Moenkhausia justae is a small characid of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, reaching around 2.5 in in standard length and belonging to the wide-ranging genus Moenkhausia — one of the most species-rich groups among the South American tetras. It is distinguished within the Moenkhausia jamesi species complex by a combination of tri- to pentacuspidate teeth on the maxilla and a humeral spot positioned between scales four and seven of the lateral line, alongside a discrete round-to-vertically-oval caudal spot. Though seldom traded by name in the hobby, it inhabits the same tropical, largely blackwater systems that characterise the genus and is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia justae was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1908. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Moenkhausia justae Eigenmann, 1908, with the holotype deposited at the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ 21014); the type locality has been cited as Rio Parahyba do Norte at João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil, though the record may also relate to material from the Manaus region. The species is placed in the family Characidae.

Phylogenetically, M. justae falls within the Moenkhausia jamesi species complex, a group of closely related taxa whose boundaries were clarified in a 2015 revision published in Zootaxa (vol. 3986). Within that complex it can be separated from congeners by the combination of a short maxilla, tri- to pentacuspidate maxillary teeth, a humeral spot lodged between scales four and seven of the lateral line, and a round or vertically oval caudal spot — characters that overlap in several relatives and require careful examination to apply confidently. The genus Moenkhausia is among the most species-rich in the Characidae, and its limits continue to be refined as molecular and morphological work progresses.

Morphology

Moenkhausia justae reaches a maximum of approximately 2.5 in standard length, placing it in the small-to-medium range for the genus. Body form is the typical deep-bodied, laterally compressed tetra profile — relatively high-backed, with a forked tail and a moderate adipose fin.

The diagnostic characters that separate M. justae from related species in the M. jamesi complex are largely meristic and dental: the maxilla is short, and the teeth it bears are notably multicuspidate, with three to five cusps (tri- to pentacuspidate). A dark humeral blotch sits between the fourth and seventh scales of the lateral line row, and the caudal peduncle carries a distinct dark spot that is approximately round or slightly taller than wide. Overall coloration is likely the silvery to pale-golden translucent tone typical of most Moenkhausia species, with the lateral region showing a longitudinal iridescent streak under good light, though detailed colour descriptions specific to M. justae are sparse in the literature.

Habitat

The species is recorded from the Amazon River basin of Brazil and, according to Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, from the Orinoco basin of Colombia as well — a broad South American lowland distribution spanning roughly 1°N to 8°S latitude. Within that range it occupies freshwater environments that are benthopelagic in character, meaning it moves through both mid-water and near-bottom zones.

Moenkhausia species in this region typically inhabit tropical streams, flooded forests, and river channels with warm, often acidic to neutral water and dense aquatic or riparian vegetation. Blackwater and clearwater tributaries of the Amazon are well represented among the habitats of congeners. Water temperatures in such systems generally range from the low to upper 20s Celsius, with pH varying from moderately acidic in tannin-stained channels to near-neutral in larger rivers.

Feeding

Like most members of the genus, Moenkhausia justae is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore in the wild, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms — along with plant matter, algal material, and surface-fallen insects. The benthopelagic tendency noted for the species suggests it forages across the water column and may also pick at bottom substrate.

In an aquarium setting, related Moenkhausia species readily accept dried foods including flake and small pellets, supplemented with frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, and similar small invertebrate items. A mixed diet supports good condition and colour. No species-specific dietary data have been published for M. justae.

Mating

Specific mating observations for Moenkhausia justae have not been documented in the published literature. Based on the reproductive pattern universal to the genus and to most characids generally, the species is almost certainly an egg-scattering open spawner. Courtship likely involves brief parallel swimming and chasing, with males pursuing females through vegetation before a close-proximity spawn.

Fine-leaved aquatic plants and submerged roots provide the microhabitat most commonly associated with spawning in comparable Moenkhausia species. There is no evidence of pair bonding, territory holding, or any extended pre-spawning behaviour beyond the immediate courtship chase typical of the subfamily.

Breeding

Moenkhausia justae has not been documented as a regular aquarium-bred species in the hobbyist literature, and detailed breeding accounts are absent from the sources examined. By analogy with well-studied congeners, spawning would be expected to follow the standard characid pattern: a pair or small group scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over a substrate of fine material, depositing a moderate clutch in a single session or over several days at temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius.

Eggs are typically small, clear to slightly opaque, and hatch within 24–48 hours at warm temperatures in related species; larvae become free-swimming a few days later and require first foods of infusoria or commercial micro-fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Adults provide no parental care and should be separated from eggs to prevent predation.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia justae is not commonly traded under its own name and is rarely encountered as a deliberate aquarium purchase; when it does appear it is likely among mixed lots of small tetras from the Amazon basin. As a Moenkhausia of modest size — to 2.5 in — it would suit a community aquarium of 20 US gal or more, kept in a group of six or more individuals to express natural schooling behaviour and reduce individual stress.

Water conditions matching its natural range are appropriate: tropical temperatures in the 73–82 °F range, pH from mildly acidic to neutral (around 6.0–7.5), and low to moderate hardness. A well-planted tank with some open swimming space, gentle filtration, and subdued or dappled lighting suits the species and its closest relatives. Tankmates should be comparably sized and peaceful — other small tetras, dwarf cichlids, corydoras catfish, and small rasboras are all compatible. Diet in captivity should include quality flake or micro-pellets plus occasional live or frozen invertebrate foods.

Conservation

Moenkhausia justae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 4 March 2021. The designation reflects a wide distribution across the Amazon basin and the absence of evidence of population-level decline significant enough to trigger a more vulnerable category.

Its broad lowland Amazonian range encompasses habitats that, while subject to ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and small-scale gold mining, still support large and relatively continuous fish assemblages across vast areas of the basin. No specific threats have been identified as targeting this species. As with all Amazonian lowland fishes, the long-term outlook depends on the integrity of the basin's freshwater systems, and sustained pressure on those ecosystems could affect even widespread species over time.
