-flow river-tank setups, depositing eggs among stones and gravel with no parental care. Whether Protomyzon could eventually be coaxed to spawn under similar conditions is unknown; there is no published account of it. The breeding mode, if analogous to related genera, would be egg-scattering over substrate with no subsequent parental involvement. Until a verified spawning is documented, this species should be treated as not bred in captivity.

In the aquarium

Protomyzon whiteheadi is an uncommon species in the hobby and a challenging one to keep well. The fundamental requirement is a tank that accurately mimics a highland torrent: strong, turbulent water flow (a turnover rate of 15–20 times the tank volume per hour is a commonly cited minimum for hillstream specialists), high dissolved oxygen, cool temperatures in the 70–79 °F range, and a stable, mature substrate of smooth rocks and boulders fully coated in biofilm. Without that biofilm the fish cannot feed adequately.

Water quality must be excellent — high nitrates or phosphates suppress biofilm growth and harm the fish directly; frequent partial water changes are essential. The tank should not be run at temperatures normal for a tropical community; this is a cool-stream species and prolonged exposure to 82–86 °F is stressful. Because the skin is effectively scaleless, the fish is sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments; if disease treatment is needed, half-doses and careful choice of product are required. Tankmates should be peaceful and non-competitive over food — fast, boisterous fish will stress or out-compete it. Hillstream loaches generally do well in groups of their own kind where territory is less an issue than in isolation.

This species is rarely exported and is not a beginner's fish. Its care requirements are specific, its sensitivity to poor conditions is high, and it will not thrive in a generic community tank. It rewards a dedicated hillstream setup that is run with consistency and patience.

Conservation

Protomyzon whiteheadi is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (taxon ID 91174243). Its known range centres on the Belalong-Temburong basin in Brunei, a relatively well-protected area of highland forest — the Ulu Temburong National Park covers much of the catchment and limits the direct anthropogenic pressure on the streams there.

Nonetheless, its restricted range makes the species inherently vulnerable to catchment-level events. Borneo's broader freshwater systems are under sustained pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and hydroelectric development, and highland-stream endemics with small geographic ranges are generally at higher conservation risk than their LC designations might suggest. Any aquarium trade demand for this species would rely on wild collection; it is not farmed, and its rarity in trade likely reflects genuine difficulty of export rather than lack of interest.
