Taxonomy & naming
Stiphodon ornatus was described by Kouichi Shibukawa and Masaki Aizawa in 2007, the species name reflecting the ornate, highly decorated coloration of adult males. The genus Stiphodon is placed by the Catalog of Fishes within the subfamily Sicydiinae, family Oxudercidae — the broad true-goby family that replaced the older, more familiar name Gobiidae in major revisions and now encompasses around 86 genera and roughly 600 species spread across marine, estuarine and freshwater habitats worldwide. Gobies are overwhelmingly a marine lineage; Stiphodon and the other sicydiine cling gobies are among the freshwater exceptions, though their amphidromous life cycle ties them inextricably to the sea.
The character that most clearly marks a true goby — in Stiphodon as in all members of Oxudercidae — is the fusion of the two pelvic fins into a single cup-like sucker disc on the underside of the body. This disc is used to cling to stones in fast current, and it immediately distinguishes the true gobies from the sleeper gobies and gudgeons (Eleotridae), whose pelvic fins remain separate. Stiphodon ornatus has no previously recognised synonymy under other genera; its combination with Stiphodon is original and currently valid.
Morphology
Stiphodon ornatus is a small, slender fish; the genus as a whole reaches no more than about 2.5 in standard length in its largest members, and S. ornatus is estimated to fall in the 1–2 in SL range typical for the group, placing it comfortably in nano-fish territory. The body is cylindrical and somewhat depressed anteriorly, suited to life in fast current close to the streambed, with the characteristic cling-goby silhouette of a broad, flat head and a tapering, muscular tail.
Sexual dichromatism is pronounced and among the most striking in the genus — a consistent Stiphodon trait. Males in full colour display vivid bands, washes or reticulations of iridescent blue, green and red or orange across the flank, with bright patterning on the dorsal and caudal fins; the specific epithet ornatus captures the extravagance of that display. Females are substantially plainer, typically brownish with a more cryptic pattern, an arrangement common across Sicydiinae where males compete visually for territories on exposed rockface.
Habitat
Stiphodon ornatus is endemic to Sumatra, specifically the western coast provinces of Aceh and West Sumatra in Indonesia. Its habitat is the swift, clear hill streams characteristic of all Stiphodon species: shallow, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water running over a substrate of clean stone and bedrock, typically in lower montane or foothill zones close to the coast. The water is transparent and relatively cool to warm depending on altitude, with negligible silt and high dissolved oxygen from the turbulent current.
Adult fish occupy the current-exposed rock surfaces where their pelvic sucker disc provides purchase and where the biofilm of diatoms, cyanobacteria and fine algae that is their food grows thickest. The streams lie close to the sea — a geographical constraint that the amphidromous life cycle demands, since the larvae must be swept from fresh water to a nearshore marine environment and the post-larvae must find their way back. Water chemistry in these habitats tends toward neutral to slightly alkaline pH over mineral substrates, and the salinity is fresh with possible brief estuarine influence at the lowest reaches.
Feeding
Stiphodon ornatus is an obligate algae grazer. It feeds by rasping biofilm — diatoms, cyanobacteria, fine filamentous algae and the associated microfauna — from the surface of exposed rock in fast current. The genus is extremely renowned for the voracity of its algae consumption, removing biofilm efficiently from rock faces in a way that makes a healthy adult conspicuous as it moves methodically across the substrate.
This feeding biology is the single most important thing to understand before acquiring the species. A tank that has not been running long enough to build a thick, diverse biofilm layer on its rockwork will not support Stiphodon ornatus, regardless of how clean the water is. The fish does not graze open sediment, does not eat flake or pellet food readily, and will starve in a bare or recently set up aquarium. A mature tank of several months' standing, with smooth river stones or slate that has accumulated a genuine algae crust and diatom film, is the minimum. Supplementary feeding with blanched spinach, spirulina-based foods, sinking algae wafers and occasional small frozen invertebrates can extend the diet, but the mature biofilm surface is non-negotiable.
