Leporinus pachyurus is a South American headstander from the Amazon and Paraná river basins, one of the many banded Leporinus species that hobbyists rarely tell apart from its more famous relatives. Like other headstanders it grazes at a steep, head-down angle over rocks and submerged wood, rasping algae and biofilm from hard surfaces in flowing water. Data on this particular species is thin — no aquarium-trade profile documents it directly, and its conservation status has not been formally assessed — but the genus's honest reputation travels with it: many Leporinus are territorial, fin-nipping fish that outgrow the expectations of a casual buyer. Taxonomy & naming

Leporinus pachyurus was described by the French ichthyologist Achille Valenciennes in 1850. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family characterised by an oblique, upward-pointing mouth and the head-down grazing posture that gives the group its common name. The species has since been referenced in taxonomic redescription work covering Leporinus from the Rio Paraná basin, and it is treated as a valid species in taxonomic databases such as WoRMS.

The genus Leporinus is large and taxonomically active, with many superficially similar banded or spotted species that are difficult to distinguish without close examination of fin-ray counts, scale counts and colour-pattern detail. As with other members of the genus, hobbyist and retail material for L. pachyurus is essentially absent, and it should not be assumed to share a common name or care profile with better-known relatives such as the banded leporinus (L. fasciatus).

Morphology

Detailed morphological description for Leporinus pachyurus is sparse in the sources consulted. FishBase does not report a maximum size figure for this species. They should be given generous swimming space, structure (rock and wood) to establish grazing territories over, and tankmates robust enough to shrug off nipping. Given the unknown adult size of this species, a keeper should plan for a large tank and be prepared to rehome the fish if it outgrows its setup — never assume a Leporinus will stay small.
