Taxonomy & naming
Potamotrygon henlei was formally described by Castelnau in 1855, based on specimens from the Tocantins basin of Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) places it in the genus Potamotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes. The family is a naturally defined group of obligate freshwater stingrays found exclusively in South America — one of the most remarkable evolutionary radiations in vertebrate history, descendants of marine rays that became isolated in the river systems of the continent and diversified there.
These are elasmobranchs: cartilaginous fish, class Chondrichthyes, whose skeleton is formed entirely of cartilage rather than bone, and whose nearest relatives are the sharks and the skates and rays of the sea. In the context of an atlas that covers bony fishes almost exclusively, the distinction matters: river stingrays belong to a fundamentally different vertebrate lineage, sharing with no other fish in these pages the electro-sensory system, the venomous spine, the claspers, or the viviparous mode of reproduction.
The species has been traded under the name 'black river stingray' or simply 'henlei' in the aquarium hobby; some sources list trade synonyms, but the name Potamotrygon henlei (Castelnau, 1855) is accepted and valid in current nomenclature. The epithet honours the German ichthyologist and naturalist Johann Wilhelm Henlé, who co-authored foundational work on elasmobranch taxonomy alongside Müller in the nineteenth century.
Morphology
The body form of P. henlei is the family standard: a strongly flattened, roughly circular pectoral disc formed from the fused pectoral fins, with the eyes and paired spiracles set on the dorsal surface and the mouth, gill slits, and cloaca on the ventral side. The disc is the business end of this fish — used for locomotion, for pressing prey against the substrate, and for covering and concealing the ray while buried in sand. Disc width in adults reportedly reaches around 23.5 in in females; males and unsexed individuals have been cited to around 17.5 in disc width, making this a large species that demands a correspondingly large aquarium footprint.
The coloration is distinctive and the reason for the species' appeal: the dorsal surface is deep brownish-black to black, covered in a pattern of small, regularly spaced yellow to orange spots or ocelli of varying size; the contrast is particularly bold in juveniles and can fade somewhat with age. The tail is moderately long and bears a serrated venomous spine near its base — a modified dermal denticle with venom-producing tissue in a groove along the underside, shed and regrown periodically. The skin is covered not in scales but in minute tooth-like denticles (placoid scales), characteristic of all elasmobranchs. Males are immediately distinguished from females by the paired claspers — rod-like extensions of the inner pelvic fin margins, the copulatory organs of elasmobranchs — while females grow larger overall.
Habitat
Potamotrygon henlei is an extreme endemic, recorded only from the Tocantins and Araguaia river systems of central Brazil — a tributary basin of the Amazon that drains eastward through the Brazilian Shield before joining the lower Amazon above Marajó Island. This is a system of clear to moderately turbid water, with substrate largely of sand and fine sediment, and the species is associated with sandy banks, shallow marginal zones, and seasonally flooded forest edges characteristic of this basin type.
The water conditions in the Tocantins basin are soft and acidic to near-neutral: pH values in the range 5.8–7.5 and temperatures of 73–82 °F are recorded, reflecting the shield-river character of the system rather than the highly mineralised white-water of the Amazon mainstem. Like all river stingrays, P. henlei is a benthic specialist that lies partially buried in substrate with only the dorsally positioned eyes and spiracles exposed; the spiracles — paired openings on the top of the head — allow the fish to draw in oxygenated water for respiration while the mouth, on the underside, is pressed against the bottom. The species does not tolerate salt and is a strict freshwater fish throughout its life.
Feeding
Potamotrygon henlei is a benthic carnivore, feeding on bottom-dwelling invertebrates and small vertebrates as found across the sandy and silty substrates of the Tocantins. Prey includes aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, molluscs, worms, and small fishes — the typical diet of the genus. Detection of buried or cryptic prey is aided by the ampullae of Lorenzini, the electroreceptor pores that are scattered over the underside of the disc and allow the ray to sense the faint bioelectric fields of living organisms in and on the sediment. Once prey is located, the ray pins it under the disc and works it back to the crushing tooth plates in the lower jaw.
In captivity, P. henlei accepts the standard stingray diet of meaty, protein-rich foods: prawns, earthworms, mussels, fish fillet, and other whole or chunked fresh or frozen items offered on the substrate. It learns to take food from the keeper and can become associative with feeding routines. The species has a high metabolic demand and produces a substantial organic waste load, making the tension between its appetite and its water-quality sensitivity one of the central management challenges in the aquarium.
