Leporinus arimaspi was formally described in 2014 by Burns, Frable and Sidlauskas as part of a revision of Orinoco-basin headstanders. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Leporinus, one of the largest genera in that family, containing dozens of species distinguished chiefly by body banding pattern, fin colouration and subtle differences in dentition and body proportion.
The genus name Leporinus comes from the Latin lepus (hare), an old reference to the fish's protruding, incisor-like front teeth, which resemble a rabbit's. As a 2014 description, L. arimaspi postdates most of the popular aquarium-trade Leporinus (such as L. fasciatus and L. maculatus), and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats it as a currently valid, distinct species endemic to the Orinoco basin rather than a synonym or variant of an older name.
Morphology
Leporinus arimaspi has the classic headstander body plan: an elongated, moderately compressed body, a small terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth armed with the genus's characteristic incisor-like teeth, and a tail that sits noticeably higher than the head when the fish adopts its typical oblique, head-down grazing posture. FishBase records a maximum size of 7.5 in standard length for the species, placing it toward the smaller-to-middle end of the genus.
As with most Leporinus, exact colour pattern and banding are the main tools for field identification, though detailed pattern descriptions for this species are not well documented outside the original taxonomic description and subsequent museum records. Data on live colouration remain sparse.
Habitat
Leporinus arimaspi is endemic to the Orinoco River drainage in Venezuela, recorded from the Caura, Pamoni, Casiquiare, Manapiare and Ventuari tributary systems. As a general Leporinus, a mature specimen at up to 7.5 in needs a long tank with open swimming space, strong water movement and driftwood or rock for grazing, and keepers of the genus should be prepared for territoriality and fin-nipping — many Leporinus become increasingly quarrelsome and intolerant of slow-moving, long-finned tankmates as they mature. Vegetable-forward feeding (algae wafers, blanched vegetables) alongside protein is advisable given the grazing, partly herbivorous diet documented for the species.

Leporinus arimaspi is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. It is a narrow-range Orinoco-basin endemic, but the assessment reflects no immediate documented threat to its population within that range.