Mating
Like all Stiphodon, S. ornatus is amphidromous, and the mating system reflects that life history. Adults live and breed in fresh water; males are highly territorial on their rock-face feeding and spawning patches, using their vivid coloration as a visual signal to both rivals and prospective mates. Male-male competition is intense and visual: fully coloured males display to each other by spreading their fins and intensifying the iridescent flank pattern, with overt chasing and physical contact between size-matched rivals.
Courtship involves the male guiding a ripe female to a sheltered site on or beneath a stone — a crevice, the underside of a flat rock, or a shallow cave in the streambed — where the adhesive eggs will be deposited. The male's sucker disc allows him to position himself on vertical or even inverted rock surfaces in fast flow, which is where nest sites are typically placed, presumably to reduce predation and sediment smothering.
Breeding
The breeding biology of Stiphodon ornatus follows the amphidromous pattern universal in the Sicydiinae: eggs are laid in fresh water, guarded by the male, and hatch into larvae that are immediately swept downstream to the sea. The male tends the adhesive egg clutch on the underside of a stone, fanning them with his fins, until hatching produces tiny, weakly swimming larvae. Those larvae enter the current and drift downstream to a nearshore marine or estuarine environment, where they develop through a planktonic stage as part of the marine community. After this marine phase — the duration of which is not precisely known for S. ornatus — the transparent, fully formed post-larvae (known as amphidromous post-larvae or glass gobies at this stage) appear at river mouths and ascend into fresh water. In many Stiphodon populations this upstream migration involves climbing wet rockfaces and waterfalls using the pelvic sucker disc.
The practical consequence for aquarists is unambiguous: Stiphodon ornatus cannot be bred in a home aquarium. The marine larval phase is not reproducible in captivity, and there is no record of successful closed-cycle captive breeding in this genus. All fish entering the trade are wild-collected, typically as post-larvae or juveniles from Sumatran streams.
In the aquarium
Stiphodon ornatus is an advanced-level fish that rewards patient, experienced keepers. The non-negotiable starting point is water quality and flow: the tank must replicate the fast, highly oxygenated clear-water stream environment. A powerful filter directing a strong current across a rock-covered substrate, very low nitrate, and excellent surface gas exchange are essential; the fish declines rapidly in stagnant, warm, or nutrient-loaded water. A temperature in the mid-to-upper twenties Celsius, neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and moderately hard water over a smooth stone substrate give the best results.
The tank must be genuinely mature — at minimum several months old — before introducing the fish, so that the rockwork has developed the thick, diverse biofilm that is S. ornatus's staple food. Cover the bottom and lower walls with smooth river stone, slate or ceramic tiles that have been allowed to green up in a running, well-lit system. Males are territorial and will fight over rock patches; provide enough space (ideally 23.5 in or more of tank length) and visual breaks between flat rock surfaces to distribute aggression. A tight-fitting lid is essential: like virtually all gobies, Stiphodon will find and use any gap to escape. Because all specimens are wild-caught, careful acclimatisation, quarantine, and attention to internal parasite loads are standard good practice.
Conservation
Stiphodon ornatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category at this time. Given the restricted endemic range — confined to the Aceh and West Sumatra provinces of Sumatra — and the small, geographically isolated streams it occupies, the species shares the vulnerability pattern common to narrow-range island stream endemics: any degradation of its limited watershed could threaten the entire known population.
The broader pressures on Sumatran freshwater habitats are severe and well documented: deforestation, agricultural runoff, sedimentation and the conversion of lowland and foothill watersheds continue to alter the clear, fast streams that Stiphodon requires. Because all fish offered in the aquarium trade are wild-collected — the amphidromous life cycle makes captive breeding impossible — trade demand adds a direct extraction pressure on wild populations. Responsible sourcing and restraint in collection volumes matter here more than for most aquarium fish; buyers should seek reputable importers who can speak to sustainable harvest practices in Sumatra.
