Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Copadichromis nkatae is a utaka cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi and named for the bay where it was first collected: Nkhata Bay, on the lake's north-western shore. Like the other utaka it is fundamentally a plankton-picker, hovering near the sand-and-rock interface to glean zooplankton from the water column, and it breeds in the haplochromine fashion as a maternal mouthbrooder. Drab silvery females and non-breeding fish give little hint of the metallic blue that dominant males assume over their sandy spawning arenas. Although wide-ranging utaka as a group are among the lake's most abundant fishes, nkatae has a narrow documented range and is currently assessed by the IUCN as Critically Endangered.

Taxonomy & naming

Copadichromis nkatae was described by the British fisheries biologist Thomas D. Iles in 1960 as Haplochromis nkatae, on material from Mayoka Point in Nkhata Bay (then Nkata Bay), Lake Malawi (Lake Nyasa). It was one of a suite of pelagic and intermediate-zone haplochromines Iles worked through during the colonial-era Nyasa fisheries surveys, when the lake's plankton-feeding 'utaka' were still all parked in the catch-all genus Haplochromis. When Eccles & Trewavas erected Copadichromis in 1989 to hold the utaka and their relatives, nkatae was transferred into it; the authority is therefore parenthetical — (Iles, 1960) — reflecting the original placement in a different genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the type locality as 'Mayoka Point, Nkata Bay, Lake Malawi' and confirms the parenthetical combination. Stauffer & Konings (2006) reviewed Copadichromis comprehensively, refining the diagnostic characters that separate the many superficially similar utaka. The species remains valid in Copadichromis and is so listed by FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Copadichromis nkatae is a medium-sized, fusiform utaka. FishBase lists a maximum of about 5.5 in total length, in line with the other open-water Copadichromis of the lake. The body plan is the classic utaka one: a streamlined, laterally compressed fish with a terminal, protrusible mouth suited to picking individual plankters from open water, and a single, modest set of dark lateral markings on a silvery-beige ground in non-breeding fish. Colour, not shape, is the signal that matters in this genus, and it is strongly sex- and status-linked. Females, juveniles and subordinate males stay plain silvery to beige, while a dominant, territorial male takes on the metallic blue breeding livery typical of the utaka, displayed over his sand bower. Precise meristic counts and the fine morphological characters separating nkatae from its congeners follow the diagnoses set out in Stauffer & Konings' 2006 revision of the genus.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Lake Malawi, where FishBase records it occurring around rocks and over sandy beaches — the intermediate and sandy-shore habitats favoured by many utaka rather than continuous rock or true open pelagic water. Its name ties it to Nkhata Bay on the north-western coast, the type locality, and its documented range within the lake is narrow; the IUCN treats it as highly restricted, which underpins its threatened listing. Lake Malawi's inshore and sublittoral water in this zone is warm, alkaline and moderately mineralised: surface temperatures broadly in the mid-20s Celsius and a pH around 7.7 to 8.6, with the upper water column well oxygenated. Like other utaka of the sand/rock interface, nkatae is a relatively shallow- to moderate-depth fish of the upper sublittoral rather than a deep-water specialist; FishBase does not publish a precise depth band for the species.

Feeding

Copadichromis nkatae is a utaka, and the utaka are Lake Malawi's open-water zooplankton specialists. FishBase summarises its diet as feeding mainly on zooplankton but also taking phytoplankton, and places it at a low trophic level of about 2.8. Functionally it hangs near the sand-and-rock interface and picks copepods, their nauplii and other small zooplankton from the water column, supplementing this with suspended phytoplankton. This is the ecological role that makes the utaka collectively so important: they convert the lake's enormous standing crop of plankton into fish biomass, supporting both the offshore food web and a major local food fishery prosecuted with chirimila plankton nets.

Mating

As in the other utaka, reproduction in Copadichromis nkatae is organised around male-held territories on the substrate. Dominant males in blue breeding dress establish and defend spawning sites — sand bowers or cleared arenas at the sand/rock interface — and court visiting females from them, while females, juveniles and subordinate males remain in loose foraging groups away from the territories. Because several closely similar Copadichromis can share the same inshore zones, female mate choice presumably keys on the dominant male's breeding coloration and display to ensure conspecific spawning. Aggression in the genus is directed mainly at rival males of similar appearance; less-similar neighbours are more readily tolerated.

