Taxonomy & naming
The four-spot utaka was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1922, in his foundational revision 'The Cichlid Fishes of Lake Nyassa' (Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London), as Haplochromis quadrimaculatus. The type locality is given simply as Lake Malawi (then Lake Nyasa). Over the following decades the name was shuffled through the catch-all Malawi genera, appearing for a time in the combination Cyrtocara quadrimaculata, before Eccles and Trewavas erected the genus Copadichromis in 1989 and designated this species its type — making quadrimaculatus the nomenclatural anchor of the whole genus. Because the species has been moved out of its original genus, its authority is written with the describer in parentheses: (Regan, 1922). Copadichromis was created to gather the utaka, the shoaling zooplankton-feeders of the open water, which Regan and later workers had scattered across Haplochromis, Cyrtocara and Nyassachromis; the genus is diagnosed by a small, strongly protrusible mouth and a long series of fine, numerous gill rakers suited to filtering plankton. Within the genus, quadrimaculatus heads its own 'quadrimaculatus group' of similar four-blotched forms, and several undescribed relatives travel under provisional names such as Copadichromis sp. 'quadrimaculatus yellow'.
Morphology
Copadichromis quadrimaculatus is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid that reaches roughly 8 in in total length, making it one of the larger utaka; FishBase lists a maximum of 8 in TL and a length at first maturity around 7 in. The common name refers to the diagnostic pattern: a longitudinal row of four dark blotches along the side of the body, the markings that Regan's epithet records. Non-breeding fish and females are a plain, countershaded silver that blends into open water, while courting males flush into nuptial colour — populations vary, and the lake holds several geographic colour forms of the species and its near-relatives, including blue-headed males and the distinct yellow-finned form known as 'quadrimaculatus yellow' from Mozambican reefs such as Taiwanee Reef. The mouth is small but highly protrusible, shooting forward to engulf individual planktonic prey, and the gill arches carry a long basket of fine rakers. Sexual dimorphism follows the usual haplochromine pattern: males grow larger and develop the bright breeding dress and egg-spots on the anal fin, whereas females and juveniles remain silvery and cryptic.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Malawi and, on the evidence of FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes, is widespread and essentially lake-wide, recorded along the Malawian, Mozambican and Tanzanian coasts (roughly 9 to 15 degrees south). The Stuart Grant / M.K. Oliver database malawi.si lists its distribution flatly as 'lake-wide,' and documents the species at sites scattered around the lake, from Tsano Rock in the south to the Mozambican shore at Meponda and Taiwanee Reef. Utaka of this kind are benthopelagic: they shoal in the open water just off rocky and intermediate coasts rather than burying themselves among the rocks like the mbuna. Konings places Copadichromis as fishes of the upper, well-lit water column over reefs and the rock-sand interface, typically within the first few to a few tens of metres of depth where their planktonic food is densest. As an inhabitant of Lake Malawi's surface layer, the species lives in warm, hard, alkaline water — the lake runs about 24 to 28 degrees Celsius at the surface with a pH near 7.7 to 8.6 — and is confined to the oxygenated upper zone above the lake's permanently anoxic depths.
Feeding
Copadichromis quadrimaculatus is an open-water zooplanktivore, the trophic role that defines the utaka. It feeds by picking individual planktonic animals — copepods, cladocerans and other micro-crustaceans, together with insect larvae and pupae drifting in the water column — from the water, using its small, telescoping mouth to suck prey in one at a time and its long, fine gill rakers to retain them. FishBase places the species at a low trophic level of about 2.6, consistent with a diet of small invertebrates rather than fish or attached algae. Great shoals of utaka over the reefs are a conspicuous part of the lake's pelagic food web, converting the lake's plankton bloom into fish biomass; that same abundance makes the utaka, including this species, an important target of Malawi's artisanal and commercial fisheries, where they are netted in quantity as a food fish.
Mating
Like most Copadichromis, the four-spot utaka is a polygamous, lek-style breeder in which males do the display work and females choose. Outside breeding the fish move in mixed shoals; when they come into condition, males leave the shoal and establish temporary breeding territories on open sand or at the rock-sand interface, often clustering into loose arenas. There a male clears and tends a spawning site — in many Copadichromis a shallow sand crater or low bower, frequently placed beneath or beside an overhanging rock — and defends it against rival males while displaying his nuptial colours to passing females. The four flank blotches and the male's bright breeding dress serve as visual signals during this courtship. Females visit the arena, assess displaying males, and spawn with their chosen partner before departing; males hold their sites only transiently and contribute no care beyond fertilisation.
