Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus flavidus was described by H. Matthes in 1962. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records it in the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae within the order Synbranchiformes. That placement defines what the fish is and, perhaps more importantly, what it is not: Mastacembelidae are spiny eels, not true eels. The true eels — the catadromous Anguilla and their relatives — belong to the order Anguilliformes, an entirely different evolutionary lineage. The eel shape of Mastacembelus flavidus is convergent, the product of a burrowing lifestyle driving a separate lineage to a similar elongate form.
The African members of Mastacembelus were for many years redistributed among satellite genera including Aethiomastacembelus and Caecomastacembelus, names that reflected regional endemic radiations within West and Central Africa. Current taxonomy folds these back into Mastacembelus, which spans both Africa and tropical Asia. M. flavidus sits within the African contingent of the genus, alongside numerous river-endemic and lake-endemic species across the Niger, Volta, Congo and Nile drainages. The epithet flavidus is Latin for yellowish or tawny, likely describing the ground colour of the preserved type specimen or live coloration noted by Matthes.
Morphology
Like other members of Mastacembelus, M. flavidus is greatly elongate — an eel-like fish compressed toward the rear, with a long body tapering to a pointed tail where the soft dorsal and anal fins merge. Along the back runs a row of short, isolated spines before the dorsal fin proper — the characteristic feature that names the spiny eels as a group. The snout is produced into a short fleshy proboscis tipped with tubular nostrils, used to probe soft sediment for food, and the down-turned mouth is adapted for benthic foraging.
The body is scaleless to the naked eye — tiny embedded scales lie beneath a heavy mucus coat — making the skin feel smooth and rendering the fish sensitive to abrasion, copper-based medications and osmotic stress. Maximum size is estimated at around 12–14 in total length, consistent with the smaller to mid-sized African Mastacembelus of West African river systems. The species epithet flavidus suggests a yellowish or tawny body colouration, though detailed colour descriptions of live material are not widely available in the published record, reflecting the species' scarcity in collections and trade alike.
Habitat
Mastacembelus flavidus is a West African freshwater endemic associated with lowland rivers, streams and seasonally flooded ground. Its range is inferred from the 1962 description to cover river drainages of the Upper Guinea and related West African systems — the general region encompassing Guinea, Sierra Leone, Mali and adjacent areas where Matthes documented West African ichthyofauna. This places it in soft to neutral, warm, low-gradient river systems typical of the West African forest-savanna zone.
Like other lowland African spiny eels, it is presumed to favour soft sandy and silty beds with leaf litter, submerged roots and bank vegetation, into which it burrows by day and emerges at dusk and night to forage. Water conditions in its native drainages are warm (approximately 75–82 °F), with soft to neutral pH, soft to moderately hard water, and seasonal variation in flow and depth linked to regional rainfall patterns. The species is scaleless and presumed intolerant of copper and prolonged osmotic stress, as is general across Mastacembelidae.
Feeding
Mastacembelus flavidus is a benthic carnivore, as expected of all spiny eels. It uses its flexible, probing snout to work through soft sediment, leaf litter and root tangles after dark, locating benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, crustaceans and other small organisms — by touch and chemosensory detection rather than by sight in low-light or turbid conditions. Small fish may also be taken opportunistically.
In captivity, where very few specimens are documented, spiny eels of this size class respond to live and frozen worm-based foods offered in the evening. Earthworms and bloodworm are generally accepted, with some individuals learning to take sinking pellets over time. Feeding during daylight or while the fish feels observed is unreliable; providing food after lights-out in a quiet tank produces far better results, consistent with the strictly nocturnal, cryptic habits of the genus.
Mating
Mastacembelus flavidus is a spiny eel and, like all Mastacembelidae, breeds by scattering adhesive eggs in fresh water — not by ocean migration, bubble-nest construction, or mouthbrooding. It is not catadromous. No direct field observations of courtship in M. flavidus are documented, but at the genus level the pattern across African and Asian spiny eels is consistent: adults are solitary and territorial outside the breeding season, and spawning is triggered by seasonal environmental cues, chiefly the onset of rainfall and the associated rise in water level, temperature fluctuation and barometric change that accompany the West African wet season.
Courtship in Mastacembelus species involves the male pursuing and entwining with the female among vegetation or roots, the pair then scattering adhesive eggs with no subsequent bond or territory formed around them. No parental care has been documented for any spiny eel, and no nest of any kind is built. Given the species' rarity in captivity, direct observation of M. flavidus mating behaviour is essentially unreported.
Breeding
Spiny eels of the genus Mastacembelus are substrate egg-scatterers that give no parental care. The spawning female and male scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, root tangles and leaf litter in fresh water; the eggs adhere to surfaces and hatch within a few days without any attendance from either parent. Larvae are small and require fine live food — infusoria-grade initially, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp — before they can feed on coarser items.
Mastacembelus flavidus is extremely rare in the aquarium trade and captive breeding records are essentially absent from the published literature. This is consistent with the broader pattern across West African endemic spiny eels: they rarely appear in hobbyist collections, and the husbandry knowledge needed to condition, pair and spawn them in captivity has not been developed. The species is not catadromous, does not form a bubble-nest, and does not exhibit mouthbrooding or any parental investment beyond the spawning act itself.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus flavidus is a West African endemic that rarely appears in the aquarium trade, and the few records that exist concern incidentally collected specimens rather than commercially farmed stock. For any keeper who does obtain one, the requirements of a Mastacembelus of this size class are well understood from congeners: a soft sand substrate deep enough to allow full burrowing, a tight-fitting and fully sealed lid (spiny eels are accomplished escape artists, can breathe briefly at the surface, and will work through any unsecured gap), and dim or dusk-timed lighting that suits a strictly nocturnal animal.
The tank should provide caves, pipes, sections of PVC or similar retreats and dense surface planting to give a sense of security; a fish left without cover will remain stressed and invisible indefinitely. Being scaleless, M. flavidus is sensitive to copper-based medications — many standard parasite treatments are toxic to it — and to sustained poor water quality. Stable, well-filtered, warm, soft to neutral water is essential. Tankmates should be peaceful and not small enough to be eaten at night; the fish is best kept singly or with mid-to-large species that occupy different parts of the water column.
Conservation
Mastacembelus flavidus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. This is unsurprising for a data-sparse West African endemic from lowland river drainages: the ichthyofauna of the Upper Guinea and adjacent systems remains incompletely surveyed, and narrow-range endemics described from limited material frequently lack the occurrence data needed for a formal assessment.
The lowland rivers of West Africa face real and increasing pressure from deforestation, artisanal and industrial gold and diamond mining (which damages river beds and elevates turbidity and sediment loads), agricultural runoff and small-scale dam construction. A species with a restricted range in such a region may well be vulnerable even if its status is formally unknown. The appropriate posture in the absence of data is caution rather than assumed security. Any specimens encountered in trade should be sourced responsibly, and their long-term captive requirements met fully given the rarity of the fish in collections.
