Moenkhausia gracilima is a slender, small-bodied characid of the Amazon basin, reaching roughly 2.5 in standard length and carrying the understated elegance typical of its genus. Known in the hobby as the Sardine Tetra and in its Brazilian homeland as Lambari or Piaba, it was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann from syntypes collected along the Amazon at Villa Bella and Serpa, and was once treated as a subspecies of M. lepidurus before being elevated to full species rank by Géry in 1992. The IUCN assesses it as Least Concern, reflecting a range that spans much of the Amazon River basin.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia gracilima was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1908 as part of the Zoölogical Results of the Thayer Brazilian Expedition, based on syntypes deposited at the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ 20983) and the United States National Museum (USNM 120279). The type localities are Villa Bella and Serpa on the Amazon River in Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Moenkhausia gracilima Eigenmann, 1908 as the valid name; no parenthetical authority is used because the species was described directly in Moenkhausia.

For some decades the fish was treated as a subspecies, Moenkhausia lepidurus gracilimus, but the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry revised the group in 1992 and reinstated it as a full species. It belongs to the large neotropical family Characidae and the species-rich genus Moenkhausia, which contains dozens of small to medium-sized tetras distributed across tropical South America. Additional material has been documented from the Rio Machado drainage of the rio Madeira basin in Rondônia, Brazil, suggesting the species has a broader distribution within Amazonia than the original type series indicated.

Morphology

Moenkhausia gracilima is a slender, fusiform characid with a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in, in keeping with the trim body plan its common name Sardine Tetra evokes. Like most members of its genus it is laterally compressed, with a moderately large eye, a small terminal mouth, and the adipose fin characteristic of the family.

The species' coloration is typical of the gracilima-lepidurus group: a silvery body with a variable dark lateral stripe or mid-lateral pigmentation that may intensify under stress or during display. The caudal peduncle often carries a dark mark at its base. Fin coloration tends to be hyaline to faintly yellowish. Detailed meristic data (scale counts, fin-ray formulae) are available in Eigenmann's original description and subsequent revisions, but the species is best identified in the field by body proportions, lateral-line scale counts, and the pattern of lateral pigmentation combined with geographic context.

Habitat

Moenkhausia gracilima occupies the freshwater habitats of the Amazon River basin in Brazil. FishBase categorises it as benthopelagic, moving through the water column in tropical lowland rivers and associated waters. It has been recorded from the main Amazon channel environs near Serpa and Villa Bella as well as from the Rio Machado drainage in Rondônia, a tributary of the rio Madeira — one of the Amazon's major western affluents.

Like many Amazonian characids it almost certainly uses flooded marginal vegetation, side channels, and quieter backwaters in addition to main-channel habitats. The Amazon basin's soft, warm, often slightly acidic blackwaters and clear-water rivers both fall within the genus Moenkhausia's broad tolerance, though precise water-chemistry records for M. gracilima at its collection sites are sparse in the available literature.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level of 3.3 (±0.5) for Moenkhausia gracilima, placing it in the omnivore to low-level carnivore range that characterises most small Amazonian characids. In the wild the diet is presumed to include small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and small terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface — supplemented by algae, plant material, and organic detritus as opportunity allows.

In the aquarium, Sardine Tetras accept a wide variety of foods. A staple of good-quality small-pellet or flake food supplemented regularly with live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, or bloodworm provides the nutritional breadth the species needs. Its small mouth size should be considered when selecting prepared foods; finely crushed or purpose-sized micro-pellets are preferable to large granules.

Mating

Moenkhausia gracilima, like virtually all members of its genus, is an egg-scattering, open spawner. Males pursue and court receptive females with lateral displays, and spawning takes place among fine-leaved vegetation or in open water, with the pair releasing eggs that may become slightly adhesive on contact with plant matter or sink to the substrate.

No parental care is given. Courtship behaviour in the wild is unstudied in detail, but the pattern follows the genus-wide norm: active male pursuit, parallel swimming alongside the female, and a brief lateral press at the moment of egg release. In a group setting multiple males may compete for access to a ripe female.

Breeding

Breeding Moenkhausia gracilima in captivity follows the standard approach for egg-scattering characids. A well-conditioned pair or small group can be moved to a dedicated spawning tank furnished with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, or with synthetic spawning mops, and given slightly warmer water and live foods to trigger spawning. Eggs are released in open water or among the plant mass and are typically adhesive enough to cling briefly to vegetation before settling.

The adults show no parental care and will consume eggs if given the opportunity, so the spawning medium should be removed — or the adults separated — once spawning is complete. Eggs hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures. The fry are initially small and require fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial micro-fry preparations before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp. Detailed breeding records for this specific species are sparse in the hobby literature, but the procedure mirrors that of related Moenkhausia species.

In the aquarium

The Sardine Tetra is an active, peaceful schooling fish suited to a community aquarium housing other similarly sized, non-aggressive species. It does best in groups of six or more, which allow the fish to school naturally and reduce individual stress. A planted aquarium with open swimming space and subdued or moderate lighting replicates something of the dappled Amazonian riparian environment and brings out the best behaviour.

Water conditions should be warm — consistent with the tropical Amazon basin — and the species likely tolerates a moderate range of pH given its occurrence across different Amazon drainages, though soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water is a reasonable target. Good filtration and regular water changes are more important than hitting narrow chemical parameters. FishBase notes high population resilience and low fishing vulnerability, which together suggest a robust fish in captivity given adequate care. Suitable tankmates include other small characids, peaceful rasboras, small corydoras catfishes, and dwarf cichlids.

Conservation

Moenkhausia gracilima is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 7 November 2018. This reflects the species' occurrence across the broad Amazon River basin — one of the world's largest and most biodiverse river systems — and the absence of known population-level threats sufficient to warrant a more elevated category.

The Amazon basin faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, dam construction, and climate-driven hydrological changes, which affect many of its fish species in aggregate even where individual species are not yet considered threatened. FishBase records low fishing vulnerability (a score of 10 out of 100), consistent with a small, fast-reproducing characid, and notes high population resilience. At present there are no specific conservation measures in place for M. gracilima, and captive specimens in the hobby are likely tank-bred descendants of wild-collected stock rather than the product of any formal breeding programme.
