Taxonomy & naming
Bunocephalus knerii was described by the Austrian-born ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1882. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, a South American catfish family that encompasses the banjo catfishes — named for the guitar-body shape formed by a broad, depressed head tapering into a long, slender tail. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Bunocephalus as the valid genus for this group of smaller, non-armoured aspredinids.
The genus Bunocephalus, erected by Kner in 1855, holds a number of similar, morphologically conservative species distributed across South American river basins. Steindachner named the species in honour of Rudolf Kner, the Austrian zoologist who erected the genus — knerii is the Latin genitive form of Kner's surname, a common practice in descriptive ichthyology of the era. Multiple Bunocephalus species have historically been confused in the literature, and misidentifications in old collections are not uncommon; the boundaries between some species in the genus remain incompletely resolved.
Morphology
Bunocephalus knerii shares the characteristic aspredinid body plan: a broad, strongly flattened head, a compact body, and a long, thin, often tuberculate caudal peduncle that gives the silhouette the banjo outline that names the family. The skin is entirely scaleless and naked, lacking the bony armour of many other catfish groups. Colouration is a mottled, cryptic mixture of brown and grey tones — excellent camouflage against leaf litter and sandy substrate.
Three pairs of barbels are present, as is typical for catfish. Like other aspredinids, Bunocephalus bears stiff pectoral spines that can be locked erect and that tangle readily in a net; they are capable of inflicting a painful wound if mishandled. Adult size for B. knerii has not been confirmed in accessible sources; other Bunocephalus species in the genus typically reach roughly 3–6 in total length, but this range should be treated as approximate guidance only in the absence of verified data for this species.
Habitat
Bunocephalus knerii is a South American species with origins in the Amazon basin region, consistent with the wider distribution of the genus across lowland and sub-Andean rivers and their tributaries. Aspredinids in general occupy slow-moving or still stretches of rivers, streams, and flooded areas, resting motionless in dense leaf litter, on sandy or muddy substrates, or under submerged wood.
The specific rivers and localities for B. knerii are not confirmed in accessible literature. South American lowland rivers of this type are typically warm, soft to moderately soft, and circumneutral to slightly acidic, but the precise water-chemistry preferences of this species cannot be stated with confidence from available data. Pending better information, the conditions typical of soft, warm Amazonian lowland rivers serve as a reasonable starting point for care.
Feeding
Bunocephalus knerii is, like other members of the family, a nocturnal benthic forager. Aspredinids typically feed after dark on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms, and similar bottom-dwelling prey — as well as organic detritus encountered while they sift through substrate. They are micro-predators and scavengers rather than pursuit hunters.
In the aquarium, similar Bunocephalus species accept sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, Tubifex, and other small meaty foods offered after lights-out. Because daytime feeding is rarely observed, it is important to ensure food reaches the bottom and is offered at dusk or after dark so the fish is not out-competed by diurnal tankmates.
Mating
The mating behaviour of Bunocephalus knerii is undocumented in accessible literature. What is known about reproduction in Aspredinidae more broadly reveals a remarkable feature in some members of the family: females of certain aspredinid catfishes — including species in the subfamily Bunocephalinae — are known to carry fertilised eggs attached to fleshy, stalk-like structures (cotylephores) on the ventral surface, brooding them externally on the belly until they hatch.
Whether B. knerii reproduces by this mode has not been confirmed in available hobby or scientific records. If the species follows this family pattern, females would carry the egg mass on the underside of the body after spawning. Any keeper who achieves a spawn should document the behaviour carefully, as reproductive data for this species appear absent from the aquarium literature.
Breeding
Bunocephalus knerii has not been documented as bred in the aquarium hobby in accessible sources, and no reliable account of captive spawning exists in the literature examined during research. The species is rarely encountered in the trade, which further limits the body of keeper experience.

In the aquarium
Bunocephalus knerii is a sedentary, undemanding fish in terms of activity, but it has a number of care requirements that follow from its biology. As a completely scaleless catfish it is more sensitive to copper-based medications and many chemical treatments than scaled fish — dose any medication conservatively, and where possible choose copper-free treatments. This is the same med-sensitivity that applies to loaches, puffers, and all other unarmoured catfishes.
The stiff, locking pectoral spines tangle easily in a net and can jab the keeper painfully. Always move this fish in a container — never net it. In the aquarium, provide a soft substrate (sand or fine gravel), ample leaf litter or flat pieces of wood to rest under, and keep the tank peaceful and dimly lit; bright, busy tanks stress cryptic bottom-dwellers. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral, warm water (around 75–81 °F) replicating South American lowland conditions is a sensible baseline, though precise requirements for this species are unconfirmed. Feed after lights-out with sinking foods. Because trade specimens are almost certainly wild-collected, handle them carefully on import and quarantine thoroughly.
Conservation
Bunocephalus knerii has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No conservation assessment was accessible for this species. The lack of an evaluation reflects how poorly documented this catfish is — it is rarely encountered in collections or in the aquarium trade, and its range, population size, and the pressures it faces are not established in available literature.
Amazon basin catfishes face ongoing habitat pressures from deforestation, sedimentation, river modification, and in some localities overfishing. For obscure, thinly documented species like B. knerii, the absence of an IUCN assessment should not be read as confirmation that the species is secure; it simply means assessment has not been undertaken. Aquarium specimens are almost certainly wild-collected, so the trade represents a direct extraction from wild populations whose size is unknown.
