Taxonomy & naming
Moenkhausia grandisquamis was originally described as Tetragonopterus grandisquamis by Müller and Troschel in 1845, with the type locality given as Suriname. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the governing authority for valid names, currently places it in Moenkhausia and records the full authority as (Müller & Troschel, 1845); the parenthetical brackets indicate the species was moved from its original genus. GBIF's taxonomic backbone corroborates the valid combination.
Within Characidae, Moenkhausia is a large and ecologically varied genus of South American characins. The species epithet grandisquamis is Latin for 'large-scaled' and refers directly to the conspicuously oversized scales that set this fish apart from many of its congeners — a feature noted in the original description and still the most useful quick-field character. The broader distribution, encompassing both the Amazon and Orinoco basins as well as the Guianas, suggests a generalist that has dispersed widely across the neotropical lowlands.
Morphology
Moenkhausia grandisquamis is one of the larger members of its genus, reaching a maximum of around 4 in standard length according to FishBase. The body plan is typical of the genus: laterally compressed, moderately deep-bodied, and silvery, with a forked tail and the characteristic adipose fin of the Characidae.
The defining feature is the scale size. The scales are noticeably large relative to body depth — larger than in most congeners — giving the fish a somewhat coarser, more textured look at close range. Coloration is predominantly silver with a faint yellowish or golden tinge on the flanks in good light; a dark shoulder spot or humeral blotch is variably present. The caudal peduncle may carry a dark smudge. Sexes are not dramatically dimorphic in coloration, though ripe females are broader across the belly.
Habitat
This species occupies a broad geographic range across the Guianas and the Amazon basin of South America. FishBase records it from both rapid-flowing habitats — cascades, rocky and sandy-bottomed creeks with strong current — and calmer, slower waters, indicating considerable ecological flexibility. The species is described as a near-surface grazer and gregarious schooler, often found in open water above sandy or rocky substrates.
Reported water parameters from FishBase are pH 6.0–6.8, hardness 2–4 dH, and temperature 70–77 °F, reflecting the soft, slightly acid blackwater and clearwater conditions typical of much of the Amazon and Guiana lowlands. The preference for swift-water habitats at least part of the time places it alongside rheophilic species in gradient-rich creeks, though its occurrence in calmer waters broadens its overall footprint considerably.
Feeding
Moenkhausia grandisquamis is an omnivore that feeds primarily in the near-surface zone. FishBase characterises it as a near-surface grazer, and the genus as a whole takes small invertebrates, insects, plant material, and algae from the water column and from submerged surfaces. Its broad distribution and habitat range suggest a flexible forager that takes opportunistic prey rather than a dietary specialist.
In captivity, this species readily accepts quality flake and micropellets, as well as live and frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. A varied diet improves condition and coloration. Because it feeds primarily at and near the surface, it benefits from foods with neutral or positive buoyancy rather than fast-sinking pellets.
Mating
Like other Moenkhausia and characins generally, M. grandisquamis is an egg-scattering open spawner. Spawning behaviour has not been documented in detail in the published literature for this species specifically, but the pattern shared across the genus is well established: males pursue and court receptive females, driving them into fine-leaved vegetation or other substrate where eggs and milt are scattered without pair-bond formation.
No parental care is given by either sex. In the wild, spawning likely occurs across a broad season tied to water temperature and flood-pulse conditions in the Amazon basin, where rising water levels and seasonal flooding trigger breeding activity in many characins. In captivity, conditioning with live and frozen foods and a slight rise in temperature are the standard triggers used to prompt spawning.
Breeding
Moenkhausia grandisquamis follows the standard open-spawning characin mode: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are scattered among fine-leaved plants or over soft substrate, and both parents ignore the eggs entirely. As with congeners, the adults will consume eggs and newly hatched fry if given the chance, so breeders typically remove adults after spawning or transfer eggs to a dedicated rearing vessel.
Eggs hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures, and the tiny fry require infusoria or other very fine first foods before they can take newly hatched brine shrimp. The species is not widely bred in the hobby compared to showier Moenkhausia such as M. pittieri, and detailed captive-breeding accounts are sparse; the general Moenkhausia breeding protocol applies in the absence of species-specific data.
In the aquarium
Moenkhausia grandisquamis is classed by FishBase as harmless and of fisheries interest, and its gregarious, schooling nature makes it a suitable community fish for a spacious South American biotope or general tropical aquarium. Like most schooling characins, it should be kept in groups of at least six individuals; fewer fish produce nervous, pale animals that hide rather than display.
At up to 4 in SL it is among the larger Moenkhausia and requires a correspondingly roomy aquarium — a minimum of around 47 in in length suits a proper school of adults. Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–6.8, hardness 2–4 dH, 70–77 °F) best replicates its natural conditions, though it tolerates a modest range. Good filtration and some surface movement are beneficial, particularly given its association with flowing habitats. Compatible tankmates include similarly sized peaceful South American characins, Corydoras, and small Loricariids. Its large scales catch light well, and a group in good condition in a well-planted tank with open swimming lanes is an attractive display.
Conservation
Moenkhausia grandisquamis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with FishBase citing the assessment date as 2021-03-04. The LC status reflects the species' broad distribution across the Guianas and Amazon basin and its described abundance; FishBase characterises it as very abundant within its range.
No specific threats are recorded for the species. The Amazon and Orinoco basins face broad-scale pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and hydroelectric development, all of which affect water quality and hydrological connectivity. However, a widespread and abundant generalist is generally more resilient to such pressures than a range-restricted specialist. No targeted conservation measures are in place or apparently warranted at this time.
