A small whiptail loricariid endemic to the headwaters of the Rio Uruguai drainage in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, Rineloricaria capitonia was described in 2008 as one of nine new species from that system. Classified as Least Concern but infrequent in collections, it faces low-level pressure from hydroelectric development on its narrow range of highland streams.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria capitonia was described by Ghazzi in 2008 in the paper 'Nine new species of the genus Rineloricaria (Siluriformes, Loricariidae) from Uruguay River, southern Brazil,' published in Iheringia, Série Zoologia (volume 98, number 1, pages 100–122). The type locality is the Rio Alegre, on the road between Condor and Colônia, municipality of Condor, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — as cited in the IUCN assessment — recognises Rineloricaria capitonia as a valid species.

Rineloricaria Bleeker, 1862 is the largest genus in the subfamily Loricariinae, with dozens of described species distributed broadly across South America east of the Andes. The genus belongs to the whiptail loricariid group characterised by a strongly depressed body, elongate caudal peduncle often ending in a filamentous ray extension, and paternal egg-guarding breeding strategy.

A taxonomic review of the Laguna dos Patos drainage by Rodriguez and Reis (2008) in Copeia (issue 2, pages 333–349) is cited alongside Ghazzi (2008) as a key reference for Rio Grande do Sul Rineloricaria, providing broader context for the species complex in this region. The Portuguese vernacular name violinha ('little violin') reflects the classic flattened, long-handled body shape common to all Rineloricaria.

Morphology

Rineloricaria capitonia reaches a maximum of 7.5 in standard length (SL). The body is elongated and strongly depressed in the typical Rineloricaria fashion, armoured with overlapping bony scutes on the dorsal and lateral surfaces. The dorsal fin carries 8 soft rays; the anal fin carries 6 soft rays.

The IUCN assessment provides a morphological diagnosis distinguishing R. capitonia from congeners: the abdomen is partially plated, with three large plates preceding the pre-anal plate; anteriorly, two to three series of ellipsoidal plates do not reach the level of the pectoral-fin insertion; a set of small plates below the gill openings does not contact the lateral abdominal plates. Additionally, the snout tip is naked, extending posteriorly to the anteriormost pore of the infraorbital sensory canal; the pectoral fins reach only the first third of the pelvic fins; and the caudal fin bears a dark band on its distal margin.

As in other Rineloricaria, breeding males develop hypertrophied odontodes on the head, snout margin, and along the pectoral-fin spines during the reproductive season — prominent bristle-like projections used in male–male competition and mate assessment. Females are generally broader-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

Rineloricaria capitonia is endemic to the middle and upper Rio Uruguai drainage in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Known localities include the Rio Alegre and Rio Palmeira (tributaries of Rio Ijuí), the Rio Passo Fundo, and the upper Rio Ijuí; a single record from Santa Catarina requires confirmation.

The Uruguai basin in Rio Grande do Sul drains the southern Brazilian plateau and flows through subtropical highlands before entering the lowland floodplain. These rivers are characterised by clear to slightly turbid water, predominantly lotic (flowing) conditions, and substrates of sand, gravel, and rock in the highland stretches.

Rineloricaria species in general occupy benthic habitats in flowing water, resting on sandy or rocky substrate and wedging into crevices or beneath debris. The IUCN assessment notes that R. capitonia shows a lotic preference — faster-flowing sections rather than still or slow water. The species' restricted range across a handful of interconnected river systems in a single Brazilian state makes it more vulnerable to local habitat modification than wide-ranging congeners.

Feeding

No species-specific dietary data for Rineloricaria capitonia are recorded in the sources consulted. FishBase assigns a trophic level of 2.5 (±0.2), consistent with a detritivore and biofilm-grazer feeding mode. This is typical for the genus, whose members scrape algae, periphyton, fine organic detritus, and associated micro-invertebrates from hard and soft substrate using the ventrally positioned, disc-like sucking mouth.

