A slender whiptail catfish from the subtropical rivers of southern Brazil, Rineloricaria reisi is one of nine species formally described by Ghazzi in 2008 from the Uruguay River basin. Like its close relatives, it brings a quietly reptilian elegance to the aquarium floor — and the notable habit of paternal egg-guarding that makes whiptails among the most rewarding loricariids to breed.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria reisi was formally described by Ghazzi in 2008 in Iheringia, Série Zoologia (volume 98, number 1), as one of nine new species from the Rio Uruguay drainage of southern Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Rineloricaria reisi Ghazzi, 2008 as a valid name, with the taxonomic authority for valid names assigned to Eschmeyer et al. 2018 in the IUCN assessment.

The species epithet honours Dr Roberto Esser dos Reis, a distinguished Brazilian ichthyologist who has contributed significantly to the taxonomy of South American freshwater fishes, including loricariids and characids of the southern cone.

Rineloricaria is one of the most speciose genera within subfamily Loricariinae — the whiptail catfishes — and sits within Loricariidae alongside four other recognised subfamilies. Morphologically, members of Rineloricaria are characterised by an extremely elongate, dorsoventrally flattened body, a ventrally positioned suckermouth, and a distinctive, long filamentous extension of the upper and lower caudal-fin rays. The genus presents persistent taxonomic challenges because of overlapping characters between numerous sympatric or parapatric species; the Uruguay basin species group described by Ghazzi represents a concentrated effort to resolve this diversity in the southernmost reaches of the genus.

R. reisi is distinguished from its closest relative, R. misionera, by the pattern of abdominal plate contact: in R. reisi, the small lateral abdominal plates contact the lateral plates, a configuration absent in R. misionera. Additional distinguishing features include a naked pectoral girdle region, a small cluster of plates below the gill openings that contact the lateral abdominal plates, and a naked oval area at the snout tip that does not extend posteriorly.

Morphology

Adults of R. reisi reach a maximum recorded standard length of 8 in SL — large for the genus, though most wild and aquarium specimens are likely somewhat smaller. The body is the classic whiptail form: extremely elongate and strongly depressed (flattened top-to-bottom), tapering to a narrow, whip-like caudal peduncle and filamentous caudal-fin extensions.

The dorsal surface is armoured in the typical loricariid fashion with overlapping odontode-bearing plates. The abdomen is partially covered with plates — a key diagnostic character of this species — specifically a set of irregular series of small plates that decrease in size anteriorly and terminate before reaching the level of the pectoral-fin insertion. The pectoral girdle region itself is naked. A discrete set of small plates below the gill openings contacts the lateral abdominal plates. The snout tip bears a naked oval area without odontodes, and this bare region does not extend posteriorly along the snout.

The suckermouth is ventral and equipped with numerous small, bicuspidate teeth suitable for scraping biofilm and aufwuchs from hard substrates. Dorsal soft rays number eight; anal soft rays six — counts consistent with the genus.

Breeding males develop hypertrophied odontodes along the lateral and ventral surfaces of the snout and pectoral spine — the 'bristles' that distinguish reproductively active males. This odontode development is pronounced compared with females and subadult males, making sexing straightforward during the breeding season. Females tend toward a wider body profile when gravid.

Habitat

Rineloricaria reisi is endemic to Brazil, known from the Rio Piratini and Rio Ijuí within the Rio Uruguay drainage, both in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The type locality is Rio Piratini, at Fazenda Hinz, district of Coimbra, near Santo Ângelo, Rio Grande do Sul.

The IUCN assessment notes a lotic (running-water) habitat preference — permanent rivers and streams with current. The species is described as infrequent and not abundant across its range, which adds some uncertainty to population-level ecological observations. Rio Grande do Sul lies in the subtropical zone of southern Brazil, where water temperatures are seasonally variable and generally cooler than the tropical Amazonian drainages that characterise most loricariid habitats. Winter temperatures in these rivers can drop considerably.

Whiptails in general are associated with soft substrates — sand, silt, and leaf litter — in slow to moderate current, where their depressed, cryptically coloured bodies render them nearly invisible against the riverbed. Whether R. reisi shows the same sediment-associating microhabitat preference is not documented in the available literature, but it is consistent with the broader habits of the genus.

Hydroelectric development poses a habitat concern: the IUCN assessment identifies two planned or operating dams on the Rio Ijuí (UHE São José and UHE São João) that convert lotic reaches to lentic impoundments. While not considered a significant threat to overall population viability at the time of assessment, such alterations are directly adverse to current-dependent rheophilic species.

Feeding

Like other members of Rineloricaria, R. reisi is primarily a biofilm and detritus feeder, using its ventral suckermouth to rasp algae, diatoms, organic detritus, and associated microorganisms from hard substrates and leaf surfaces. The trophic level recorded by FishBase is 2.4 (±0.2 SE), consistent with a primarily herbivore-detritivore feeding guild.

