Leporinus reinhardti is a banded headstander from the São Francisco River basin of eastern Brazil, a river-specific member of the large Leporinus-type radiation that grazes algae and biofilm off rocks and wood while hanging in its family's trademark oblique, head-down posture. It is a solid, fusiform fish rather than a giant — FishBase records a maximum of 11 in standard length — but like many of its relatives it has a reputation among aquarists as a boisterous, sometimes nippy tankmate that outgrows a modest community tank. This account keeps to what is actually documented for the species: a real adult size, a migratory life history in its native river, and a diet built around grazing rather than predation.

Taxonomy & naming

Leporinus reinhardti was described by the Danish zoologist Christian Frederik Lütken in 1875, part of a wave of nineteenth-century descriptions of Neotropical characins built on collections sent back to European museums. It sits in the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes — a family named for the anos- (mouth) orientation and habit shared by many of its genera of feeding at an oblique, head-down angle against rock and wood surfaces.

Recent revisions of the historically enormous genus Leporinus have split off a number of larger-bodied, deeper-jawed species — including this one — into the resurrected genus Megaleporinus, and FishBase and other current authorities list the species as Megaleporinus reinhardti. Older literature, hobby sources and much of the aquarium trade still use the original combination, Leporinus reinhardti, and that is the name used throughout this article. Whichever combination is used, the valid authorship remains Lütken, 1875, and the species is endemic to the São Francisco River basin in Brazil.

The genus name Leporinus derives from the Latin lepus (hare), an old allusion to the split, hare-like upper lip shared by many species in the group; the species epithet reinhardti honours the Danish zoologist Johannes Theodor Reinhardt (1816–1882), director of the National Natural History Museum in Copenhagen, who collected and studied Brazilian fishes.

Morphology

Leporinus reinhardti has the elongated, cylindrical-to-fusiform body typical of the genus, with a blunt, rounded snout, a small subterminal-to-terminal mouth carrying rows of slightly notched teeth suited to scraping rather than seizing prey, and a deeply forked tail. FishBase documents a maximum recorded size of 11 in standard length and roughly 450 g in weight — a solidly built, medium-sized characin rather than one of the genus's smaller nano-scale species.

Scale counts from FishBase place the species with a handful of predorsal scales and around fourteen scales around the caudal peduncle, consistent with the broader Anostomidae body plan. As in most headstanders, colouration typically follows a banded or blotched pattern along the flanks that helps break up the fish's outline against rock and driftwood, though detailed live colouration notes are sparse in the available sources and are best confirmed against current photographs before purchase.

Habitat

The species is native to the São Francisco River basin in eastern Brazil, one of South America's major river systems and one with a comparatively high level of fish endemism due to its long isolation from the Amazon and Paraná drainages. Within that basin, Leporinus reinhardti has been documented as a migratory fish, consistent with the broader pattern in Anostomidae and many other Neotropical characiforms of undertaking upstream spawning runs tied to the rainy season and rising water levels.

As with other members of the genus, it should be regarded as a potential fin-nipper: many Leporinus and Anostomus species are boisterous, territorial as they mature, and capable of harassing slower-moving or long-finned tankmates, so stocking choices should favour robust, similarly fast fish over delicate community species.

The grazing habit that makes this species useful against algae also makes it a threat to soft-leaved aquarium plants, which it will readily strip if not offered enough vegetable matter in its diet. A tight-fitting lid is worth having, since strong-swimming characins of this build are capable jumpers. Given the sparse aquarium-specific literature on this particular species, keepers should treat general Leporinus/Megaleporinus husbandry guidance as the starting point and adjust to the individual fish's behaviour.

Conservation

Leporinus reinhardti has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so its formal conservation status is Not Evaluated. This is common among river-restricted Neotropical characins that are neither major food-fish species nor heavily represented in the aquarium trade, and it does not by itself imply the species is secure or in decline.

As a São Francisco basin endemic, the species' fortunes are tied to that river's health, and the basin has faced substantial pressure from damming, water abstraction for irrigation, and habitat modification over recent decades — general threats affecting the basin's notably endemic fish fauna. In the absence of a species-specific assessment, these basin-wide pressures are the most relevant watch items for this fish.
