Roeboides numerosus is a transparent, silver-flanked characin from the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela that leads a double life: by day it schools quietly in open water like an unremarkable small tetra, but at dusk it transforms into one of the freshwater world's more specialised predators, stalking larger fishes and rasping scales from their flanks with hooked, recurved teeth. That combination of near-invisibility and crepuscular lepidophagy makes it one of the more ecologically singular members of the genus Roeboides, assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern.

The genus Roeboides Günther, 1864 belongs to the subfamily Characinae within the family Characidae and groups a set of South American characins characterised by externally visible teeth and a lepidophagous feeding mode. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid binomial Roeboides numerosus Lucena, 2000.

The genus currently holds roughly fifteen recognised species distributed across the major river drainages of tropical South America, from the Amazon and Orinoco to the Río de la Plata. Roeboides numerosus is recorded from the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela. Its relationship to sympatric congeners such as Roeboides affinis and Roeboides xenodon has been examined in the context of scale-eating ecology, as several Roeboides species can co-occur and exploit the same prey base.

Morphology

Roeboides numerosus reaches a maximum standard length of approximately 2.5 in. The body is fusiform and moderately compressed, appearing nearly transparent in life, with silvery scales that can produce a glassy, almost see-through flank — a trait shared with many open-water characins and one that functions as camouflage in clear, sunlit water.

The most diagnostic feature of the genus is the dentition: the outer teeth are large, conical, and project slightly beyond the closed mouth, visible externally — an unusual condition among characins and the morphological basis for scale-eating. The jaw is subterminal and the snout somewhat pointed. Housing it with fishes significantly larger than itself reduces but does not eliminate this risk, and some hobbyists keep Roeboides species in species-only or same-genus groups.

Water conditions reflecting the Orinoco basin — warm tropical temperatures, soft to moderately hard water, near-neutral pH — suit the species well. It is an active schooling fish and benefits from open swimming space with subdued lighting or a planted perimeter to diffuse light and reduce stress. Feeding is straightforward given that Roeboides will accept meaty prepared and frozen foods such as bloodworm, small krill, and Mysis shrimp; live foods are accepted eagerly. Roeboides numerosus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 16 November 2020. The Least Concern designation reflects a wide distribution within the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela and no identified population-level threats sufficient to qualify the species for a threatened category under current IUCN criteria.

The Orinoco basin as a whole faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, artisanal and industrial mining (particularly in the Guiana Shield headwaters), and mercury contamination from gold-mining activity. These are systemic basin-wide pressures rather than threats specific to Roeboides numerosus.
