Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus maculatus was described by the German ichthyologists Johannes Müller and Franz Hermann Troschel in 1844. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes — a family named for the anos- (upward-facing) mouth position typical of many of its genera, though the feeding posture in Leporinus is better described as oblique or head-down rather than strictly upward-pointing.
The genus Leporinus is large and taxonomically active; species-level identification in the trade is inconsistent, and fish sold as "Leporinus maculatus" or the spotted headstander may in practice represent more than one closely related, similarly spotted species from across the Amazon and Guiana Shield drainages. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the currently valid combination; this article follows the genus and species as given, Leporinus maculatus Müller & Troschel, 1844.
Morphology
The spotted headstander has the classic Leporinus body plan: an elongated, only moderately compressed, torpedo-like body built for steady cruising rather than burst speed, a small terminal-to-slightly-inferior mouth suited to grazing surfaces, and a single dorsal fin set well forward of the adipose fin near the tail. Ground colour is a gray-green to olive-silver, overlaid with a series of dark blotches or spots along the flanks that give the species its common and scientific name (maculatus, "spotted").
Size reports vary by source: most hobby accounts give a maximum of roughly 6–8 in, while FishBase records a sexually dimorphic maximum with males to about 7 in total length and females somewhat larger, to about 8 in — consistent with the general pattern in Leporinus of females outgrowing males. Keepers should plan around the top of that range rather than the smaller figures sometimes quoted.
Habitat
Leporinus maculatus is native to Amazonian and Guiana Shield river systems, with confirmed occurrence in Guyana and across the wider Amazon basin, including clearwater tributaries such as the Iriri, a tributary of the Xingu. Wild fish are typically found in creeks and river margins with swift-flowing water over sandy or rocky substrate, where current keeps hard surfaces clear of silt and rich in the algae and biofilm the species grazes.
Water across its range runs warm and mildly acidic to neutral: reported figures span roughly 70–81 °F and pH 5.9–7.5 depending on the specific tributary and source. This is a species of moving, well-oxygenated water rather than a still-water blackwater specialist, and aquarium filtration and flow should reflect that.
Feeding
The spotted headstander is fundamentally a grazer: in the wild it works algae and aufwuchs (the biofilm of algae, diatoms and small invertebrates coating submerged wood and stone) off hard surfaces at its characteristic head-down angle, supplementing that with small molluscs, crustaceans, aquatic plant material and opportunistically taken fish eggs. It is best described as omnivorous with a strong herbivorous lean rather than a true predator.
In the aquarium it takes a varied diet readily: quality pellets or flake as a base, with regular blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini, lettuce) to satisfy its grazing habit, plus occasional live or frozen protein such as brine shrimp, daphnia or bloodworms. Feeding once or twice daily with an emphasis on vegetable matter keeps the fish in good condition and reduces (though does not eliminate) its interest in tender aquarium plants.
Mating
Little is documented about courtship behaviour in Leporinus maculatus specifically; breeding accounts in the hobby and aquaculture literature describe broadcast spawning at night, with the pair releasing eggs over open substrate rather than engaging in an elaborate or prolonged courtship display. Reported external sexual dimorphism is limited to size and finnage: males are described as more vibrantly coloured with somewhat more elongated fins, while females run larger overall, consistent with the FishBase length data. This should be treated as an approximate field guide rather than a reliable sexing method.
Breeding
Leporinus maculatus is an egg-scattering broadcast spawner and is rarely bred in home aquaria; some Leporinus species are produced at a farmed/commercial scale, but hobby-level captive breeding reports for this particular species are scarce. Spawning is reported to occur at night, with eggs broadcast and effectively hidden among substrate or fine cover rather than deposited at a defended nest site.
There is no parental care: adults are reported to be removed after spawning to prevent them eating their own eggs, and the eggs are left to develop unguarded. Eggs hatch in roughly 72 hours at warm tropical temperatures, and fry are raised on powdered food or freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii once free-swimming. Prospective breeders should treat successful spawns as a genuine achievement rather than a routine outcome.
In the aquarium
Size the tank to the real adult length of 7–8 in: a spacious aquarium with open swimming room plus driftwood and rockwork for grazing surfaces suits this species far better than a small community tank. Provide strong filtration and some water movement to mirror the flowing water it comes from, along with well-oxygenated conditions.
Temperament is the point to get right before buying: Leporinus as a genus includes some notorious fin-nippers and territorial fish, and while the spotted headstander is not the worst offender, it is described as gregarious but capable of aggression toward smaller or lower-ranking tankmates, and it will graze on soft-leaved aquarium plants. Choose robust, similarly sized tankmates, avoid delicate long-finned species, and expect to lose tender plants unless they are tough, fast-growing or protected. This species is also a capable jumper, so a tight-fitting lid is not optional.
Conservation
Leporinus maculatus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, reflecting a wide distribution across Amazonian and Guiana Shield drainages and no documented major population decline. As with many widespread Amazonian stream fish, the main long-term watch items are habitat pressures common to the region — deforestation-linked sedimentation, water-quality change and localised damming — rather than any threat specific to this species. It is collected for the aquarium trade but is not flagged as a species of particular conservation concern.
