Rhinogobius zhoui is a small, benthic true goby described from China in 2009 — one of dozens of stream gobies in the genus Rhinogobius that have come to light across East and South-East Asia in recent decades. Like all true gobies it carries the pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc, the character that separates family Oxudercidae from the look-alike sleepers and gudgeons, and that anchors it to the rocky bed of a fast-flowing stream. The genus sits squarely in a group that is overwhelmingly marine; the freshwater Rhinogobius are the exceptions, evolutionary colonists of cool subtropical and temperate rivers and brooks that have discarded any need for a marine larval phase entirely. R. zhoui is a resident freshwater spawner: pairs breed in caves or crevices in fresh water, the male guards the clutch, and no marine dispersal stage is involved — a trait that, in principle, makes it captive-breedable, unlike the amphidromous cling-gobies of nearby river mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhinogobius zhoui was described by Li and Zhong in 2009; the specific epithet honours a person named Zhou, following the common Chinese taxonomic tradition of commemorating a colleague or mentor in a new species name. The Catalog of Fishes places the genus in the family Oxudercidae — the reshaped classification that now encompasses the bulk of what was formerly Gobiidae, following large-scale molecular revisions of the gobioid fishes. Older literature and some databases still place Rhinogobius in Gobiidae sensu lato, so both family-level references may appear in pre-2016 sources.

The genus Rhinogobius itself was established by Gill in 1859 and contains well over a hundred described species, with new taxa still being published each year from China, Japan, Vietnam and surrounding countries. Many early species were described under Gobius or other broadly applied goby genera; all such combinations should be treated as synonyms. R. zhoui is a recently described species and has attracted little published work beyond the original description; data are sparse for many members of this genus.

The key systematic character that unites all Rhinogobius within the true gobies is the pelvic girdle: the left and right pelvic fins are united into a single cup-shaped sucker disc along the belly, used to grip the substrate in fast water. Sleeper gobies (Eleotridae) and gudgeons lack this disc — their pelvic fins remain separate — and the distinction is immediately visible by looking at the underside of the fish.

Morphology

Rhinogobius zhoui is a small, slender-bodied goby typical of the genus, reaching roughly 1–2 in in standard length as an adult; precise maximum size is not well documented for this species, and the genus-wide range of 1–3 in SL provides the best available bracket. The body is somewhat cylindrical anteriorly and compressed toward the caudal peduncle, adapted to life on rocky and gravelly stream beds. The head is broad and slightly flattened, with a wide mouth directed slightly upward — suited to ambush-feeding on bottom-dwelling invertebrates.

Coloration in Rhinogobius is notoriously variable and is in fact one of the main tools used to distinguish species in the field. Males typically show brighter and more contrasting markings than females, often with orange, red or yellow pigment on the face and fins. Sexual dimorphism is common across the genus: males are larger-bodied and more vividly coloured, and develop pointed or elongated dorsal and anal fins relative to the rounder-finned females. The diagnostic sucker disc is formed by the fused pelvic fins and is visible on the ventral surface; it serves as an anchor on fast-flowing rocky substrate.

Data specific to R. zhoui's coloration and precise morphometrics are sparse in accessible literature; the morphological notes here reflect the well-documented genus pattern.

Habitat

Rhinogobius zhoui is native to China, where it was described from its type locality in Chinese inland waters. Like the overwhelming majority of its genus it is a benthic inhabitant of clear, fast-flowing freshwater streams and rivers with rocky, gravelly or sandy substrates. These are well-oxygenated, cool to warm-temperate waters — the kind of upland or foothill stream that runs over stone rather than mud, with strong current, high dissolved oxygen and good visibility.

Temperate and subtropical Rhinogobius species characteristically favour water temperatures in the range of approximately 59–72 °F; many require a cooler period in winter and do not thrive in the continuously warm tropical conditions sometimes assumed for Asian fish. The exact thermal requirements of R. zhoui are not formally documented, but the temperate Chinese stream context is consistent with this cooler preference. The species is a strictly freshwater resident — it is not amphidromous and does not require brackish or marine conditions at any life stage.

Feeding

Rhinogobius zhoui is a micro-predator, as is characteristic of the genus. In the wild, stream gobies of this type feed on small aquatic invertebrates taken from the substrate: chironomid larvae (bloodworm), copepods, small crustaceans, amphipods and other benthos that live in and on the gravel and rock surfaces of the stream bed. They are visual hunters that rely on the movement of prey items to trigger a strike.

