Roeboides dientonito is a small, translucent, rhomboid-bodied characin from the Lake Maracaibo basin, Orinoco River system, and rivers of northwestern Guyana — one of the few lepidophagous fishes to have colonised these South American lowland waters. Like its relatives, it combines an unassuming, almost ghost-like appearance with a specialised habit of rasping scales from living fish, making it an unusual and behaviourally rich subject for the advanced aquarist. It is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Roeboides dientonito was described by Leonard Peter Schultz in 1944 on the basis of material from Venezuela. The valid name, as maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Roeboides dientonito Schultz, 1944. The species belongs to the genus Roeboides Günther, 1864, a characid lineage whose members are notable for facultative or obligate scale-eating (lepidophagy) and for the exserted, outward-facing teeth that give them a distinctive, almost comical expression.

R. dientonito is the sole representative of the R. guatemalensis species group outside Central America, a distributional pattern that suggests an ancient range disjunction between the Central American and South American radiations of the genus. The family Characidae, in its current broadly circumscribed sense, encompasses the majority of New World characins; Roeboides sits within the subfamily Characinae alongside other generalist to specialised predatory forms. Its South American range overlapping the Orinoco and Maracaibo systems places it among a diverse assemblage of lowland characin fauna.

Morphology

R. dientonito is a small fish, reaching a maximum of 2.5 in standard length. The body is rhomboid and strongly laterally compressed, giving the fish a deep, almost diamond-shaped profile when viewed from the side. The flanks are highly reflective and semi-translucent, with a silvery sheen that makes the internal organs dimly visible; this transparency is a recurring feature across the genus and may serve as a form of background-matching camouflage in open-water or near-surface habitats.

The most distinctive morphological feature of Roeboides is its dentition. Several teeth project outward or forward from the jaws and are visible even when the mouth is closed, a configuration associated with the genus' scale-rasping habits. The mouth is positioned to allow a quick sideways strike against a passing fish's flank. Fins are transparent to lightly pigmented. At under 3 in SL, dientonito is one of the smaller Roeboides, and sexual dimorphism is not strongly marked, though females are typically deeper-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

The species is known from three major drainages in northern South America: Lake Maracaibo and its tributary system in northwestern Venezuela, the Orinoco River basin, and rivers of northwestern Guyana. These are warm, lowland tropical freshwater systems spanning a range of habitat types from large river channels and floodplain lakes to smaller black- and white-water streams.

R. dientonito is classified as a benthopelagic species, occupying the mid-water and near-surface zones rather than the substrate. Water conditions across its range span the warm, slightly acidic to neutral conditions typical of lowland South American rivers: temperatures of roughly 72–82 °F and pH values from about 6.0 to 7.5. The species tolerates both clear whitewater and tannin-stained conditions, consistent with its broad distribution across geologically and chemically distinct river systems.

Feeding

Roeboides dientonito is a facultative lepidophage — a scale-eater — that combines this unusual dietary specialisation with more conventional invertebrate feeding, particularly during the juvenile phase. Young fish feed primarily on aquatic insect larvae and microcrustaceans, shifting toward a mixed diet that includes fish scales and invertebrates as they mature. The trophic level recorded for the species is 3.6 (±0.6 SE), reflecting a position as a secondary to tertiary consumer in its food web.

Scale-eating in Roeboides is accomplished by a rapid, glancing strike against the flank of a passing fish, shearing off one or several scales with the outward-projecting dentition. This is not exclusively destructive to prey — the target fish regrows its scales — but it is energetically profitable for the predator and can stress prey fish repeatedly harassed in captivity. In the aquarium the species will accept meaty prepared and frozen foods readily, and the scale-eating behaviour may be reduced but is rarely eliminated entirely.

Mating

Specific courtship observations for R. dientonito are not well documented in the primary literature. General information from the broader Roeboides genus indicates that spawning occurs year-round in tropical conditions, with a peak during the wet season when rising water levels, increased food availability, and fluctuating temperatures appear to trigger reproductive activity. This pattern is consistent with most lowland South American characins that breed seasonally in synchrony with flood pulses.

Like other characins in the family, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care. Males likely pursue females and spawning occurs in open water or among vegetation, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited and immediately abandoned. No nest-building, mouthbrooding, or guarding behaviour is known in the genus.

Breeding

No detailed captive-breeding accounts for Roeboides dientonito appear in the published hobby literature, and the species is rarely if ever available in the mainstream trade. Based on the genus' biology and the broader pattern for open-water characins, breeding would be approached by conditioning a group with live and frozen foods, simulating a wet-season trigger through a partial water change with slightly cooler, softer water, and providing fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as an egg substrate.

Eggs and any resulting fry would need to be separated promptly from the adults, as no parental care is expected and adults may consume eggs. First foods for fry would follow the standard characin approach: infusoria or commercial fry food initially, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp. Given the species' lepidophagous tendencies, juvenile fish may require careful management as they grow to avoid fin and scale damage among siblings or tankmates.

In the aquarium

Roeboides dientonito is an uncommon aquarium subject, occasionally encountered through specialist importers of South American oddities rather than the mainstream trade. Its primary appeal is behavioural — the scale-eating habit and the distinctive, exserted-toothed appearance attract aquarists with an interest in unusual characins. Tank requirements reflect its mid-water, open-water lifestyle: a well-filtered aquarium of at least 31.5 in in length with clear swimming space, moderate current, and a dark substrate that shows off the reflective flanks.

The principal husbandry challenge is the scale-rasping behaviour. R. dientonito should not be kept with small, fine-scaled, or slow-moving tankmates that it could persistently harass; robust, faster-moving species of similar or greater size are better companions. Water parameters should stay within the warm, soft-to-moderately-hard, near-neutral range: 72–82 °F and pH 6.0–7.5. The fish is not aggressive in the conventional sense and can be kept in small groups of its own kind. It accepts a varied diet of frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, brine shrimp, and small pellets, though the instinct to strike at passing fish for scales may persist regardless of how well-fed the fish is kept.

Conservation

Roeboides dientonito is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed in November 2020. The population trend is recorded as stable. The species' distribution across several large river systems — Lake Maracaibo, the Orinoco basin, and rivers of northwestern Guyana — provides a degree of redundancy that buffers it against localised threats. No major population-wide declines have been identified.

The broader ecosystems it inhabits face the usual suite of pressures common to South American lowland rivers: agricultural run-off, deforestation in catchment areas, artisanal and commercial fishing pressure, and in the Maracaibo basin specifically, the legacy of petroleum extraction. None of these pressures are thought to threaten R. dientonito at a species level given its current wide distribution and presumed abundance across suitable habitats.
