Leporinus unitaeniatus is a small, little-known headstander from the river systems of central-northern Brazil, formally described only in 2009 despite belonging to a genus long familiar to aquarists. Like its relatives it grazes in the distinctive oblique, head-down posture that gives the group its common name, picking algae and biofilm from wood and stone rather than chasing down other fish. It is a modest-sized species by Leporinus standards — barely 4.5–5 in — but it carries the same family reputation worth knowing before it goes in a community tank: many Leporinus and Anostomus species are nippy, territorial grazers that will sample fins and soft plants as readily as algae, and this species should be assumed to share that temperament until proven otherwise. Data on it remain genuinely sparse, and this article says so plainly wherever the record runs out.

Taxonomy & naming

Leporinus unitaeniatus was described by Garavello and Santos in 2009, making it one of the more recently named members of a genus that has been recognised by aquarists and ichthyologists alike since the nineteenth century. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a Neotropical characin lineage distinguished by an oblique, head-down feeding posture used to graze algae and biofilm from submerged surfaces.

The genus Leporinus is large and taxonomically active, with species distinguished by fine details of colour pattern, scale counts and dentition; a DNA barcode study covering this species (published via PubMed Central) confirms it as a distinct lineage within the genus, with a dental formula of 4/4 and 40–44 lateral-line scales. The specific epithet unitaeniatus is Latin for "single-banded," referring to the single conspicuous black lateral streak that runs the length of the body — the species' most obvious field mark alongside its transversal barring (see Morphology).

Morphology

Leporinus unitaeniatus is a small, elongated, fusiform-bodied headstander with a comparatively low body profile for the genus — its depth runs to roughly 23% of standard length, giving it a slimmer, more torpedo-like build than some of the deeper-bodied Leporinus kept in the hobby. FishBase and a DNA barcode study both record a maximum size of around 4.5–5 in standard length, making this one of the smaller described species in the genus.

Colouration is distinctive: the body is yellowish overall, marked with a single conspicuous black lateral streak running along the flank — the feature the species is named for — crossed by 11 to 13 dark chestnut transversal stripes. Fin ray counts recorded from FishBase include 10–11 dorsal soft rays and 9 anal soft rays. As in other Leporinus, the mouth and dentition are adapted for grazing rather than predation, with small, close-set teeth suited to scraping algae and biofilm rather than seizing prey.

Habitat

Leporinus unitaeniatus is known from river systems of central-northern Brazil, with FishBase records placing it in the Araguaia and Tocantins rivers and a DNA barcode study broadening that to hydrographic basins spanning the Brazilian states of Maranhão, Piauí and Tocantins. These are large, seasonally dynamic river systems typical of the Neotropical lowlands, though detailed habitat description — channel type, substrate, vegetation, seasonal movement — is not available in the sources consulted for this species specifically.

Water chemistry and temperature data specific to L. unitaeniatus were not accessible in the sources reviewed. Other Anostomidae from the same general region — the Araguaia basin, alongside the Orinoco, Amazon and Machado rivers — are documented (via a related species, Anostomus ternetzi) at roughly 72–82 °F and pH 6.0–7.5, a warm, mildly acidic to neutral range broadly typical of Neotropical river characins.
