Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax brachypterygium was described by Vinícius Abilhoa Bertaco and Luiz Roberto Malabarba in 2001, in a paper published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters that also described a second new Astyanax from southern Brazilian headwaters. The work focused on the 'A. scabripinnis species complex', a long-recognised assemblage of small, high-altitude stream tetras from the Atlantic and La Plata drainages of Brazil that had accumulated numerous nominal forms and remained taxonomically unstable. The paper provided an integrative framework to separate them by meristic and morphological characters.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Astyanax brachypterygium Bertaco & Malabarba, 2001. The genus Astyanax is one of the most species-rich vertebrate genera on Earth and the dominant characid genus in South and Central America. Phylogenetic analyses have placed A. brachypterygium in a clade with Psalidodon cremnobates and P. laticeps, though the species is currently retained in Astyanax in Eschmeyer. The family is Characidae.
Morphology
Astyanax brachypterygium reaches a maximum standard length of 2.5 in. Like other members of the scabripinnis complex it is a small, moderately deep-bodied tetra with the typical characid body plan: fusiform, laterally compressed, with an adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal. The name-giving character — the short anal fin — separates it metrically from related species: the anal fin has 16 to 20 soft rays, a lower count than typical for the broader complex. Dorsal fin counts are 2 spines and 9 soft rays; vertebral count is 34 to 36.
The species is benthopelagic in habit, occupying both the mid-water and the streambed layer of the small highland streams where it occurs.
