A slender, silver-bodied characin from the streams and brooks draining into Lake Maracaibo in northwestern Venezuela, Hemibrycon jabonero is one of roughly 51 valid species in a genus whose diversity peaks in the Andean foothills from Bolivia to Colombia. Though seldom encountered in the aquarium trade, it represents the kind of active, schooling mid-water fish typical of fast-flowing South American highland brooks — a benthopelagic species adapted to cool, well-oxygenated water with a slightly acidic to neutral chemistry.

Hemibrycon jabonero was described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1944 from material collected in the Lake Maracaibo basin of northwestern Venezuela. The genus Hemibrycon belongs to the large neotropical family Characidae and currently contains approximately 51 valid species, with the greatest diversity concentrated in the Andean drainages from Bolivia north to Colombia. The Lake Maracaibo basin represents one of the more isolated distribution centres for the genus, lying on the western margin of Venezuela.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid name Hemibrycon jabonero Schultz, 1944. Because the species was described in Hemibrycon and has remained there, the authority is written without parentheses. A review of Hemibrycon taxonomy published by MedCrave (JAMB-12-00377) confirms the species from the Lake Maracaibo drainage and situates it within the broader genus-level revision that has clarified species limits across the Andes and adjacent lowlands.

Morphology

Hemibrycon jabonero is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed characin reaching up to 4.5 in standard length, which is on the larger end for the genus. Like other Hemibrycon species it has the slender, torpedo-shaped profile associated with life in moving water — a body built for holding station in current rather than for the deep-bodied display postures seen in more lentic characins.

Colouration follows the typical Hemibrycon pattern: a bright silver lateral field, often with a faint horizontal stripe or series of scale-edge reflections along the flank, darkening toward the dorsum. Habitat

When kept, it should be treated as an active, schooling mid-water species that needs good water movement, high dissolved oxygen, and open swimming space. A group of six or more individuals will school cohesively and display the species' natural behaviour far more fully than isolated specimens.

Water conditions should reflect the species' native highland-brook origin: temperatures in the 72–79 °F range, pH 6.0–7.2, and moderate hardness (8–15 dH). Strong filtration with good surface agitation is advisable, as stream-adapted characins are sensitive to low oxygen and accumulating waste. Tankmates should be similarly sized, peaceful species from comparable water conditions. The species is not aggressive but may outcompete very small or slow-moving fish at feeding time.

Hemibrycon jabonero has not been formally assessed for the IUCN Red List as of the time of writing.
