Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus enyae was described in 2017 by Burns, Chatfield, Birindelli and Sidlauskas in Neotropical Ichthyology, as part of a broader taxonomic revision that untangled the "Leporinus desmotes species complex" — a group of superficially similar, barred headstanders from northern South America that had long been lumped together. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes, and to the large genus Leporinus, whose members are unified by their oblique, head-down grazing posture and elongated, often protruding front teeth.
The species epithet is an eponym honouring the musician Enya, a nod from the describing authors to her song "Orinoco Flow" — the type locality lies within the Orinoco River drainage that gives the song its name. As a 2017 description, L. enyae postdates most general fish references, so older literature and hobby sources that discuss "Leporinus desmotes" from the Orinoco region may in fact be referring, at least in part, to what is now recognised as this species.
Morphology
Leporinus enyae has the elongated, laterally compressed, torpedo-like body typical of the genus, patterned with roughly nine dark bars running across the head and body — a bold, high-contrast look shared with several of its close relatives from the same species complex. A distinguishing feature noted in its description is a set of long, pointed, upward-curving symphyseal teeth at the front of the lower jaw, more pronounced than in many congeners and part of what separates it from the other species carved out of the old L. desmotes complex.
FishBase records a maximum size of 7 in standard length for males and unsexed individuals, making L. enyae a comparatively modest member of a genus that includes considerably larger species. As with most headstanders, the mouth sits in a slightly subterminal position suited to grazing surfaces rather than mid-water hunting, and the body shape favours the fish's characteristic oblique, head-tilted-down posture at rest and while feeding.
Habitat
The species is known from the Orinoco River drainage in Venezuela and adjacent Brazil, including the Ventuari tributaries, the upper Río Negro and the Casiquiare canal — the natural waterway that links the Orinoco and Amazon systems. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical South American rivers, living in and around the sort of structured, flowing habitat — submerged wood, rocky and sandy stretches, and marginal vegetation — that offers grazing surfaces for its aufwuchs-feeding lifestyle.
The cache and current literature do not report specific water-chemistry measurements for L. enyae itself. Given its Orinoco/upper Negro/Casiquiare range, a mix of blackwater and clearwater conditions is plausible, but this should not be over-stated: it is more responsible to note that a keeper should replicate warm, soft-to-neutral South American river water in the absence of published, species-specific parameters.
Feeding
Like other Leporinus, L. enyae is best understood as a grazer or aufwuchs feeder rather than a predator: in the wild it works algae and biofilm off submerged wood, rock and other surfaces, angled head-down as it feeds, and it supplements this with small invertebrates and plant material encountered while grazing. The long, curved front teeth typical of this species are consistent with scraping and nipping at fixed surfaces rather than seizing fast prey.
No aquarium-specific feeding data for L. enyae was found. In the aquarium, related Leporinus take a vegetable-forward diet readily — algae wafers, blanched vegetables, spirulina-based foods and other plant matter — topped up with occasional protein such as bloodworm or quality pellets, and this general pattern is a reasonable, honestly-labelled starting point for this species pending direct observation.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented specifically for Leporinus enyae; as a species described only in 2017 with very limited hobby exposure, this is an honest gap rather than an oversight. Across the wider genus, Leporinus and their anostomid relatives are egg-scatterers with no pair-bonding or nest-building reported, and any pre-spawning behaviour that does occur is generally subtle rather than a distinct courtship display.
Breeding
Leporinus enyae has not been reported bred in the aquarium, and detailed breeding biology has not been documented for the species. As with most headstanders, the expected mode — based on the wider genus rather than direct observation of this species — is egg-scattering with no parental care: a spawning pair or group releases eggs into open water or over vegetation, with no nest, no guarding and no brood care afterward. A handful of other Leporinus and Anostomus species have spawned in large, well-conditioned aquaria and some Leporinus are farmed commercially, but L. enyae itself should be treated, honestly, as essentially unbred in captivity for now.
In the aquarium
At a modest maximum of about 7 in, Leporinus enyae is more manageable than many of its larger genus-mates, but it should still be given a long, well-filtered aquarium with open swimming space and driftwood or rock furnished with a healthy biofilm/algae layer to graze. Being a very recently described species, it has essentially no hobby track record of its own, so care should draw cautiously on the well-documented behaviour of related Leporinus such as L. fasciatus and L. striatus, which are known as territorial, sometimes nippy fish as they mature.
That caution matters: several Leporinus and Anostomus species are notorious fin-nippers and become increasingly territorial with age and size, and mixed reports suggest L. enyae should be assumed capable of the same behaviour until shown otherwise. A large group, or keeping it as a single specimen among robust, fast tankmates, is a safer default than a small, undersized group in a crowded tank. Given its algae-and-biofilm grazing habit, it will also pick at soft aquarium plants, so hardy, tougher-leaved species are a better match than delicate ones.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Leporinus enyae as Least Concern, an assessment dated 16 November 2020, with FishBase further characterising the species as having high resilience and low vulnerability to fishing pressure. No specific population-trend data or named threats were found in the sources reviewed.
As a species restricted to the Orinoco drainage — including the Ventuari, upper Negro and Casiquiare — it is worth flagging that this region faces ongoing pressures from mining, deforestation and water-quality change even though L. enyae itself is not currently classified as threatened. Its very recent description (2017) also means baseline population and distribution data are still comparatively thin, which is itself a reason for some caution in over-interpreting the Least Concern rating.
