Poropuntius faucis is a diminutive cyprinid barb from the hill streams of Thailand's upper Chao Phraya basin, described by Hugh McCormick Smith in 1945 from a specimen taken in the gorge of the Mechem, a tributary of the Meping River. Reaching barely 1.5 in in standard length, it is among the smallest members of the genus Poropuntius — a group of medium-to-large barbs otherwise dominated by fish several times its size. Little studied since its original description, P. faucis occupies fast-flowing upland stream habitat in northern Thailand and remains largely absent from the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Poropuntius faucis was described by the American ichthyologist Hugh McCormick Smith in 1945 under the original combination Puntius faucis. The type specimen (holotype USNM 119497, 1.5 in SL) was collected from the gorge of the Mechem, a tributary of the Meping River in the Chao Phraya basin, northern Thailand. Smith worked extensively on Thai fishes during his tenure as a fisheries adviser to the Siamese government, and his type specimens — including this one — were deposited at the Smithsonian Institution and re-examined in subsequent decades to confirm their validity.

The species was later transferred to the genus Poropuntius, which had been established by Harold Hamilton for certain Southeast Asian barbs with a distinctly pored lateral-line scale structure. Tyson Roberts's 1998 comprehensive review of the tropical Asian cyprinid genus Poropuntius confirmed P. faucis as a valid species within that genus. The current accepted combination is Poropuntius faucis (Smith, 1945), with the parenthetical authority indicating the transfer from the original Puntius. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for this placement.

Genus Poropuntius sits within the family Cyprinidae and the broader subfamily of large-river Asian barbs. Most species in the genus are substantially larger than P. faucis; the species' modest size of around 1.5 in SL makes it unusual within the group.

Morphology

Poropuntius faucis is a small, streamlined barb, with a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in. FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic, consistent with a fish that lives near the streambed in flowing water. Beyond its small size, detailed morphological descriptions in the accessible literature are limited; the original Smith description and the Roberts 1998 genus review provide the primary structural account.

As with other members of Poropuntius, the lateral-line scales carry prominent pores — a defining feature of the genus from which the name Poropuntius (pore-barb) derives. The general body plan is that of a streamlined cyprinid suited to moderate current, typical of hill-stream barb fauna in northern Thailand.

Habitat

Poropuntius faucis is known from hill streams of the upper Chao Phraya basin in northern Thailand, specifically associated with the Meping River system. The type locality is described as a gorge — suggesting a fast-flowing, rocky or confined stream environment at elevation rather than lowland flood-plain habitat.

The upper Chao Phraya drainage in northern Thailand is characterised by clear, relatively cool streams descending from forested highland watersheds. Water in such environments tends to be soft to moderately hard, near-neutral to slightly acidic, and well-oxygenated through flow over rocks and gravel. Temperatures in upland northern Thai streams are somewhat cooler than the lowland tropics, reflecting both altitude and latitude at the northern edge of the country.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of Poropuntius faucis in the wild is available in the accessible literature. Based on its benthopelagic classification and the feeding ecology of comparable small hill-stream cyprinids, the species likely forages along the substrate and in the water column for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and organic detritus — supplemented with algae and plant material scraped or picked from submerged surfaces.

This foraging mode is consistent with the microhabitat inferred from its type locality: a stream gorge with current-swept rock and gravel surfaces that accumulate biofilm, fine organic matter, and the invertebrate communities that depend on them.

Mating

No observations of courtship behaviour in Poropuntius faucis are recorded in the available literature. As a cyprinid barb, the species is expected to follow the egg-scattering, non-guarding spawning strategy that characterises the family. In related barbs, a ready male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, the pair pressing briefly together to release eggs and milt simultaneously.

No pair bond is formed, and no territory is defended beyond the transient activity of the spawning act itself. Eggs are adhesive or semi-adhesive and settle among rocks, gravel or plant material, where neither parent takes any further interest in them. Adults of such species will consume eggs given the opportunity.

Breeding

Poropuntius faucis has not been reported in captive breeding in the accessible literature, and it is not established in the aquarium trade. On the basis of its phylogenetic position and the uniform reproductive mode of the Cyprinidae, it spawns by egg-scattering with no parental care of any kind — neither guarding eggs nor attending larvae after hatching.

Were the species to be kept and bred in captivity, the approach used for other small hill-stream barbs would apply: cool, well-oxygenated, moderately soft water with a structured substrate of fine gravel and smooth stone, removal of adults after spawning, and infusoria or similarly fine food for newly free-swimming fry. Egg-hatching time would depend on water temperature.

In the aquarium

Poropuntius faucis is not found in the mainstream aquarium trade and is essentially unknown to the hobby. Its small size — under 2 in — and shoaling nature (noted in hobbyist sources as forming schools in the wild) would in principle make it suited to a moderately sized aquarium with good flow, clear water and a rocky or gravelly substrate that reflects the hill-stream character of its native gorge habitat.

Given the scarcity of data and its absence from the trade, practical aquarium husbandry guidance is limited. The species would likely require clean, well-aerated water and would benefit from being kept in a group, as is typical of small shoaling barbs. Its cool-water hill-stream origin suggests it may not thrive at the higher end of typical tropical aquarium temperatures.

Conservation

Poropuntius faucis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2011. The evaluation noted a stable population in the Chao Phraya basin with no evidence of major range-wide decline at the time of assessment.

The upper Chao Phraya and Meping River systems in northern Thailand are subject to ongoing pressures from agricultural water extraction, sedimentation from upland deforestation, and hydroelectric infrastructure. Hill-stream specialists with restricted ranges are generally more vulnerable to such changes than widespread lowland species. Because P. faucis is restricted to the upper Chao Phraya basin and appears to favour gorge-type stream habitat, any significant degradation of fast-flowing upland streams in the Meping watershed could affect the species even if the IUCN status has not yet been updated to reflect that risk.
