Taxonomy & naming
Puntius masyai was described by Hugh M. Smith in 1945 from specimens collected in the Meinam River — now known as the Chao Phraya River — near Bangkok in central Thailand. Smith placed it in the genus Puntius, the broad catch-all into which most small Asian barbs were assigned throughout the twentieth century. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer et al., CAS), the authority for valid names, currently records the species as Puntius masyai Smith, 1945, and it has not been transferred to any of the segregate genera erected following the major revision of Asian barbs by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012).
ETYFish records that the species epithet honours Luang Masya Chitrakarn (1896–1965), a Thai ichthyologist and illustrator who served at the Siamese Bureau of Fisheries and made significant contributions to knowledge of Thailand's freshwater fishes. The name is a tribute to a scientist whose work underpins our understanding of the Chao Phraya basin's fish fauna.
Morphology
Puntius masyai is a small, slender barb. FishBase records a maximum total length of approximately 1.5 in, while the Encyclopedia of Life gives 1 in; it is among the smaller members of the residual Puntius complex retained after the 2012 revisions. Detailed morphological descriptions in the primary literature are sparse in freely available sources, but the species shares the typical barb body plan: a laterally compressed, fusiform body with a moderate arch to the back, a subterminal mouth suited to picking small prey from the substrate and the water column, and the small scales and paired fins characteristic of cyprinids in its size range.
Data on colouration and sexual dimorphism in the wild are limited in the available literature. As with many small puntid barbs, females likely become noticeably fuller-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
FishBase describes Puntius masyai as occurring in small streams and weedy lakes, inhabiting the midwater to bottom zone in shallow water. The type locality is the Chao Phraya River near Bangkok, and the species has been documented in the broader Chao Phraya watershed of central Thailand. Research on Cyprinidae in small rivers of central Thailand confirms its association with this drainage system.
The Chao Phraya basin in the lowland central plain supports warm, slow-moving to moderately flowing water in a subtropical to tropical climate. Hobby sources indicate a preferred pH in the range of 6.2–6.8, suggesting slightly acidic to mildly soft conditions consistent with lowland alluvial rivers and adjacent wetlands. Water temperatures in this region are warm year-round, broadly in the mid-twenties Celsius.
Feeding
FishBase records the diet of Puntius masyai as small crustaceans, worms and zooplankton — a profile typical of small cyprinids that forage through the water column and along soft substrates. This reflects an opportunistic feeding strategy well suited to the weedy, shallow-water habitats it occupies, where invertebrate prey is seasonally abundant.

Puntius masyai, as a member of the family Cyprinidae, is presumed to follow the standard barb reproductive mode of egg-scattering with no parental care. Eggs in small barbs of this size class typically hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days later. The species' small adult size suggests a correspondingly small clutch and small larvae requiring fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial fry foods.

Puntius masyai is essentially unknown in the mainstream aquarium hobby. No established trade name or significant hobbyist literature was found for this species. Its small size — under 1.5 in — and presumed preference for slightly acidic, warm lowland water would make it suitable for a small, planted aquarium housing other diminutive Southeast Asian species, but availability outside specialist Thai fish collectors is likely negligible.
Its dietary needs are modest, based on FishBase data — fine prepared foods alongside small live or frozen invertebrates. As with all small barbs, a shoal of several individuals would be preferable to a single specimen to express natural behaviour and reduce individual stress.
Conservation
Puntius masyai has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its known range is centred on the Chao Phraya River basin of central Thailand, a drainage that has undergone substantial alteration over the past century — urbanisation of the Bangkok metropolitan area and surrounding lowlands, agricultural intensification, modification of natural floodplain hydrology, and significant water extraction all affect habitat quality in the basin where this species was first collected.
The restricted range within a heavily human-modified watershed, combined with the absence of any conservation assessment or substantial hobby or scientific monitoring, means the species' current status is effectively unknown. Small, range-restricted barbs in lowland Southeast Asia are among the freshwater fish groups most vulnerable to incremental habitat loss, and a formal IUCN assessment would be a useful first step in evaluating any threat to this species.
