At a maximum of 1.5 in standard length it ranks among the smallest members of its genus, and its entire life — from hatch to death — unfolds within a single wet season: the adults perish when their pools dry out, leaving drought-resistant eggs buried in the mud to carry the population through the dry months in diapause. Behr in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 2, number 1), with the type locality given as a temporary lagoon close to the rio da Várzea, at Fazenda dos Branda, near the town of Carazinho in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Austrolebias varzeae (Costa, Reis & Behr, 2004); the authority is presented in parentheses because the species was originally placed in a genus from which it has since been moved in some treatments.

FishBase and the American Killifish Association currently treat this species under the revised combination Amatolebias varzeae, reflecting a genus-level revision that split Amatolebias out of Austrolebias for a subset of small, deep-bodied species in the upper Uruguay drainage. Catalog of Fishes, which governs valid names on this site, retains Austrolebias varzeae, and that combination is used here. Hobbyists who search for the species under the AKA listing or FishBase will encounter both names; the two refer to the same fish.

The specific epithet varzeae refers to the várzea — the Portuguese and Brazilian ecological term for seasonally flooded lowland terrain, particularly the floodplains and waterlogged grasslands associated with river systems — a direct reference to the type of habitat in which this killifish lives.

Morphology

Austrolebias varzeae is a very small fish, with FishBase recording a maximum of 1.5 in standard length — placing it at the diminutive end of the Austrolebias spectrum. Like other members of the genus it is laterally compressed with a deep body relative to its length, and the sexual dimorphism typical of annual killies is pronounced: males are more intensely pigmented and colourful, while females are smaller, rounder when gravid, and cryptically coloured in the olive-brown tones common to substrate-spawning female killies.

Detailed meristic and colour descriptions for this species are sparse in the accessible literature beyond the original 2004 description. Males can be expected to display the iridescent patterning characteristic of small Austrolebias and related genera — metallic body colouration with fin patterning that intensifies during courtship display. The small body size relative to other Austrolebias species is consistent with the ecological niche of a very shallow, short-lived seasonal pool.

Habitat

The native range of Austrolebias varzeae is restricted to the da Várzea River drainage, a tributary system of the upper Uruguay River basin, in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil. The type locality — a temporary lagoon on the Fazenda dos Branda property near Carazinho — is representative of the habitat type: shallow, seasonal depressions and floodplain lagoons that accumulate water during the warm, wet austral summer and dry out completely during the drier, cooler winter months.

These are subtropical grassland pools in the southern Brazilian highland plateau, characterised by soft, organically rich sediments — the muddy substrate into which the fish spawn. Water temperatures follow the strong seasonal cycle of the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, dropping to low values in winter after the pools have already dried. Water chemistry in comparable upper Uruguay seasonal pools tends toward slightly soft and near-neutral to mildly acidic, reflecting the siliceous soils of the highland plateau rather than the calcareous lowland Pampas.

The García et al. Feeding

Seasonal pools of the upper Uruguay basin support abundant populations of microcrustaceans, chironomid larvae, small oligochaetes, and aquatic insects during the wet season, and these form the natural prey base for small annual killies.

In the aquarium, small Austrolebias species accept live and frozen invertebrates scaled to their diminutive size: Daphnia, Moina, small bloodworms, Artemia nauplii, and micro-worms are all appropriate. The small adult size of 1.5 in SL means that prey items must be carefully sized; oversized food is ignored or rejected. Conditioning on live food is especially effective in triggering spawning activity in both sexes.

Mating

Austrolebias varzeae reproduces by the substrate-spawning annual killifish method: the pair court and spawn directly into the soft sediment of their pool, burying fertilised eggs that will survive the dry season in arrested developmental diapause. Males display to females with intensified colouration and lateral fin presentations, driving competing males away from favoured females in the restricted space of a shallow seasonal pool.

