Roeboides oligistos is a slender characid of the Amazon basin and its northern Brazilian tributaries — a scale-eater that makes its living by ambushing larger fishes and nipping scales from their flanks, a feeding strategy rare among freshwater fish worldwide. Described by Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena in 2000 during a revision of the Roeboides affinis species complex, it occupies the slow-moving backwaters, floodplain lakes, and marginal streams of the Amazon, Negro, Branco, Tapajós, and Trombetas river systems, where it reaches about 3 in in standard length. The IUCN assesses it as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Roeboides oligistos was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena in 2000, in a taxonomic revision of the Roeboides affinis complex published in Iheringia, Série Zoologia. That revision recognised seven species within the complex, of which R. oligistos is one. The valid name as listed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Roeboides oligistos Lucena, 2000.

The genus Roeboides belongs to the family Characidae and is placed within the subfamily Characinae — a grouping that also contains other lepidophagous (scale-eating) genera such as Charax and Roeboexodon. Roeboides is distributed broadly across South America east of the Andes, from the Orinoco south through the Amazon basin and into the La Plata drainage. The genus is best known among ichthyologists for its habit of scale-eating, an unusual trophic strategy shared by only a handful of freshwater fish lineages globally.

The specific epithet oligistos comes from the Greek for 'very few' or 'fewest', though the precise sense Lucena intended in applying it to this species is not recorded in the available sources.

Morphology

Roeboides oligistos reaches a maximum recorded standard length of about 3 in, typical for the genus. It shares the family plan common to Roeboides: a laterally compressed, somewhat deep body with a strongly arched dorsal profile, a relatively large head, and an upturned, oblique mouth set with the enlarged, outward-projecting teeth characteristic of lepidophagous characins. Those teeth — visible as small fang-like projections outside the closed mouth in adults — are adaptations for catching and scraping scales from the flanks of prey fish.

The colouration is relatively plain, as befits an ambush predator that must approach other fishes closely: the body is silvery, sometimes with a faint lateral stripe or iridescent sheen depending on angle and lighting. There is no dramatic sexual dichromatism reported in the literature; external sex differences within the species are not well characterised in the sources available.

Habitat

Roeboides oligistos is recorded from the Amazon, Negro, Branco, Tapajós, and Trombetas river basins in Brazil. These span a broad arc of the central and northern Amazon drainage, from the main stem to major blackwater and clearwater tributaries. The species is classified as freshwater and benthopelagic, indicating it occupies the lower to mid water column rather than being strictly surface- or bottom-associated.

Congeners and close relatives in the genus favour lowland environments with reduced current: slow-moving side channels, river backwaters, floodplain pools, and vegetated marginal areas. Water conditions associated with similar Roeboides habitats are soft to slightly soft, with temperatures in the range of 72–77 °F and pH from roughly 6.0 to 7.5. The Amazonian floodplain systems this species inhabits are highly seasonal — water levels, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity shift dramatically between wet and dry seasons, and the fish likely tracks favourable microhabitats through the annual flood cycle.

Feeding

Roeboides oligistos, like other members of the genus, is a lepidophage — a scale-eater. The Roeboides feeding mode involves approaching a larger host fish, typically from behind or to the side, and using the projecting outer teeth to dislodge and ingest scales from its flanks. This interaction is rapid and does not necessarily kill the host; the host fish's scales regenerate over time, making scale-eating a renewable resource exploited repeatedly from the same population of prey.

FishBase records a trophic level of approximately 3.6 for the species, consistent with a broadly omnivorous or carnivorous diet. In practice, Roeboides are opportunistic and may supplement scale-eating with small invertebrates, insect larvae, and other items when available. The scale-eating habit makes them unusual tankmates in captivity; they will target the scales of slow-moving or long-finned fishes placed in the same aquarium.

Mating

No specific mating observations have been published for Roeboides oligistos. Based on what is known of the genus and the broader Characidae, spawning is expected to follow the egg-scattering, open-water or plant-associated pattern typical of characins: males pursue females, with fertilisation occurring in the water column and adhesive eggs settling among fine-leaved vegetation or substrate. No courtship displays specific to the species are on record.

Spawning in congeners is associated with the onset of the wet season in their Amazonian habitats, when rising water levels, falling temperatures, and increased food availability appear to cue reproductive activity. Seasonal peaks during the flood pulse are consistent with what is reported for Roeboides affinis, the best-studied member of the complex.

Breeding

Roeboides oligistos has not been bred in captivity to any documented extent in the available literature, and no detailed breeding protocol exists for the species. General Roeboides breeding would be expected to resemble other small characins: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or substrate, with small adhesive eggs and no parental care. Adults are likely to consume eggs and small fry if given the opportunity.

Data on clutch size, incubation period, and fry development in R. oligistos are not available. Any aquarist attempting to breed the species would need to condition adults separately on high-quality live and frozen foods, provide dense fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops, and transfer eggs or spawning medium to a separate rearing container promptly after spawning.

In the aquarium

Roeboides oligistos is rarely encountered in the ornamental fish trade and is primarily of interest to specialists in unusual or predatory characins. Its principal challenge in an aquarium setting is its lepidophagous habit: even in a community aquarium with seemingly appropriate tankmates, it will nip scales from other fishes, causing stress and injury over time. Suitable companions are limited to other robust, fast-moving fish of similar size, or the species is best kept as a species-only group.

Water conditions should reflect the soft, slightly acidic to neutral Amazonian environment: temperature 72–77 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, low to moderate hardness, with good filtration and regular water changes. In captivity the species will accept meaty frozen and live foods — bloodworm, chopped earthworm, brine shrimp — and may eventually accept pellets, though transition takes patience. A tank with some cover (floating plants, driftwood) gives the fish retreat space and reduces aggression. Given the rarity of the species in trade and its specialised diet, it is not a beginner's fish.

Conservation

Roeboides oligistos is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated November 2018. This reflects the species' relatively wide distribution across multiple large river basins in Brazil — the Amazon, Negro, Branco, Tapajós, and Trombetas — without evidence of a rapid population decline or acute habitat threat sufficient to qualify for a threatened category.

The Amazon basin, while globally important and under increasing anthropogenic pressure from deforestation, agriculture, dam construction, and fishing, still supports vast areas of functionally intact lowland floodplain habitat. Species with broad distributions across this system, such as R. oligistos, are generally buffered against localised threats. No specific conservation actions are noted for the species, and it is not recorded in targeted trade collection. Maintaining the integrity of Amazon floodplain habitats remains the primary conservation need for the suite of species, including this one, that depend on the seasonal flood pulse.
