Taxonomy & naming
Nemacheilus saravacensis was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1894, with the type locality given as Senah in Sarawak, on the island of Borneo. The species epithet saravacensis is simply a Latinised form of "Sarawak," the Malaysian state where it was first collected, and the common name Sarawak loach follows directly from that.
The genus Nemacheilus sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by species count the largest family of loaches, and one that has been repeatedly reshuffled as ichthyologists split the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus into narrower groups such as Schistura, Barbatula and Triplophysa. Some related Bornean species have historically been shuffled under the alternate spelling Noemacheilus in older literature, but N. saravacensis is retained in Nemacheilus proper. As with many small, single-stream Southeast Asian loaches, its position could shift again as regional revisions continue; for now the Catalog of Fishes treats it as a valid Nemacheilus.
Morphology
This is a small, slender stone loach, reported at roughly 1.5–2 in standard length — modest even by the standards of the family. Like other nemacheilids it has an elongated, only lightly compressed body suited to holding position against current, a blunt snout with barbels for probing the substrate, and the near-scaleless, delicate skin typical of the group. Detailed colour-pattern and fin-count data for this particular species are not well documented in accessible literature, which is typical of small-range Bornean stream loaches that see little scientific or hobby attention.
Where the cached sources are silent on fine anatomical detail — for instance any suborbital-spine condition specific to this species — it is safest to note that data is sparse rather than assume the botiid condition; Nemacheilidae as a family lacks the erectile suborbital spine that defines the botiid loaches, so no spine should be implied here.
Habitat
Nemacheilus saravacensis is a Borneo endemic, recorded from Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo) and adjacent West Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo). It lives in clear, tea-coloured forest streams with dense marginal and overhanging vegetation, over a substrate of sand, small rocks and pebbles, with leaf litter, roots and fallen branches providing cover and organic structure.
Water conditions in these streams run relatively cool to moderate for the tropics, soft and acidic to circumneutral, with visible tannin staining from decaying leaf litter. This is fast, clean, well-oxygenated running water — not a still, heavily blackwater habitat — and the species' biology is built around holding station in that current rather than cruising open, sluggish water.
Feeding
The Sarawak loach is an omnivorous micro-predator, foraging over the streambed for small insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and zooplankton, along with some incidental plant and detrital material. This diet reflects the productivity of shaded, leaf-litter-fed forest streams rather than open, algae-rich water.
In the rare cases it is kept, it takes live and frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp readily and generally prefers these over dry flake or pellet, in keeping with its role as a small invertebrate hunter on the stream bottom.
Mating
No reliable information on sexual dimorphism, courtship or spawning behaviour for Nemacheilus saravacensis is available from the sources consulted — a common gap for small, single-locality Southeast Asian stream loaches that receive little scientific study outside their original description. Nothing should be assumed here beyond what is typical of the family: nemacheilid stone loaches spawn as egg-scatterers, without pairing behaviour or nest-building, but specifics for this species are simply not documented.
Breeding
As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, Nemacheilus saravacensis is not known to be bred in the home aquarium. Where breeding has been recorded for Nemacheilidae in general, it follows an egg-scattering pattern over gravel and stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care given afterward. There is no record of captive spawning for this species specifically, and given how rarely it appears in the trade at all, that is unsurprising — this is a fish that is essentially never bred by hobbyists, and data on its reproduction is sparse.
In the aquarium
The Sarawak loach is seen in the hobby only rarely, if at all, typically turning up as incidental bycatch alongside other small Bornean stream fish rather than as a deliberately traded species. Anyone who does encounter it should replicate its home stream as closely as possible: cool-to-moderate, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water with a sand-and-fine-gravel substrate, driftwood, leaf litter and dense planting or cover to mimic the shaded forest margin, plus strong water movement — sources recommend roughly four to five times the tank volume in turnover per hour.
Like other soft-skinned, effectively scaleless loaches, it should be assumed sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, warranting caution and reduced dosing if treatment is ever needed. It is a social micro-predator best kept in a group of four or more rather than alone, and it is intolerant of organic waste buildup, so consistent water changes — on the order of 30–50% weekly — and immaculate water quality matter more for this species than for most easier stream fish.
Conservation
Nemacheilus saravacensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so no conservation category applies here beyond Not Evaluated. Small-range Bornean stream endemics like this one are broadly under-assessed, and the species' true population status and trend are not documented in the sources available.
As a fish restricted to specific forest streams in Sarawak and West Kalimantan, its principal long-term risk is the same one facing much of Borneo's freshwater fauna: deforestation, land conversion and the resulting siltation and disruption of clear, fast-flowing headwater streams. There is no evidence the aquarium trade places meaningful pressure on this species, given how seldom it is collected or sold.
