Moenkhausia cotinho is a small, quietly attractive characid from the Amazon and Orinoco basins, reaching about 2.5 in standard length and wearing a reticulate body pattern — dark spots along the posterior edges of each scale — that gives it a fine-meshed, almost chain-link look in good light. A dark blotch marks the caudal-fin base, and the upper iris glows red to orange: classic Moenkhausia hallmarks that place it comfortably in one of the most species-rich tetra genera. First described by Carl Eigenmann in 1908, it remains a minor fish in the hobby but a useful study in how a well-studied morphology set can untangle a difficult genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia cotinho was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1908, based on material collected in Pará state, Brazil, during the Thayer Expedition. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) lists the valid name as Moenkhausia cotinho Eigenmann, 1908; the authority is not parenthetical because the species was described in the genus where it currently resides.

The genus Moenkhausia is one of the largest and most morphologically challenging in the family Characidae, with more than a hundred described species ranging across tropical South America. A 2021 taxonomic revision published in Zootaxa examined the reticulate-patterned species complex and confirmed M. cotinho as a valid species distinguishable by a combination of scale counts, lateral-line pore patterns, and the details of its caudal blotch. The species ranges widely across the Amazon and Orinoco river basins and has also been recorded from river drainages in the Guianas, making it one of the more broadly distributed members of its genus. Morphology

Moenkhausia cotinho is a compact, laterally compressed characid with a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in. The body is moderately deep, the typical Moenkhausia oval, and is marked by a reticulate colour pattern: each scale on the flank carries a dark spot or crescent along its posterior edge, creating a net-like mosaic when the fish is in good light. This pattern is the species' most immediately recognisable feature and distinguishes it from Moenkhausia species with plain or striped flanks.

A dark blotch sits at the base of the caudal fin, not extending to the posterior tips of the middle caudal rays — a diagnostic character noted in the Zootaxa revision that separates M. cotinho from certain close relatives where the blotch is broader. The upper half of the iris is red to orange. Scale counts follow a 5-above / 3-below arrangement relative to the lateral line, and most specimens show a complete pored lateral line; a few specimens from Guiana rivers show an incomplete lateral line. The pectoral fins are short and do not reach the pelvic-fin base.

Habitat

The species inhabits freshwater throughout the Amazon River basin and Orinoco River basin of South America, with additional records from rivers in Guyana and Suriname. FishBase classifies it as a benthopelagic freshwater fish, meaning it occupies the water column from mid-water to near the bottom rather than being strictly surface- or bottom-dwelling.

For any aquarist attempting to breed this species, the approach that works for related Moenkhausia — a separate, dimly lit breeding tank with a layer of fine-leaved plants or synthetic mops, soft acidic water warmed to around 79–82 °F, a well-conditioned pair or small group, and prompt separation of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation — would be a reasonable starting point. First foods for fry would include infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry foods, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia cotinho remains insignificant in the aquarium hobby, and it is rarely available in the trade under its own name. Where it does appear, it would be kept much like any moderately sized, peaceful Amazonian tetra: a group of six or more in a planted aquarium with gentle filtration, subdued lighting, and soft acidic water in the range of 75–79 °F and pH 5.5–7.0, parameters that suit the broader community of South American tetras and dwarf cichlids.

Its modest size of around 2.5 in makes it compatible with most peaceful community fish, and the reticulate scale pattern is attractive enough to justify a closer look from hobbyists seeking something less commonly seen. Small live or frozen foods alongside quality flake or micro-pellets would keep it in good condition. The relative scarcity of dedicated care records means aquarists working with this species are largely extrapolating from the well-documented husbandry of related Moenkhausia, which is a reasonable approach given the genus' broadly consistent requirements.