In the aquarium, Rineloricaria species in general accept sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based tablets, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), and occasional live or frozen small invertebrates. A sandy substrate is preferred both for natural foraging behaviour and to prevent abrasion to the ventral surface and dermal scutes.

The genus is known to be capable of facultative air-breathing, a feature that allows survival in temporarily oxygen-depleted conditions, such as those that can occur in warm, shallow streams during summer low-water periods.

Mating

Rineloricaria capitonia is presumed to follow the reproductive pattern well established across the genus. As the breeding season approaches, males develop dramatically enlarged odontodes on the head and along the dorsal margin of the pectoral-fin spines — hypertrophied bristle-like structures that serve in male–male confrontations over spawning territory and presumably as a signal to females.

Males establish and defend sheltered spawning sites — crevices, hollows beneath flat stones, or tubes — on or near the substrate. Territorial interactions between males involve lateral displays and occasional brief contact. Gravid females are noticeably wider across the body, particularly posterior to the pectoral fins, and have a swollen, rounded genital papilla distinguishable from the smaller, pointed papilla of males.

No aquarium courtship observations specific to R. capitonia have been published. Husbandry for inducing breeding in this species can draw on the extensive hobbyist literature for closely related Rineloricaria such as R. lanceolata.

Breeding

No captive breeding records specific to Rineloricaria capitonia are available in the sources consulted. Based on the thoroughly documented breeding biology of the genus, spawning takes place in a sheltered cavity; the male then guards and fans the adhesive egg mass through incubation, maintaining water movement across the clutch to prevent fungal colonisation and oxygen depletion.

In other Rineloricaria species, clutch sizes range from a few dozen to over a hundred eggs, incubation lasts roughly one to two weeks at tropical and subtropical temperatures, and the male remains with the eggs until hatching. Fry emerge as miniature adults, already plated, and begin grazing biofilm and fine particulate matter independently within days.

R. capitonia originates from subtropical Rio Grande do Sul, where water temperatures are cooler and more seasonally variable than in Amazonian systems. Aquarists keeping it may find that a winter temperature dip — consistent with its natural subtropical origin — helps condition adults and trigger spawning attempts in spring.

In the aquarium

Rineloricaria capitonia is a small whiptail loricariid with an adult size under 8 in SL, placing it in a workable size range for moderately sized aquaria. A tank of 20 US gal or more with a fine sandy substrate, clean well-oxygenated water, and subdued or shaded areas suits the benthic lifestyle of the species.

The subtropical origin of R. capitonia in Rio Grande do Sul means it is more cold-tolerant than most aquarium loricariids. Water temperatures in the natural range are likely lower than typical tropical tank conditions, and the species may not require or benefit from heating to 79–82 °F year-round; cooler conditions of 68–75 °F are probably more natural.

Diet should follow best practice for the genus: sinking vegetable-rich foods (algae wafers, spirulina tablets, blanched courgette or cucumber) form the staple, supplemented occasionally with live or frozen bloodworm or Tubifex. Provide flat stones, short PVC pipes, or sections of bamboo as potential spawning sites if breeding is intended.

As the species is not yet established in the ornamental trade and has not appeared in major hobbyist databases, availability outside Brazil is expected to be very limited.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria capitonia as Least Concern in 2018 (published 2022), assessed by Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The species is endemic to Brazil, restricted to the middle and upper Rio Uruguai drainage in Rio Grande do Sul, and is described as infrequent and not abundant in collections.

The primary identified threats are hydroelectric dams within the species' range: Usina Hidrelétrica São José and UHE São João on the Rio Ijuí, and UHE Passo Fundo on the Rio Passo Fundo. However, the IUCN assessment concludes that these do not place the population at significant risk at present, and the population trend is unknown.

The species is not recorded from any protected area. Research priorities identified by the IUCN include surveys of population size and distribution and collection of life-history data. The narrow endemism of R. capitonia — confined to a small cluster of streams in a single Brazilian state — means that future infrastructure development or water-quality degradation in Rio Grande do Sul's highland rivers warrants monitoring.