Breeding
Copadichromis quadrimaculatus is a maternal mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode shared across the utaka and most of Lake Malawi's haplochromines. Spawning follows the classic haplochromine sequence: the female lays a clutch of eggs on the male's cleared site and immediately takes them up into her mouth, then nuzzles the egg-spots on the male's anal fin so that she draws in his milt and fertilises the eggs inside her buccal cavity. She alone carries the developing brood, incubating the eggs and then the larvae in her mouth for roughly three weeks (about 21 days is typical for the genus) without feeding, before releasing free-swimming fry. After release the young of open-water utaka are left to fend for themselves in the shoals; there is no biparental care, and the male's involvement ends at spawning. Precise wild clutch counts for this species are not documented in the public literature; among the open-water utaka the best-quantified figure is Smith's (2000) mean of about 49 eggs (roughly 30 to 60) in the allied Copadichromis chrysonotus, and quadrimaculatus is expected to fall in that genus-typical range — modest fecundity reflecting the relatively high per-offspring investment of a mouthbrooder.
In the aquarium
Copadichromis quadrimaculatus is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade. Unlike the more commercially popular utaka such as Copadichromis borleyi or Copadichromis azureus, the four-spot utaka is seldom exported, and keepers who do obtain it usually source it through specialist Malawi breeders or importers rather than the general hobby chain. Anyone writing about this species as a common aquarium fish would be overstating the case; it is largely a collector's fish, and most husbandry guidance must be extrapolated from the utaka group generally, of which it is a typical member.
Because it is an active, shoaling, open-water fish that naturally patrols extensive stretches of lake, a large tank is essential — a minimum of around 71 in (six feet) in length is the standard recommendation for open-water haplochromines of this size, and bigger is better. The species reaches 8 in and males are territorial at breeding time, so cramped quarters quickly produce chronic aggression and stress. Decor should follow the Lake Malawi convention: a deep sand substrate, a modest arrangement of rocks toward the back and sides to establish territory markers and line-of-sight breaks, and — critically for a midwater feeder — a generous open swimming volume in the middle and front of the tank. Dense planting is inappropriate; this is a fish of bare, sun-lit, open water.
Water chemistry must match the lake: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, and high hardness (general hardness above 10 °dGH is typical for Malawi setups). Biological filtration needs to be robust, and regular partial water changes — typically 25–30 percent weekly — are important both to maintain alkalinity and to dilute waste in the high-protein diet these fish need. Like all Lake Malawi cichlids the species is vulnerable to Malawi bloat, an intestinal condition linked to metabolic stress, poor water quality, or a diet too high in terrestrial animal protein; keepers should feed high-quality cichlid preparations with spirulina or krill as the main protein components rather than beef heart or other fatty land-animal foods.
Compatible tankmates are calmer, similarly sized haplochromines and peacocks (Aulonocara species) that share the lake's open-water, non-combative ecology. Aggressive mbuna — Pseudotropheus, Melanochromis, Labeotropheus and the like — are poor companions: their relentless territorial harassment will prevent the less aggressive utaka from feeding and resting normally, and the mixing of diet types (aufwuchs-scrapers versus zooplanktivores) creates husbandry conflicts. A well-chosen Malawi community of Copadichromis, Sciaenochromis, Placidochromis, and Aulonocara, with enough space and decor to distribute aggression, gives the best results.
In a spacious, well-maintained tank a breeding colony will occasionally spawn without special intervention. Males develop full nuptial colour and clear sand bowers near rock edges, and after spawning the female holds the brood for approximately three weeks. Broods are modest in the utaka manner — roughly 30 to 60 fry is a reasonable expectation based on the allied Copadichromis chrysonotus — and the female should ideally be moved to a quiet holding tank for the last week of incubation to avoid the stress that causes premature mouth-release. Overall this is a moderately demanding fish: the water chemistry and tank-size requirements are non-negotiable, and the relative rarity of the species in trade means keepers are unlikely to find authoritative species-specific advice outside the specialist Malawi community.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Copadichromis quadrimaculatus as Least Concern (assessed 22 June 2018), citing its wide, lake-wide distribution and the absence of any major range-wide threat. The species carries no CITES listing and is regarded as harmless to humans. It is, however, a commercially important food fish: utaka are netted in quantity across Lake Malawi, and the broader utaka stocks have shown signs of fishing pressure in the most heavily exploited areas. The wider backdrop is the health of Lake Malawi itself, where shoreline deforestation, sedimentation, nutrient run-off and intensifying artisanal fisheries are recognised pressures on an endemic fish fauna of exceptional diversity. None of these is documented as an immediate, population-level threat to this particular species, which remains common and widespread, but they are the context in which its long-term status should be read.