Mating
Reproduction in P. henlei follows the elasmobranch model of internal fertilisation — the same system used by all sharks and rays, entirely distinct from the external spawning of bony fishes. A male identifies a receptive female through chemical and electroreceptive cues, then approaches and grips the margin of her disc with his mouth — courtship bites leave semicircular marks that are visible on wild-caught females and in captive pairs. He manoeuvres to bring one of his paired claspers into alignment with the female's cloaca and transfers sperm via a clasper groove; fertilisation takes place internally.
Captive breeding of P. henlei has been achieved, confirming that the mating behaviour described above can succeed under managed conditions. As in all Potamotrygonidae, no pair bond forms and no territory is established around a clutch; after mating the male's role ends, and the entire subsequent development of the embryos takes place inside the female. There is no external-egg stage, no nest, and no paternal involvement of any kind.
Breeding
Potamotrygon henlei is viviparous — it gives birth to live young — using the specialised mode of fetal nutrition characteristic of all Potamotrygonidae: matrotrophic histotrophy. After the small yolk supply of the fertilised egg is exhausted, the embryos are nourished inside the uterus by histotroph, a protein- and lipid-rich 'uterine milk' secreted by the uterine wall and taken up by the embryos directly. This secretion, distinct from the yolk of egg-laying fishes, is the primary energy source for fetal growth and allows the pups to reach a substantial size before birth.
Females of P. henlei carry a litter of one to eleven pups — Seriously Fish records a range of 1–11 — through a gestation of nine to twelve weeks, after which fully formed, independent miniature rays are born. The pups are capable of burying and feeding within days of birth and receive no parental care after delivery. The combination of a small maximum litter, a gestation measured in months, and a period of years before sexual maturity gives P. henlei a fundamentally low reproductive rate — a biological fact with serious conservation implications for a species already under commercial harvest pressure.
In the aquarium
Potamotrygon henlei is a desirable and regularly traded aquarium fish by virtue of its striking coloration, but it is an advanced species with requirements that few casual fishkeepers can meet. An adult female can approach 23.5 in disc width; the tank footprint must be several times that measurement in both length and width, with the floor area — not the water volume — being the critical dimension. A deep bed of soft, fine-grained sand is not optional: P. henlei buries habitually, and coarse or sharp substrate will abrade the disc and create persistent open wounds.
Water quality must be exceptional. P. henlei is scaleless, with a thin, permeable integument, and is acutely sensitive to ammonia and accumulated nitrate at levels that many bony fishes tolerate without visible effect. Heavy biological filtration, regular large water changes, and careful management of feeding amounts are all essential. The water must be warm (73–82 °F), soft to moderately hard, and slightly acidic to near-neutral (pH 6.0–7.5); no salt is added. Medications containing copper must never be used. Tankmates should be peaceful, non-nippy, and large enough not to be eaten.
The venomous sting imposes responsibilities that prospective keepers must take seriously. A wound from the serrated caudal spine is intensely painful, causes severe local tissue damage, and may require medical attention; fatalities, though rare, are on record. The species is consequently unsuitable in any household with young children and is legally restricted or subject to a permit requirement in many countries and regions. Import of wild-caught specimens is now subject to CITES Appendix II controls (since February 2023); captive-bred stock, which is available sporadically, is strongly preferred both ethically and practically, as captive-bred animals are generally healthier, better acclimated to aquarium conditions, and not subject to the same permitting burden as wild imports.
Conservation
Potamotrygon henlei is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List (2024 assessment), a status that reflects both its extremely narrow distribution and the suite of pressures bearing down on it. The species is endemic to the Tocantins and Araguaia basins — a geographic range that is tiny by the standards of the Amazon basin — meaning that any threat to those rivers has no 'elsewhere' to fall back on: there are no alternative populations in another system.
The primary drivers of decline include the ornamental aquarium trade, which prior to CITES listing extracted on the order of 1,000 specimens per year from wild populations in Brazil under IBAMA quota; illegal collection beyond those quotas; and incidental take and killing by fishing communities and by people afraid of the sting. At the same time the Tocantins basin has been substantially modified by hydroelectric development — most prominently the Tucuruí dam (one of the largest in the world) and, more recently, the Belo Monte complex on the lower Xingu (an adjacent system) — altering sediment dynamics, thermal regimes, and access to seasonal floodplain habitat that river stingrays depend on. Mercury contamination from artisanal gold mining in the basin adds chemical stress.
Potamotrygon henlei was listed on CITES Appendix II effective 23 February 2023 (CoP 19), requiring that any international trade in the species is accompanied by a non-detriment finding and legal acquisition documentation. Brazil has long regulated exports through IBAMA, and captive-bred exemptions exist in principle but supply remains limited. Given the species' low reproductive rate — small litters, a gestation of weeks to months, and years to sexual maturity — populations cannot absorb sustained harvest, making the shift to verified captive-bred stock the single most important practical step the hobby can take.