Breeding

Copadichromis nkatae is a maternal (ovophilous) mouthbrooder, the standard reproductive mode of the haplochromine cichlids of Lake Malawi. Spawning takes place over the male's territory: the female deposits her eggs, takes them into her mouth, and they are fertilised as she mouths at the male in the usual haplochromine fashion. The female alone then incubates the eggs and larvae buccally and provides all subsequent parental care, releasing free-swimming fry only after the yolk is absorbed; the male contributes no fry care. Clutch sizes are not well documented for this species in the wild, but like other utaka it produces relatively modest broods consistent with the energetic cost of mouthbrooding.

In the aquarium

Copadichromis nkatae is rarely seen in the hobby. It is not commercially farmed in any quantity and its Critically Endangered status — and possible extinction in the wild — means it is essentially absent from mainstream trade; if a fish is sold under this name it is worth verifying the identification against Stauffer & Konings (2006), because several blue-male utaka are superficially similar and mislabelling is common. Anyone fortunate enough to obtain correctly identified nkatae should treat the fish as a responsibility rather than a novelty.

Because the species is a midwater plankton-feeder that cruises open water, space matters more than elaborate decoration. A tank of 80 US gal (roughly 59 in long) is a workable minimum for a group, but larger is better; the fish becomes visibly stressed and aggressive in cramped quarters. Leave the central third of the tank as unobstructed open water. A soft sand substrate — Malawi-appropriate silica or aragonite — suits the sand-bower display and gives females somewhere to turn away from persistent males. A few modest rock stacks along the back and sides define territories without blocking swimming room. Strong filtration is standard for any Malawi cichlid: these fish evolved in a vast, well-oxygenated, low-nutrient lake and do not tolerate poor water quality.

Water chemistry should reflect the lake: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, and moderately hard alkaline water (general hardness around 10–20 °dH; carbonate hardness to match). Reverse-osmosis water reconstituted with a Malawi buffer salt, or naturally moderately hard tap water brought up with calcium carbonate and magnesium sulphate additions, both work well. Weekly water changes of 25–30 % are advisable; stability matters as much as the headline numbers.

Suitable tankmates are other calm Lake Malawi haplochromines of similar size — peacocks (Aulonocara) and other non-aggressive haps. Aggressive rock-dwelling mbuna are a poor match: their territorial style and different ecological template generate chronic stress in open-water utaka, and mbuna occupy the inshore zones that a utaka male needs as a bower site. One group strategy that works in larger tanks is a harem of one dominant male and two or three females, with a compatible peacock group occupying the same volume. Mixing closely related Copadichromis species risks hybridisation and should be avoided.

Feeding is straightforward as long as the diet stays plankton-like in texture. Quality dried foods — small pellets and flake, ideally spirulina-based or formula blended for Malawi cichlids — should be the staple, supplemented with frozen or live Artemia, Daphnia, and cyclops. Large meaty foods rich in animal fat (bloodworm in excess, beef heart, or live feeder fish) predispose utaka to Malawi bloat, a rapidly fatal gut infection that is the most common cause of death in poorly managed Malawi tanks; keeping the diet lean and varied is the single most important husbandry precaution. Breeding in the aquarium follows the typical utaka pattern: a dominant male clears a shallow sand depression, courts females, and the female mouthbroods alone for three to four weeks; removing the brooding female to a quiet holding tank once the eggs are taken protects the brood from being harassed into premature release.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Copadichromis nkatae as Critically Endangered, in an assessment dated June 2018. The listing reflects the species' very restricted documented range within Lake Malawi combined with harvesting pressure: FishBase records it as commercially used in both the food fishery and the aquarium trade, and utaka are a primary target of the lake's chirimila plankton-net fishery. As with other narrow-range Malawi endemics, the combination of intensive subsistence fishing and ornamental collection on a fish known from only a small part of the lake is the core conservation concern. The species carries no CITES listing. The backdrop is the broader pressure on Lake Malawi — heavy fishing effort, shoreline disturbance and sedimentation — against which the status of localised utaka such as nkatae should be read.
