Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus oatesii was described by the Belgian ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1893. The type locality, recorded in the original description, is the Niger River near Timbuktu in present-day Mali. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) lists it as a valid species within Mastacembelus, the type genus of the spiny-eel family Mastacembelidae, placed in the order Synbranchiformes alongside the swamp eels.
The family Mastacembelidae spans tropical Africa and Asia, and its African members underwent a period of taxonomic fragmentation in the twentieth century, with genera such as Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus, and Afromastacembelus erected for subgroups of the African spiny eels before most were folded back into Mastacembelus. M. oatesii belongs to the West African contingent of the genus, distinct from the diverse species flock found in the East African Rift lakes.
The species is emphatically not a true eel. Its elongate, scaleless body is a convergent adaptation to a burrowing, bottom-oriented lifestyle — the same selective pressure that independently produced the similar form in the unrelated Anguilliformes. The "spiny" in spiny eel refers to the row of isolated dorsal spines that precede the soft dorsal fin, a feature absent in true eels.
Morphology
Like all members of the genus, M. oatesii has the characteristic spiny-eel body plan: greatly elongate, laterally compressed toward the tail, and superficially scaleless — the tiny embedded scales are covered by a thick layer of protective mucus. The snout is extended into a fleshy, probing proboscis tipped with tubular anterior nostrils, a sensory organ well adapted for rooting through substrate and leaf litter in search of hidden prey. A row of short, isolated dorsal spines runs along the back ahead of the soft dorsal fin, which is confluent with the anal fin and tapers to the tail.
Adult M. oatesii typically reach around 8–10 in standard length, making this a mid-sized member of the genus — larger than the smallest African spiny eels but considerably smaller than giants such as M. erythrotaenia of Southeast Asia. The ground colour is likely brown to olive-brown with patterning typical of West African riverine mastacembelids, but detailed colour descriptions in the literature are sparse. Females of ripe individuals may appear fuller-bodied than males, as in related species, but reliable sexing characters are not well documented.
Habitat
Mastacembelus oatesii is native to the Niger River basin of West Africa, with the type locality in the upper Niger near Timbuktu, Mali. The Niger at this latitude flows through the semi-arid Sahel and the inland Niger Delta — a vast seasonally flooded floodplain system that supports exceptional freshwater biodiversity. The species inhabits warm, slow to moderately flowing lowland rivers and floodplains at this part of the basin.
Water chemistry in the middle and upper Niger is broadly neutral to slightly acidic: pH roughly 6.5–7.5, with soft to moderately hard water and temperatures in the range 75–82 °F during the warm season. Like all mastacembelids, M. oatesii is a burrower and bottom-dweller, favouring soft sandy or silty substrates and sheltered areas with submerged root masses, leaf litter and emergent or riparian vegetation. It is scaleless and therefore sensitive to copper and to deteriorating water conditions.
Feeding
Mastacembelus oatesii is a nocturnal carnivore, as typical for the family. It uses its sensitive, probing snout to locate prey buried in or resting on the substrate after dark: the diet consists primarily of small insect larvae, aquatic crustaceans, worms, and other benthic invertebrates, with small fish likely taken opportunistically.
In the aquarium, meaty foods offered in the evening suit this species well — earthworms, bloodworm, other frozen and live invertebrates, and in time sinking pellets may be accepted. Newly imported fish are often reluctant to feed under bright light or in the presence of activity, so feeding after the main aquarium lights extinguish helps individuals settle and begin eating reliably.
Mating
Mastacembelus oatesii is a spiny eel (family Mastacembelidae) and, as such, is an egg-scattering spawner that gives no parental care — it is not a true eel and does not undertake a catadromous ocean-spawning migration. Breeding is thought to be triggered seasonally by rising water levels and warming temperatures associated with the West African rains, which inundate the floodplains of the Niger basin and provide conditions that stimulate spawning in many resident fish species.
Captive spawning records for this specific species are not available in the accessible literature, but the general mastacembelid pattern — a courting pair intertwining and scattering adhesive eggs among fine plants, roots, or leaf litter, with no subsequent pair bond or nest — is almost certainly the mode here. The adults pay no attention to the eggs after spawning.
Breeding
As a spiny eel (Mastacembelidae), M. oatesii reproduces by scattering adhesive eggs in fresh water, with no parental care provided to the eggs or larvae. This distinguishes it completely from the true eels (Anguillidae), which are semelparous and catadromous, migrating to the sea to spawn once and die; and from the swamp eels (Synbranchidae), in which some males guard floating mucus bubble-nests.
Breeding M. oatesii in the home aquarium has not been documented in the accessible hobbyist or scientific literature, making it one of the many West African spiny eels that remain essentially uncaptive-bred. The challenges common to the group — difficulty distinguishing sexes, the need for seasonal conditioning cues that mimic the onset of rains, and the demanding early feeding requirements of the tiny larvae — mean that the species, where traded at all, is likely supplied as wild-caught material. The facts.breeding fields reflect the family-level mode rather than direct observation.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus oatesii is a specialist aquarium subject, rarely seen in the trade and almost entirely absent from commercial stock lists. Its modest adult size of around 8–10 in makes it manageable compared to the large Asian spiny eels, but it still requires an aquarium furnished appropriately for its biology: a soft sand substrate deep enough to burrow into, subdued lighting, caves and sheltered retreats, and excellent biological filtration.
The escape hazard common to all spiny eels applies in full: these fish are muscular climbers that probe every gap in the lid and will leave even a large tank through the smallest opening and die on the floor. A tight, fully sealed cover is essential. Like all mastacembelids, M. oatesii is scaleless and exceptionally sensitive to copper-based medications and to accumulated organic waste; copper must never be used in any tank housing it, and water quality must be stable. Peaceful tankmates of a similar size are appropriate; small fish and invertebrates may be eaten at night. The species is best considered a quiet, reclusive, nocturnal carnivore rather than a display fish.
Conservation
Mastacembelus oatesii has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is the situation for a large number of narrow-range or poorly-known West African freshwater species, including many mastacembelids from the Niger basin.
The Niger River and its inland delta face escalating threats from water extraction for irrigation, dam construction, pollution from urban and agricultural runoff, and overharvesting of large riverine fish for food. The inland Niger Delta in Mali — which includes the type-locality region — is a wetland of global significance under pressure from Sahelian drought cycles, upstream damming (notably the Sélingué and Sotuba dams), and land use change. A species like M. oatesii, tied to the lowland floodplain habitat of the upper-middle Niger, could be sensitive to these pressures, but without systematic survey data and a formal assessment its conservation position remains unknown.
