Tetragonopterus ommatus was formally described by Silva, Melo, Oliveira and Benine in 2016. It belongs to the genus Tetragonopterus Cuvier, 1816, a group of robust characids distributed across South America whose taxonomy has been substantially revised over the decades; the genus once served as a wastebasket for many unrelated characins until systematic revisions progressively narrowed its definition. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Tetragonopterus ommatus Silva, Melo, Oliveira & Benine, 2016.
Tetragonopterus is placed within the family Characidae, the core characins, though the internal phylogeny of that family remains an active area of research. The 2016 description of T. ommatus was part of a broader effort to document diversity within the genus using both morphological and molecular data. As a recently described species it lacks synonyms and has not yet attracted hobbyist common names in wide use.
