Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus moralesi was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1942 and is recognised as a valid species in the family Anostomidae (headstanders) within the order Characiformes. The genus Leporinus is large and diverse, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) remains the authority for its currently accepted membership; this account keeps the species in Leporinus as described, since no revision moving L. moralesi to another genus is documented in the sources consulted.
The species epithet honours Dr Carlos Morales Macedo (1888–1952), a Peruvian biologist who served as professor and director of the Museo de Historia Natural in Lima. ITIS (Integrated Taxonomic Information System) independently confirms Leporinus moralesi Fowler, 1942 as a currently valid name, consistent with FishBase's treatment of the species.
Morphology
Leporinus moralesi shares the elongated, cylindrical-to-laterally-compressed body plan typical of Leporinus: a pointed snout, a terminal to slightly subterminal mouth suited to grazing rather than grasping prey, and the incisor-like teeth characteristic of the genus for scraping algae and plant material from hard surfaces. FishBase records a maximum published length of 12 in total length, placing it among the larger headstanders kept in aquaria rather than one of the smaller nano-scale grazers such as Chilodus.