Facultative air-breathing has been recorded within the genus Rineloricaria — a useful adaptation in seasonally hypoxic or drying habitats in subtropical South America. Whether R. reisi specifically employs this capacity is not confirmed, but the physiological basis is present in close relatives.

In the aquarium, whiptails like R. reisi readily accept sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach). A substrate of fine sand allows natural foraging behaviour, as these fish sift and rasp the surface constantly. Supplementing with occasional live or frozen invertebrate food — bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp — is beneficial, particularly when conditioning fish for breeding.

Mating

Breeding males of Rineloricaria develop strikingly enlarged odontodes on the snout and along the pectoral spine during the reproductive season — the 'cheek bristles' that make males instantly recognisable when sexually active. These odontodes likely function in male-male competition for nest sites and in tactile courtship interactions with females.

Males are territorial around chosen nest sites — typically a crevice, a hollow tube, a section of bamboo, or any tight space that closely fits the male's body profile. Courtship involves the male maintaining position at the entrance to the nest site and displaying to passing females. Rival males are confronted and driven off; the interaction is generally confined to posturing and brief contact rather than damaging fights, but persistent conflict in a small aquarium can stress subordinate males.

Females in breeding condition are broader-bodied than males of comparable length, particularly evident when the fish are viewed from above. Once a female accepts the male and the nest site, spawning occurs inside the cavity.

Breeding

Rineloricaria reisi, like the majority of genus members, is a cave spawner with exclusive paternal brood care. The male claims and defends a tight-fitting nest cavity — a length of PVC pipe, bamboo tube, or similar shelter with an internal diameter that matches the fish's body width — and remains with the egg clutch throughout incubation.

After spawning, the female plays no further role; the male fans the clutch with his pectoral and caudal fins to maintain oxygenation and removes any infertile or fungused eggs. Incubation typically lasts several days at warmer subtropical temperatures; cooler conditions extend the incubation period. Newly hatched fry are miniature versions of the adults and begin grazing almost immediately.

Whiptails in the Rineloricaria liniata group and related species are relatively tractable breeders in the aquarium when conditions are suitable — soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, a mature aquarium with biofilm-covered surfaces, and tight-fitting nest tubes or hollow decor. The somewhat larger size of R. reisi compared with some hobbyist whiptail species means appropriately sized tubes (roughly 1–1.5 in internal diameter for adults) are important.

Specific breeding data for R. reisi are sparse in the literature and hobby records, reflecting its limited presence in the ornamental trade.

In the aquarium

Rineloricaria reisi is not a commonly encountered species in the aquarium trade. Its subtropical origin — the southernmost reaches of the Rio Uruguay basin — distinguishes it from the majority of loricariids kept by hobbyists, which come from warmer Amazonian or Orinoco drainages. This has practical implications: R. reisi can likely tolerate — and may benefit from — cooler temperatures than typical tropical loricariids, possibly down to 64–68 °F in winter without harm, though this has not been confirmed for the species specifically.

For an adult reaching close to 8 in SL, a suitably sized aquarium is required — a minimum footprint of around 100 × 15.5 in is a sensible target for a single pair, with larger quarters preferred. Fine sand substrate is ideal, allowing natural foraging posture and preventing abrasion of the delicate ventral surface. Several tight-fitting cave structures (bamboo tubes, PVC pipe sections, ceramic tubes) should be provided both for security and as potential nest sites.

Water should be clean and well-oxygenated, consistent with lotic habitat preferences. Weekly partial water changes are important. Given the subtropical origin, hard or warm water is suboptimal; slightly soft to moderately hard, neutral to slightly acidic water at 72–79 °F is a reasonable target range, though specific data for this species are lacking.

Compatible tankmates include other peaceful bottom dwellers and small to mid-sized schooling fish. Avoid housing with large, aggressive species that may harass or injure a resting whiptail. Rineloricaria species are generally non-aggressive toward other fish but may be territorial among themselves if nest sites are limiting.

Given the scarcity of this species in trade and the documented habitat pressures from dam construction within its range, sourcing from reputable breeders rather than wild-caught imports is preferable where captive-bred stock is available.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria reisi as Least Concern in an assessment published in 2022 (assessment date 7 November 2018), conducted by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The assessment notes that the species is infrequent and not abundant across its range in Rio Grande do Sul, with population trend unknown.

The principal identified threat is hydroelectric development: the UHE São José and UHE São João hydroelectric schemes on the Rio Ijuí convert stretches of lotic river habitat to lentic impoundment. Whiptail catfishes with lotic habitat preferences — as indicated for this species — are susceptible to such alterations. At the time of assessment these impacts were not considered sufficient to threaten overall population viability, but continued dam expansion in the region warrants monitoring.

No conservation programmes are directed at this species, and its occurrence within protected areas is not confirmed. The IUCN assessment identifies research needs: population size, distribution, and basic life-history data. The species is not known to be collected in significant numbers for the ornamental trade.

Being one of nine species described from the Uruguay basin by Ghazzi (2008), R. reisi belongs to a recently clarified species complex in which accurate field identification remains important for targeted conservation planning.