When a female is receptive, the pair align side by side and execute the spawning dive together into the peat or mud substrate. The male curves his body around the female as eggs and sperm are released simultaneously into the sediment. The fertilised eggs are left buried as the pair return to the water column. Spawning is repeated throughout the productive life of the pair — which in a typical annual killi spans only a single wet season of a few months. The rapid onset of sexual maturity and continuous spawning behaviour throughout adult life are adaptations to the very short window of biological productivity that seasonal pools afford.

Breeding

Like all annual killies, Austrolebias varzeae eggs undergo diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development in which the embryo can survive the complete desiccation of its natal pool. In nature the adults die as the pool evaporates in the dry season; the eggs, insulated in the anaerobic sediment, remain viable through months of drought and resume development rapidly when rainfall refills the pool, typically hatching within hours to days of re-wetting.

In the aquarium the standard annual killi protocol applies: a spawning tank furnished with a thick layer of peat moss or coconut-fibre substrate is provided for the pair. After a spawning period of four to eight weeks, the peat is removed, lightly compressed to retain some moisture, sealed in a plastic bag or container, and stored at room temperature in darkness for the diapause period — typically two to four months for small Austrolebias species, though the precise incubation duration for A. varzeae is not well documented in the available hobbyist literature. After the storage period, the peat is re-wetted with aged, slightly acidic water and the fry hatch promptly. The fry are relatively large at hatching for a fish this small and accept Artemia nauplii as an immediate first food. Growth is rapid: the annual life-history strategy demands that fish reach reproductive maturity within weeks, well ahead of the next dry season.

Austrolebias varzeae is a specialist fish suited to killifish keepers familiar with the annual Austrolebias group. Its very small size — under 1.5 in SL — means that a modest tank of 2.5–4 US gal is sufficient per pair and that tankmates must be chosen carefully or, ideally, not included at all. A dedicated breeding setup with a deep peat or coco-peat substrate, subdued lighting, and plant cover in the form of floating vegetation or fine-leaved emergent plants provides the most suitable conditions.

The American Killifish Association lists this species under Class 3 (South American Annuals) and maintains a species account under the Amatolebias varzeae revision, reflecting the active hobbyist community that cultivates Austrolebias sensu lato. Because population data are limited and the species is Vulnerable in the wild, accurately labelled captive strains with documented provenance are of genuine conservation value. Keepers should maintain records of the source population and avoid hybridising strains.

Water conditions should reflect the slightly soft, near-neutral chemistry of the upper Uruguay highland pools: pH 6.5–7.0, moderate softness, and temperatures in the subtropical range of 64–75 °F. The brief natural lifespan means the aquarist must plan the full annual cycle — spawning collection, peat storage, re-wetting — rather than simply maintaining adults as long-term aquarium residents. The reward is a fast life-history that can yield multiple successive generations within a single calendar year under managed conditions.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Austrolebias varzeae (listed there under Amatolebias varzeae) as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion D2, reflecting its extremely restricted range: criterion D2 is applied to species with a very limited area of occupancy or number of locations such that the species could become Critically Endangered or Extinct within a very short time frame if the single threat materialises. The assessment was conducted by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), Brazil's federal conservation agency.

The García et al. (2025) synthesis of Austrolebias conservation confirms that approximately 75% of species in the broader Austrolebias assemblage appear on the IUCN Red List — an extraordinarily high proportion that reflects the group's collective vulnerability as single-basin or single-drainage endemics in a heavily modified landscape. For A. varzeae, the specific threat is the transformation of seasonal floodplain pools in the da Várzea River drainage of Rio Grande do Sul: soy, wheat, and livestock agriculture in this part of southern Brazil has eliminated or degraded large areas of the temporary wetland habitats on which annual killies depend. Unlike permanent rivers or large lakes, shallow seasonal pools have no legal protection framework and are routinely drained, ploughed, or converted to stock ponds.

The VU D2 criterion is a warning that a single drainage-scale agricultural event — one large-property conversion or a wet-season chemical spill in the da Várzea catchment — could eliminate the entire known range. Captive populations maintained by killifish specialist societies such as the American Killifish Association represent a meaningful safety net, provided strains are kept true to their collection locality and not allowed to hybridise with congeners.
