Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus venerei was formally described by Heraldo A. Britski and José L. O. Birindelli in 2008, placing it in the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes. The genus Leporinus is one of the largest and most taxonomically active in the family, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) remains the reference for its accepted species boundaries; this account follows that placement and keeps the species in Leporinus rather than proposing any reassignment.
A subsequent DNA-barcoding survey extended the species' documented range beyond the original Araguaia basin material, confirming specimens from the Itapecuru, Mearim, Turiaçu, Preguiças and Periá river basins in Maranhão State and from the Tocantins River basin. The same study notes L. venerei is morphologically similar to L. lacustris, a larger species reaching roughly 8 in SL, and separates the two chiefly on dental formula (4/3 premaxillary/dentary teeth), body depth, and a diagnostic pattern of three small dark spots along the lateral line together with a long, dark anal fin.
Morphology
Leporinus venerei is a modestly sized, deep-bodied headstander with a terminal mouth set for grazing rather than seizing prey, and a dental formula of 4 premaxillary to 3 dentary teeth. Diagnostic features include a tall body profile, an elongated anal fin that runs notably dark, and three small dark spots strung along the lateral line — a pattern used to separate it from the similar, larger L. lacustris.
FishBase records a maximum size of 5.5 in standard length for the species, distinctly smaller than several of the large, well-known aquarium Leporinus. No maturity-size data are documented in the sources reviewed here, so size at first breeding is not stated with confidence.
Habitat
The species is native to lowland river drainages of northern and northeastern Brazil. It was first described from the Araguaia River basin and has since been confirmed across a cluster of Maranhão State rivers — the Itapecuru, Mearim, Turiaçu, Preguiças and Periá — as well as in the Tocantins River basin, indicating a range across multiple, partly independent coastal and interior drainages rather than a single river system.
FishBase classifies it as a tropical freshwater species; no specific temperature or pH range is documented in the sources reviewed here, so keepers should treat typical warm, soft-to-neutral Brazilian lowland river conditions as a reasonable starting point rather than a confirmed figure, and avoid assuming extreme blackwater parameters without direct evidence.
Feeding
Leporinus venerei is described as a periphyton grazer, consistent with the broader genus: it feeds by scraping algae and biofilm from submerged wood, rock and plant surfaces while holding its characteristic head-down, oblique posture. Leporinus as a genus are generally omnivorous but weighted toward plant matter — algae, soft leaves, fallen fruit — supplemented with worms, insects and crustaceans picked up while grazing.
In the aquarium, this grazing habit means a vegetable-forward diet matters: algae wafers, blanched vegetables, spirulina-based foods and other plant-heavy fare should form the bulk of the diet, with occasional protein such as small invertebrates or quality flake/pellet food rounding it out. Soft-leaved aquarium plants are at real risk of being grazed or shredded by fish in this genus.
Mating
The DNA-barcode confirmation study notes that pairs of L. venerei have been observed breeding on densely vegetated areas in the wild, but no detail on courtship behaviour, colour change or external sexing is documented in the sources reviewed here. No aquarium spawning accounts specific to this species were found, so courtship in captivity remains undescribed.
Breeding
Leporinus venerei has not been documented as bred in home aquaria in the sources reviewed here. What is known comes from the wild: pairs have been observed spawning over densely vegetated substrate, consistent with the genus-wide pattern for Leporinus and Anostomus as egg-scattering headstanders with no parental care of eggs or fry. Some Leporinus species are farmed commercially for food or stocking purposes, but that is a different context from hobby aquarium breeding, and no such account exists for this species specifically.
Keepers should treat this as a species that is very unlikely to spawn in a home tank, and should not expect or attempt to force breeding behaviour that has no supporting record.
In the aquarium
At a documented maximum of 5.5 in SL, Leporinus venerei is on the smaller side for the genus, but it should still be given a tank sized for an active, grazing characin with room to swim and graze along hardscape — driftwood and rockwork encourage the natural head-down foraging behaviour and give it something to work on besides plants. A secure, well-fitting lid is standard practice for Leporinus, as members of the genus are capable jumpers.
General Leporinus behaviour reported for the genus is semi-aggressive and territorial once mature, with a real tendency toward fin-nipping in some species; no behavioural account specific to L. venerei was found in the sources reviewed here, so keepers should plan for that possibility rather than assume this particular species is an exception. Tankmates should be chosen accordingly — robust, fast-moving fish rather than long-finned or slow companions — and soft-leaved plants should be considered at risk from grazing.
Conservation

As with many characins across this broad Brazilian range, general pressures on Neotropical freshwater systems — damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation and water-quality change — are relevant long-term watch items for the region as a whole, even though the species itself is not currently classified as threatened.
