Protomyzon griswoldi is a small hillstream loach from the fast-flowing, rock-strewn streams of northern Borneo — one of the smallest members of its balitorid family on that island. It belongs to a rheophilic lineage that has evolved a flattened body and powerful pectoral and pelvic fins into a sucker-like platform for clinging to stones in torrential current, grazing the biofilm and algal film that coats submerged rock. Like every hillstream loach, it is not a general community fish: it demands cool, surging, highly oxygenated water over a mature, algae-covered rockscape, and it declines quickly in the warm, still, bare tanks it is too often placed in. Data on this species are sparse — it seldom appears in the aquarium trade and has attracted little dedicated study — but what is known places it firmly in the challenging and rewarding niche of the Bornean torrent specialists.

Taxonomy & naming

Protomyzon griswoldi was described in 1952 by Sunder Lal Hora and K. C. Jayaram, hence the parenthetical authority (Hora & Jayaram, 1952). It belongs to the family Balitoridae — the hillstream or torrent loaches — and to the genus Protomyzon, which encompasses a small cluster of dorsoventrally flattened balitorids native to streams in northern Borneo. The genus name means approximately 'first sucking-fish', referencing the sucker-like stance these fish take on submerged rock; the species epithet honours John Augustus 'Gus' Griswold Jr (1912–1991), an American ichthyologist and ornithologist who participated in Bornean expeditions and whose name was recorded in FishBase's biographical notes.

The family Balitoridae has been revised repeatedly, and the broader subfamily and tribal arrangement of Protomyzon within it may appear differently across older literature. FishBase and GBIF both list Protomyzon griswoldi as a valid name under its current combination. No synonyms have been published for this species. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for nomenclature, and the name used here reflects its current usage.

Morphology

Like its relatives, Protomyzon griswoldi is a small, strikingly flattened fish. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2.5 in SL for unsexed specimens, making it one of the smaller hillstream loaches in Bornean waters. The body is depressed — almost ray-like in profile when viewed from above — with broad, horizontal pectoral and pelvic fins that hug the substrate and help the fish resist powerful current without active muscular effort. The underside is flat; the dorsal surface is patterned in the cryptic browns and tans typical of rock-dwelling balitorids, providing camouflage against the gravel and stone of stream beds.

The skin is effectively near-scaleless (scales are small and deeply embedded), which makes Protomyzon griswoldi — like all balitorids — sensitive to medications, particularly copper-based treatments. This detail is critical for keepers. The head is small and slightly pointed; the mouth is positioned ventrally and is adapted for rasping biofilm from hard surfaces rather than taking particulate food from the water column.

Habitat

Protomyzon griswoldi is native to the freshwater hill streams of northern Borneo (present-day Sabah and Sarawak, Malaysia, and possibly adjacent Indonesian Kalimantan). Its habitat is fast-flowing, clear, cool-to-warm rheithral water over pebble, cobble and rock substrates — the kind of torrent environment where water is constantly broken and aerated, dissolved oxygen remains high, and the current is strong enough to dislodge fish that are not anchored by specialised morphology.

FishBase classifies it as a demersal, tropical stream species, and records its typical habitat as fast-flowing areas with pebble or rock substrate. The water is freshwater throughout its range; it is not a brackish species. In common with other hill-stream balitorids, it is likely sensitive to temperature increases and to siltation of its rocky substrate, both of which degrade the biofilm that constitutes its primary food source.

Feeding

Protomyzon griswoldi is an aufwuchs grazer — it feeds by rasping the thin biological film of algae, diatoms, periphyton and micro-invertebrates that coats submerged rock in well-lit, fast-flowing streams. FishBase records a trophic level of 2.7, consistent with a dietary emphasis on plant matter and detritus, typical of balitorid hillstream loaches feeding on biofilm. This mode of feeding demands a mature aquarium: a tank that has been running for months and whose rocks are covered in a visible, greenish-brown algal film.

In the aquarium, keepers should supplement the natural biofilm with blanched vegetables (courgette, spinach, cucumber), algae wafers and sinking spirulina-based foods, as well as small frozen foods such as daphnia, cyclops and baby brine shrimp. What the fish cannot tolerate is a bare, newly set-up tank with no biofilm: starvation is the most common cause of decline in hillstream loaches placed into clean, algae-free aquaria, often misread as a water-quality problem.