In the aquarium, R. zhoui and its close relatives typically refuse dry flake food or accept it very poorly. A diet of small live and frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, white mosquito larvae, daphnia, cyclops, brine shrimp and similar items — is essential for good condition and colour. Being honest about this is a key care point: a fish kept on flake alone will fade, lose condition and decline. Variety in the invertebrate menu and regular live food are strongly recommended, especially when conditioning a pair for breeding.

Mating

Rhinogobius zhoui is a resident freshwater cave-spawner, following the reproductive strategy typical of the genus. Males are territorial and will establish and defend a cave, crevice, hollow stone or length of pipe as a spawning site. Courtship involves the male displaying intensified colour and extended fins at the cave entrance, inviting a ripe female to inspect the site. The male's larger size and brighter coloration make the sexes straightforward to distinguish when fish are in condition.

Unlike the amphidromous stream gobies — Stiphodon, Sicyopterus and their allies — that breed in fresh water but whose larvae must develop in the sea, Rhinogobius species complete their entire life cycle in fresh water. There is no marine dispersal phase. This makes the mating system fully accessible in a home aquarium: a conditioned pair will court and spawn without any alteration of salinity, and success depends on water quality, temperature and the provision of suitable caves rather than on any replication of an estuarine or marine environment.

Breeding

Spawning follows the cave-spawner model documented across the Rhinogobius genus: the female enters the chosen cave and deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the ceiling or walls, then leaves. The male assumes sole parental responsibility from that point, remaining in and near the cave to guard the clutch and fanning the eggs continuously with his fins to keep them oxygenated and free of fungus. Incubation typically lasts two to three weeks at temperate stream temperatures (approximately 64–68 °F), somewhat faster if kept warmer, though high temperatures outside the natural range should be avoided.

The newly hatched fry are small and free-swimming within fresh water, requiring micro-foods such as infusoria or cultured rotifers as first foods, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and micro-worm as they grow. Because the full breeding cycle takes place in fresh water and the male's guarding behaviour can be observed and supported, R. zhoui is captive-breedable in a species tank equipped with suitable caves and maintained at appropriate cool-to-temperate temperatures. As with most small stream gobies, a separate rearing vessel for the fry will improve survival rates.

In the aquarium

Rhinogobius zhoui is a specialist fish rather than a community-tank generalist, and matching the conditions of a cool Chinese stream is the foundation of good care. A modest aquarium of 23.5–31.5 in with a sand and gravel substrate, smooth stones for sheltering under and caves or small ceramic tubes for spawning is ideal. Filtration should maintain strong, well-oxygenated current — a powerhead or spray-bar return mimicking the flow of a hill stream is beneficial. Temperature should be held in the temperate range (roughly 61–72 °F) rather than the tropical mid-twenties often assumed for Asian fish; a summer peak above 75 °F risks stress, and a cooler winter period may support natural breeding cycles.

The tank should be covered: stream gobies are capable jumpers and will exploit any gap. Males are territorial with one another and will clash over caves, so a species or small-group setup benefits from multiple caves spread across the tank to break line of sight. Water quality should be excellent — these fish come from clean, fast, unpolluted streams and do not tolerate neglect. Diet must centre on small live and frozen invertebrates (bloodworm, daphnia, cyclops, brine shrimp); dry food alone is not adequate. No added salt is needed or desirable for this strictly freshwater species.

Conservation

Rhinogobius zhoui has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE). It is a recently described species with a range restricted to China, and like most small-stream gobies of limited distribution it is poorly represented in global biodiversity databases. The absence of an IUCN assessment should not be read as confirmation of security: many Rhinogobius species are narrow endemics of individual river systems or drainages, and the freshwater biodiversity of southern and central China faces documented pressures from dam construction, water extraction, agricultural runoff, urbanisation and pollution.

The species is rarely if ever encountered in the mainstream aquarium trade, and it is not subject to commercial collection pressure at a meaningful scale. The primary conservation considerations are therefore habitat-based rather than trade-driven. Formalising an IUCN assessment and mapping the distributional limits of the species against known threat layers in its Chinese stream habitat would be useful first steps. In the meantime the appropriate precaution is to avoid wild collection and to keep any aquarium population of this species entirely captive-bred.
