Taxonomy & naming
Nemacheilus longipectoralis was described by Cornelia Maria Louise Popta in 1905, in the genus Nemacheilus, from material collected in East Kalimantan (Kalimantan Timur), on the Indonesian portion of Borneo. It remains placed in Nemacheilus, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone and brook loaches — which is by far the largest and most species-rich family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, with well over 700 described species spread across South, Southeast and East Asia.
The genus Nemacheilus has a complicated taxonomic history: it was long used as a broad catch-all for hillstream loaches across Asia before later revisions split much of that diversity into separate genera such as Schistura, Barbatula and Triplophysa. Species named Nemacheilus longipectoralis should not be confused with the unrelated Protonemacheilus longipectoralis, a monotypic genus described from Yunnan, China in 1990 that happens to share the same species epithet — the two are separate species from separate parts of Asia, linked only by a coincidence of naming rather than by close kinship.
Morphology
As a member of the Nemacheilidae, Nemacheilus longipectoralis has the classic stone-loach build: an elongate, cylindrical body, a flattened underside suited to hugging the streambed, and a small, downward-facing mouth ringed with barbels for probing the substrate. The feature that gives the species its name is its long pectoral fins — Popta's original description singled these out as distinctive relative to other Bornean stone loaches known at the time.
Like most nemacheilids it is a scaleless or near-scaleless fish, or carries only minute, deeply embedded scales, leaving the skin thin and exposed compared with more heavily armoured loach families. This makes the family, and presumably this species, sensitive to poor water quality and heavy-handed medication. Detailed measurements, colour pattern and meristic counts beyond the original description are not well documented in the available literature, and no verified maximum length figure could be confirmed for this species specifically — a genuine data gap rather than an oversight.
Habitat
The species is known from East Kalimantan, on the Indonesian side of the island of Borneo, where the type material was collected. Borneo's interior rivers are typically fast-flowing, well-oxygenated and often clear to lightly tea-stained, draining rainforest terrain over sand, gravel and rock — the kind of stream habitat that stone loaches across the family favour, since Nemacheilidae as a whole are overwhelmingly fish of flowing, oxygen-rich water rather than still ponds or lakes.
Beyond the type locality, published, verifiable habitat data specific to Nemacheilus longipectoralis are sparse. Rather than assign speculative figures, it is more honest to note that the genus generally occupies cool-to-warm, clear, fast-flowing streams, and that this species should be assumed to follow that pattern until better field data are published.
Feeding
No diet-specific study of Nemacheilus longipectoralis appears in the available literature. Stone and brook loaches as a group, however, are consistent in their habits: they are benthic micro-predators that work the stream bottom for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and worms — picked out from gravel and sediment with the barbelled, downturned mouth.
In an aquarium setting, fish of this genus generally do well on small live and frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped invertebrates) offered at the substrate, and often show little interest in flake left to float. Given the lack of species-specific feeding data, this genus-level pattern is the safest working guide rather than a confirmed account of this particular species.
Mating
No description of courtship, spawning triggers or sexual dimorphism has been published for Nemacheilus longipectoralis. Across the stone and brook loaches generally, breeding is not well studied for the great majority of species, and there is no evidence of any parental-care behaviour, pairing display, or nest-building in this group — they are egg-scatterers by family-wide pattern, not substrate guarders or mouthbrooders.
In the absence of any direct observation for this species, the honest position is that its mating behaviour is undocumented, and any detailed account would be invention rather than fact.
Breeding
There is no record of Nemacheilus longipectoralis being bred in the aquarium, and stone and brook loaches as a family are rarely bred by hobbyists at all. Where reproduction has been documented in related Nemacheilidae, the pattern is a simple egg-scatterer: ripe adults release eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no nest, no guarding and no further parental care once the eggs are laid.
Given the complete absence of species-specific breeding records, the most accurate statement is that this species has not been reported to spawn in captivity, and any keeper attempting it would be working from genus-level inference rather than an established protocol.
In the aquarium
Nemacheilus longipectoralis is not established in the aquarium trade, and there are no verified reports of it being kept or offered for sale — this account should not be read as a care guide drawn from hobbyist experience, since none appears to exist for this species. What can be said comes from its placement within the genus and family: Nemacheilus species in general are active, fast-water fish that need cool-to-warm, clean, strongly oxygenated water with good current, a hard substrate of sand, gravel and smooth stone, and a mature biofilm surface for grazing and foraging.
As with nearly all stone and brook loaches, the near-scaleless skin of the family means any related species should be treated cautiously with medications — copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many standard remedies are best avoided or halved. A keeper who did source this fish should replicate a flowing, well-oxygenated stream tank rather than a warm, still community setup, and should not expect to breed it.
Conservation
Nemacheilus longipectoralis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so no conservation category can be reported here; it is recorded as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. Attempts to locate a Red List assessment for this species returned no confirmed listing.
As a narrow-range Bornean endemic known from limited historical collection, it sits in the same position as many of Borneo's interior stream fishes: potentially exposed to the island's ongoing pressures from logging, land conversion and mining-related sedimentation, but without a formal population assessment to confirm or quantify any decline. Absent that assessment, the responsible statement is that its conservation status is simply unknown, not that it is safe or threatened.
