Hypostomus uruguayensis is a large suckermouth catfish distributed broadly across the Uruguay River basin and parts of the middle and lower Paraná system in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. A temperate-adapted species by loricariid standards, it is known to supplement its detritivorous diet with the invasive golden mussel Limnoperna fortunei — an unusual feeding behaviour that may render it a modest natural control on one of South America's most damaging aquatic invaders.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus uruguayensis was described by Roberto Reis, Claude Weber, and Luiz Roberto Malabarba in 1990, with the original publication appearing in the Revue Suisse de Zoologie, volume 97, number 3, page 760. The type locality is the Rio Uruguay at 'Rancho da Amizade,' near the town of São Borja, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. No synonyms are listed for the species in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), which treats Hypostomus uruguayensis as a valid name. The taxonomic status was validated against Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (2020 version) in the IUCN assessment with no synonymizations published in the preceding five years.

The species belongs to the large and taxonomically complex genus Hypostomus Lacepède, 1803 — the nominal genus of subfamily Hypostominae within Loricariidae, encompassing a substantial fraction of all loricariid diversity. The La Plata basin, which includes both the Uruguay and Paraná river systems, supports several Hypostomus species, and the region has been the subject of ongoing taxonomic work. The molecular phylogenetics of H. uruguayensis within the broader Hypostomus complex have been addressed in work by Montoya-Burgos and Weber (EMBL/GenBank accession AJ318377), though a comprehensive revision of the La Plata Hypostomus fauna remains incomplete.

The species is known by the common name Vieja (Spanish, meaning 'old woman' — a widespread vernacular applied to suckermouth catfishes across the La Plata basin) and Cascudo (Portuguese, a similarly broad regional term for armoured catfishes).

Morphology

Hypostomus uruguayensis is a large species, reaching a maximum recorded total length of 13.5 in and a maximum published weight of 350 g (FishBase, Ref. 79585). PlanetCatfish records 10 in SL for the species, indicating that the FishBase figure is given as total length rather than standard length — the IUCN assessment (citing Froese & Pauly 2019 / FishBase) notes this distinction.

The body follows the typical Hypostominae plan: strongly dorsoventrally flattened, with overlapping bony scutes forming a continuous armour across the head and trunk. The mouth is ventral and suctorial, equipped for rasping hard substrates. The caudal fin is emarginate to forked. Detailed descriptions of colouration are not available in the literature sources consulted; La Plata basin Hypostomus are generally brown to olive with variable dark spotting or reticulation, though population-level variation in this widespread species has not been systematically characterised.

Sexual dimorphism has not been formally described for H. uruguayensis. In the genus more broadly, reproductive males typically develop elongated interopercular odontodes and broader heads relative to females; gravid females show a notably wider body profile when viewed from above.

Habitat

Hypostomus uruguayensis occupies permanent rivers and streams across a substantial portion of the La Plata drainage system. Its confirmed range includes the Uruguay River basin across Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina), Argentina (Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Santa Fé, Misiones), Paraguay, and Uruguay, as well as the middle and lower Paraná River system in Argentina and Paraguay (IUCN, 2020).

The species' estimated extent of occurrence is 461,383 mi², making it one of the more widely distributed Hypostomus species in southern South America. This broad range encompasses a variety of fluvial environments — from faster-flowing rocky reaches of the upper Uruguay tributaries to the slower, turbid lowland sections of the lower Paraná and its floodplain lakes. The species inhabits freshwater wetlands and inland waters generally characterised as temperate to subtropical; no specific depth, temperature, or chemistry data are provided by the sources available, though the latitude of its range (roughly 22°S to 35°S) implies tolerance of cooler winters relative to most Amazonian loricariids.

Like all Hypostomus, the species is capable of facultative air-breathing (FishBase, Ref. 126274), which facilitates survival in hypoxic conditions during seasonal drought or in lentic floodplain habitats.

Feeding

Hypostomus uruguayensis is detritivorous in the primary sense, ingesting fine organic matter, algae, and associated microorganisms from benthic substrates. However, the IUCN assessment (2020) records a notable dietary supplement: Garcia and Protogino (2005) documented the species feeding on Limnoperna fortunei, the golden mussel, an invasive bivalve from Southeast Asia that has established across the La Plata system since the early 1990s and caused significant economic and ecological damage.

The ability to consume invasive mussels is unusual among suckermouth catfishes and may reflect the species' opportunistic use of abundant novel prey in a system heavily modified by the golden mussel invasion. Whether this represents a significant population-level impact on Limnoperna fortunei, or a minor dietary supplement for H. uruguayensis, is not established in the available literature. In the aquarium, detritivorous loricariids are typically maintained on algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and sinking herbivore pellets.

Mating

No specific observations of courtship behaviour are documented for Hypostomus uruguayensis in the scientific or hobby literature. Based on the general biology of the genus, males are expected to become territorial around suitable cavity sites — undercut riverbanks, submerged hollow logs, rock crevices — and to develop elongated interopercular odontodes during the reproductive season.

The temperate character of the Uruguay River basin, with marked seasonal temperature variation between summer and winter, likely drives a defined breeding season — probably spring to early summer in the Southern Hemisphere (October to December) when water temperatures rise and river productivity increases. No breeding reports appear in the hobbyist literature for this species.

Breeding

No aquarium breeding records are reported for Hypostomus uruguayensis in the sources consulted. PlanetCatfish records no breeding reports for the species. Genus-level reproductive biology predicts cave or cavity spawning with paternal brood care: after egg deposition on the interior walls of a sheltered site, the male fans and guards the clutch through incubation, removing infertile or fungused eggs.

The large adult body size of H. uruguayensis implies that spawning cavities in the wild would be correspondingly large — undercut clay banks and hollow root masses are typical Hypostomus spawning sites in large lowland South American rivers. Clutch size data are not available for this species.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus uruguayensis is not established as an aquarium fish; no registered keepers appear in the hobbyist literature. Its large maximum size (13.5 in TL) places it firmly in the category of species unsuitable for typical home aquaria — a tank of at least 130 US gal would be required for an adult, with strong filtration appropriate to a large, detritivorous fish producing significant organic waste.

The temperate origin of the species is relevant to husbandry: unlike most Hypostomus associated with Amazonian or Orinoco systems, H. uruguayensis comes from latitudes where winter temperatures in the wild can drop considerably. This may confer some tolerance of cooler water and might even make seasonal temperature variation beneficial for long-term health and any attempted reproduction. Specific water chemistry requirements are not documented, but the soft to moderately hard, circumneutral to slightly acidic conditions of the Uruguay River basin would be a reasonable starting point.

The species' documented feeding on Limnoperna fortunei in the wild is biologically interesting but of no practical relevance to aquarium keeping.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus uruguayensis as Least Concern in November 2020 (Salvador, G.N.; reviewer Reis, R.), published 2023. With an extent of occurrence of 461,383 mi² spanning four countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay), the species has one of the largest recorded ranges among southern South American Hypostomus. Population trend is listed as unknown, and no population assessments have been conducted.

No specific threats to H. uruguayensis are identified in the IUCN assessment, and no conservation actions or uses are documented. The La Plata basin as a whole faces significant anthropogenic pressure from agriculture, urbanisation, channelisation, and the pervasive impacts of the Limnoperna fortunei invasion, but none of these factors are considered to be driving a range-wide decline in this species at present. The broad distribution across multiple large drainages provides a degree of resilience against localised disturbance.