Mating

Almost nothing is documented about the reproductive biology of Protomyzon griswoldi specifically. FishBase records maturity data as unknown. In the broader context of hillstream balitorids, mating is poorly documented for most genera; where observations exist (notably in Sewellia lineolata from Vietnam), males are thought to compete for prime rockface territory and court females who then deposit eggs among or beneath stones in fast water.

There is no documented sexual dimorphism for this species, and distinguishing males from females in the aquarium would be speculative without reliable published data. Mature females of many balitorid species appear slightly broader-bodied when gravid, but this is not confirmed for Protomyzon. Given how rarely this genus appears in the trade, keepers are unlikely to hold confirmed pairs of known sex.

Breeding

Protomyzon griswoldi has not been bred in home aquaria under documented conditions, and it seldom appears in the ornamental trade in sufficient numbers to make breeding attempts likely. It is an egg-scatterer with no parental care — the pattern shared by hillstream loaches generally — dropping or burying eggs among stones in fast-flowing water, after which neither parent guards the spawn. A few hillstream loach species, notably Sewellia lineolata, have been spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river tanks, demonstrating that the group is not entirely out of reach for dedicated keepers; most genera, however, have not been reported as successfully bred in captivity.

For Protomyzon griswoldi, the honest position is that captive breeding has not been recorded in the available literature. The fish in the trade, where it does occasionally appear, will be wild-caught from Bornean streams. Keepers should not purchase this species expecting to propagate it. Simulating the conditions that might trigger spawning — cool, highly oxygenated, surging water, a mature biofilm-covered rockscape, and perhaps a seasonal cool-down — would be the starting point for any experimental effort.

In the aquarium

Protomyzon griswoldi is a specialist fish suited to a dedicated hillstream or river aquarium, not a general community tank. The core requirement is water movement: a strong, broad flow — typically generated by powerheads placed to create a circular current across smooth, algae-covered rocks and flat slate — that keeps dissolved oxygen near saturation and prevents siltation of the rocky substrate the fish grazes on. Temperature should be kept in the cooler part of the tropical range, approximately 64–79 °F (64–79°F); sustained temperatures above 82 °F are likely harmful, reducing dissolved oxygen and stressing fish adapted to cool torrents.

The aquarium must be mature: a hillstream tank that has not had months to develop a natural biofilm on its rock surfaces will starve this fish, regardless of how clean the water parameters look. A tight-fitting lid is essential — hillstream loaches are accomplished climbers and will exit through any gap. Because the skin is near-scaleless, copper-based medications and full-strength doses of many treatments must be avoided; if disease treatment is necessary, use half doses of copper-free products and watch the fish closely. This species does not need a large tank by volume, but it does need adequate surface area of flat rock and very high flow and oxygenation, which together demand a purpose-built setup.

Data on conspecific behaviour in Protomyzon are sparse, but most small hillstream balitorids are territorial at the rock-face level while being broadly tolerant of conspecifics in a sufficiently large space with multiple grazing territories. Keeping two or three fish is reasonable in a well-designed river tank; solitary keeping is unlikely to reveal the full range of natural behaviour.

Conservation

Protomyzon griswoldi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 25 January 2019. This reflects its presence across northern Borneo's hill-stream systems without evidence of a significant population decline at the time of assessment. Borneo remains one of the most biodiverse freshwater regions on Earth, and many of its hillstream endemics share this Least Concern status while still being genuinely vulnerable at the local level to the pressures that affect Sundaland's rivers.

Those pressures include deforestation, which increases turbidity and siltation that buries the rock biofilm hillstream loaches depend on; agricultural and palm-oil runoff that degrades water chemistry; and the damming and flow modification of upland streams. Stream-specialist species with narrow geographic ranges are inherently more exposed to local extirpation than their LC listing may imply. The aquarium trade in this species appears minimal, and the main conservation concern is habitat integrity in Bornean hill streams rather than collection pressure.
