Roeboides myersii is a large, translucent characin of the upper Amazon and Orinoco drainages that has earned an unsettling reputation as a scale-eater — a lepidophage that nips scales and fin tissue from living fish rather than hunting prey in the conventional sense. Reaching up to 8.5 in in total length, it is one of the bigger members of the genus Roeboides and an arresting aquarium specimen: its compresseed, silvery body catches the light at every angle while the underslung jaw and alert, upward-tilted posture betray the predatory streak beneath the glassy exterior. Named for Philip Van Ness Myers, an American historian who collected the type specimen alongside the explorer James Orton in the upper Amazon basin, the species was described by Theodore Gill in 1870 from the Marañón or Napo river system of Peru or Ecuador.

Taxonomy & naming

Roeboides myersii was described by the American ichthyologist Theodore Gill in 1870, in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (vol. 22). The type locality recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the Río Marañón or Río Napo of the upper Amazon system in Peru or Ecuador, and the holotype is deposited at the National Museum of Natural History (USNM 21426). The original spelling appeared as Raeboides — now corrected to Roeboides — and the epithet has occasionally appeared as myersi rather than myersii; the valid form accepted by Eschmeyer is Roeboides myersii Gill, 1870.

The genus Roeboides is placed within the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes in the Neotropics. Roeboides is part of the subfamily Characinae and is notable for the prevalence of lepidophagy — scale-eating — as a feeding strategy across multiple species in the group. The genus ranges broadly through South American river systems, and R. myersii is among the larger and more widely distributed members, recorded from the Amazon, Orinoco, and Parnaíba basins.

Morphology

Roeboides myersii reaches a maximum recorded total length of 8.5 in, making it a substantially built characin by any measure. The body is deep and strongly laterally compressed, giving a blade-like profile when viewed head-on. The flanks are covered in large, reflective scales that produce the silvery, semi-translucent appearance characteristic of the genus; in life and under aquarium lighting, the body takes on a glassy, almost metallic sheen.

The head is notable for a projecting lower jaw that angles upward, giving the fish a slightly upturned, aggressive expression. The teeth are visible and pronounced, consistent with the scale-eating habit: sharp, curved, and well positioned for hooking the edges of another fish's scales. The dorsal profile curves smoothly behind the head, and the body tapers to a forked tail. As in other Roeboides, the lateral line curves steeply downward toward the belly, a distinctive meristic feature of the genus. Males are generally slimmer-bodied than females, which become noticeably deeper and more rounded when gravid.

Habitat

Roeboides myersii occupies the Amazon, Orinoco, and Parnaíba river basins across a broad swathe of South America. FishBase records it as a freshwater, benthopelagic species of tropical habit, meaning it moves through the middle and lower water column of river channels and associated floodplain habitats rather than being strictly benthic or pelagic. The Amazon and Orinoco drainages encompass a wide range of habitat types — blackwater and clearwater tributaries, white-water main channels, flooded forest, and large river margins — and Roeboides species are typically associated with open or lightly structured water rather than dense vegetation.

Water parameters across its range vary considerably by drainage and season: the white-water Amazon main stem is warm, turbid, and moderately mineralised, while blackwater tributaries are soft and acidic. No specific temperature or pH data for R. myersii field sites have been published in accessible sources; a related congener, R. descalvadensis, has been recorded at 72–81 °F, which is likely broadly representative of the genus in the tropics.

Feeding

Roeboides myersii is carnivorous, with a trophic level of 4.2 recorded on FishBase — higher than most generalist predators and consistent with a diet that derives significant energy from animal tissue. The genus is well documented as lepidophagous: individuals approach host fish from below and behind, using the projecting lower jaw to scrape or nip scales from the body surface, occasionally also taking fin tissue. Scale-eating is not the only feeding mode; Roeboides will also take small invertebrates and fish fry, but the lepidophage habit is the defining ecological trait of the group.

In the aquarium, R. myersii presents obvious challenges as a community fish because of this habit. It will damage tankmates by stripping their scales, and damage accumulates over time even if individual attacks seem minor. Prospective keepers should plan for species-only housing or carefully consider tankmates that are too large or too armoured to be efficiently attacked. Meaty foods — whole or chunked frozen fish, large bloodworm, prawn — are accepted in captivity; some specimens also take large pellets.

Mating

Detailed field observations of Roeboides myersii reproductive behaviour have not been published in accessible literature. Based on the biology of closely related characins in the subfamily Characinae, the species is presumed to be an open-water, egg-scattering spawner. Courtship likely involves the male pursuing the female, with spawning occurring in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation where adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are released and fertilised without any further parental investment.

Sexual dimorphism is modest: females of egg-carrying species typically become visibly deeper-bodied when gravid, and the slimmer profile of males provides the most reliable external distinguishing feature outside of breeding condition. No courtship display or pairing behaviour specific to R. myersii has been described in the available literature.

Breeding

No confirmed captive breeding of Roeboides myersii has been documented in the accessible hobbyist or scientific literature. The species is rarely kept or bred by aquarists, and detailed accounts of aquarium spawning are absent from available sources. Based on the general biology of South American characins in the Characinae, breeding in the wild likely follows the egg-scattering mode: adhesive eggs deposited among vegetation or in open water, with no parental care and substantial egg and fry predation, including potentially from the parents themselves.

Any attempt to breed R. myersii in captivity would require conditioning adults on high-protein live or frozen foods, separating the pair or group from other fishes to prevent injury, and providing fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as a substrate for egg deposition. Incubation time and fry requirements are undocumented; data from related species suggest hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures, with small free-swimming fry requiring very fine first foods.

In the aquarium

Roeboides myersii is an uncommon but genuinely interesting aquarium fish for the specialist keeper. At up to 8.5 in it needs a large tank — a minimum of 59 in in length is appropriate for an adult — with clean, well-oxygenated water and efficient filtration. It is an active, open-water swimmer that does best with ample swimming space rather than dense planting, though some cover along the margins helps reduce stress.

The scale-eating habit makes community keeping difficult or impossible with most standard aquarium fish; any tankmate small enough to be bullied will accumulate scale damage. Species-only housing is the safest approach, either as a lone specimen or as a group of similarly sized conspecifics where the aggression is distributed. Larger, thicker-scaled or armoured fish — big cichlids, large catfishes — may be viable companions if the tank is sufficiently large, but vigilance is required. Water quality should be maintained at a high standard; as a large, active carnivore the species has a significant waste output. It is not commonly available in the hobby trade and commands specialist-level husbandry; commercial fisheries in its native range harvest it, suggesting it is not particularly rare in the wild.

Conservation
