Taxonomy & naming
Rineloricaria stellata was described by Miguel Sebastián Ghazzi in 2008, in a paper titled 'Nine new species of the genus Rineloricaria from Uruguay River, southern Brazil' published in Iheringia, Série Zoologia (volume 98, number 1, pages 100–122). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and FishBase both list the valid name as Rineloricaria stellata Ghazzi, 2008; the absence of parentheses around the authority reflects that the species has remained in the genus in which it was originally described.
The genus Rineloricaria sits within the subfamily Loricariinae, the elongate, adipose-fin-less branch of the suckermouth armoured catfishes (Loricariidae). Ghazzi's 2008 revision underscored how species-rich and previously under-resolved the whiptail fauna of the Río Uruguay basin is, with several closely similar forms — R. stellata among them — formally separated for the first time.
