Moenkhausia dichroura, the bandtail tetra, is a slender characid of the Amazon, Paraguay, and Orinoco basins, recognised by the bold dark band at the base of the caudal fin that gives it its scientific name and its common name. Distributed widely across South America — from Brazil and Paraguay down into Argentina and across to Peru and Venezuela — it nonetheless remains scarce in the aquarium hobby, where its exacting water-quality requirements and modest colouration have kept it a specialist's fish rather than a mass-market staple.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia dichroura was originally described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1858 under the name Tetragonopterus dichrourus, in a paper on characins published in the Sitzungsberichte der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien. The type locality is the Paraguay River basin in Brazil. The species was subsequently transferred to Moenkhausia, the large pan-Neotropical characid genus erected by David Starr Jordan in 1895, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records it as Moenkhausia dichroura (Kner, 1858) — the parenthetical authority reflecting the change in genus from the original description.

Moenkhausia is one of the most species-rich genera in the family Characidae, encompassing a broad array of small to medium-sized tetras distributed across the river systems of tropical and subtropical South America. Within the genus, M. dichroura is grouped among species sharing the caudal-spot or caudal-band character. GBIF records the species from the Amazon, Paraguay, and Orinoco drainages, consistent with a wide lowland South American distribution spanning Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Paraguay, and Venezuela.

Morphology

The bandtail tetra is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed characid. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 4 in, though aquarium specimens commonly range between 6 and 3 in. The body is silvery, with the typical Moenkhausia translucency that shows the internal organs faintly through the flank. Finnage is largely hyaline.

The defining marking is the caudal-fin base band: a dark, roughly crescent-shaped blotch situated at the peduncle and the proximate rays of both lobes of the tail, which is where the specific epithet dichroura (Greek for 'two-coloured tail') derives. A faint lateral stripe may be visible on fresh or well-conditioned specimens, but the overall colouration is subdued compared with many popular tetras. Coloration is enhanced by dark substrate, floating plants that diffuse overhead light, and driftwood décor that mimics the fish's tannin-stained natural habitat.

Habitat

Moenkhausia dichroura is a lowland river fish of tropical South America, recorded from the Amazon, Paraguay, Paraná, and Orinoco drainage systems. Its range spans Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela. It inhabits slow-moving to standing marginal waters — forest-edge streams, flooded zones, and tributaries — often with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, abundant plant growth, submerged roots, and leaf litter.

Reported water parameters from hobbyist and database sources indicate a temperature range of 72–79 °F and a pH preference of 6.5–7.0, with moderately soft water (GH 8–12 dH). FishBase lists moderately hard conditions (up to dH 12) as tolerated, consistent with a species whose range crosses several distinct drainage systems. Feeding

Moenkhausia dichroura is an omnivore with a trophic level of 3.5 (FishBase), indicating a diet that spans both plant and animal material. In the wild it forages opportunistically on small invertebrates, insect larvae, and organic detritus, supplemented by algae and fine plant matter.

In the aquarium it accepts a wide variety of foods: high-quality flakes, small pellets, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, Daphnia, brine shrimp, and mosquito larvae. Pre-conditioning with live and frozen foods is particularly valuable before spawning attempts. Offering varied nutrition maintains fish health and condition, which is important for a species with otherwise demanding husbandry requirements.

Mating

Moenkhausia dichroura is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, in keeping with most small Neotropical characids. Males display to receptive females in fine-leaved vegetation or over spawning mops, with little documented sexual dimorphism to distinguish the sexes externally; ripe females may appear fuller-bodied.

The species is described as quite rare in the hobby and breeding events are poorly documented in the aquarium literature. Care notes suggest that pre-spawning conditioning with live and frozen foods — bloodworm and mosquito larvae in particular — helps bring fish into breeding condition. Spawning is most likely to occur in a dedicated breeding setup with subdued light, soft acidic water, and dense plant cover or spawning mops.

Breeding

Aquarium breeding of Moenkhausia dichroura is rarely documented, reflecting the species' scarcity in the hobby and its demanding water-quality requirements. Where spawning has occurred, the fish follows the standard egg-scattering mode: eggs are deposited among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops without subsequent parental investment, and adults may eat both eggs and newly hatched fry if not removed.

A breeding tank should be well-established, lightly lit, and furnished with Java moss, fine-leaved aquatic plants, or synthetic spawning mops. Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.5–7.0, GH 8–12) within the temperature range of 72–79 °F is recommended. Eggs should be transferred to a separate rearing vessel after spawning. Fry require very fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry preparations — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Detailed clutch-size and incubation data remain sparse in the published hobby literature.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia dichroura is classified as a peaceful schooling fish but is noted by multiple sources as demanding in its water requirements — not a beginner species. FishBase and hobbyist care guides agree that high water quality, soft to moderately soft water, subdued lighting, and stable conditions are prerequisites for keeping it successfully long-term.

A group of at least six individuals is recommended to reduce stress and encourage natural schooling behaviour. The tank should be aquascaped with dark substrate, floating plants to filter overhead light, and driftwood or twisted roots to mimic the shaded, tannin-influenced waters the species inhabits in the wild. Well-filtered water with peat or botanicals to maintain soft, slightly acidic conditions is beneficial. Suitable tankmates are other peaceful, similarly sized characids and soft-water species that share the same parameter preferences. Despite its subdued colouration, the bandtail tetra's natural deportment and schooling behaviour make it an attractive choice for a carefully maintained species-appropriate biotope aquarium.

Conservation

Moenkhausia dichroura is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, most recently evaluated in 2021. This status reflects its wide distribution across multiple major South American drainage systems — the Amazon, Paraguay, Paraná, Orinoco, and their tributaries — and the absence of evidence of rapid population decline.

While no immediate extinction threat is recorded, the broader pressures facing Neotropical freshwater fishes apply here: deforestation-driven habitat degradation, water pollution, and hydrological alteration of the lowland river systems the species inhabits. The bandtail tetra's scarcity in the aquarium trade means that commercial collection pressure is minimal. Its resilience is rated high by FishBase, with a population-doubling time under 15 months — a life-history trait that helps buffer against localised disturbance.
